Gascoigne kitchens

What the kitchens here are actually like

1960s tower block1960s low-rise flat2010s-2020s regeneration housing

There is nearly always a boxed soil stack or a service riser in a corner of the run, and it is rarely mentioned at enquiry. What decides between a slim upstand and full-height stone is nearly always the wall rather than the taste. Siliconed to the top, never grouted.

A large regeneration area where older system-built blocks are being replaced by new flats and maisonettes, so the work splits between compact original flat kitchens getting a hard-wearing replacement top and newer units where owners upgrade the developer's finish. Kitchens are small and linear, one wall, sometimes with a short return, and no island anywhere.

Fire doors and 90-degree landings are the real limit on flat jobs here, so lengths are cut to what will physically turn on the landing.

A tower block runs one or two lifts for many floors, so a lift out of service postpones a job rather than making it harder. The rear kitchen wall in ex-council flats and maisonettes is commonly dense in-situ concrete or blockwork with a thin skim, which means mechanical fixings are hard work and the splashback is held on adhesive rather than screwed. The wall makes that decision, not the brochure.

The mix here is 1960s tower block, 1960s low-rise flat and 2010s-2020s regeneration housing. A quote that ignores which one you have is guessing.

True everywhere

Splashbacks and upstands, in short

  • Cut from the same slab run as the worktop, at the same time.
  • Ordered later, from a different batch, the match is not reliable where the pieces meet.
  • Socket and switch positions must be final before templating.
  • The joint to the worktop is siliconed, never grouted.

Covered on our east London run. Fitted 3–7 working days from template.

The building, and what it does to the job

Chased-in conduit and surface-mounted trunking running across the wall at worktop height, which sets an immovable minimum for where the upstand can sit flat.

What gets asked for here

It is on the shortlist for this patch rather than at the top of it, because worktop replacement comes up more often. Nothing about the process differs between the two.

Getting stone into the room

Flats above ground level throughout, so it is lifts, communal stairs, narrow landings and fire doors, with delivery times often restricted by the managing agent.

Stone goes up on edge, and it is the half-landing turn rather than the flight itself that sets the maximum piece. Where the route is tight we break a long splashback at a natural vertical joint instead of forcing one panel through. It decides panel size before anything is cut.

Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Questions

Worktop splashbacks & upstands in Gascoigne

If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.

Do you cover Gascoigne?

Yes. Gascoigne is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are IG11. It is worked on our east London run, along with the rest of Barking and Dagenham. A dedicated loading bay or service yard is the easiest arrangement in a managed building, provided the slot is booked and someone has the key to the shutter. Splashbacks are normally the last thing off, so a short parking window is exactly when they get rushed. Handling is where these pieces get damaged. We template in your kitchen and fit in your kitchen, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.

Does the housing in Gascoigne change how worktop splashbacks & upstands works?

A tower block runs one or two lifts for many floors, so a lift out of service postpones a job rather than making it harder. The rear kitchen wall in ex-council flats and maisonettes is commonly dense in-situ concrete or blockwork with a thin skim, which means mechanical fixings are hard work and the splashback is held on adhesive rather than screwed. Cut from the same slab run as the tops. Fire doors and 90-degree landings are the real limit on flat jobs here, so lengths are cut to what will physically turn on the landing.

How does the stone actually reach a kitchen in Gascoigne?

Flats above ground level throughout, so it is lifts, communal stairs, narrow landings and fire doors, with delivery times often restricted by the managing agent. Stone goes up on edge, and it is the half-landing turn rather than the flight itself that sets the maximum piece. Where the route is tight we break a long splashback at a natural vertical joint instead of forcing one panel through. It decides panel size before anything is cut.

Do you do much worktop splashbacks & upstands around Gascoigne?

It is one of the three we do most here, behind worktop replacement. Same template visit, same workshop, same installers either way. Upgrading a builder-finish kitchen is mostly a swap, so the cost sits in the material choice rather than in the shape of the room. Splashbacks and upstands are cut from the same slab run at the same time, which is the only way the batch actually matches. Siliconed to the worktop, never grouted. Handover-spec kitchens are square, plumb and predictable, which means the join count is honest and driven by run length rather than by the building. Ordered later from a different batch, the match is not reliable exactly where the pieces meet. Sockets final before template.

Why do two Gascoigne kitchens the same size price differently?

Where the return runs into a wall that is out of square, the corner is templated as the angle it really is rather than as ninety degrees. Upstands follow the run exactly, so every internal and external corner is a separate mitred or butted piece. Corners get their own pieces. Material is £110-£550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.

What has to be finished before you can template?

Boxing is rarely the same depth at worktop height as it is at floor level, so measuring it low down is the usual reason a top will not sit back. Where the wall cannot be made good, setting the stone deliberately proud on a subframe with a shadow gap reads as a detail rather than a bad fit. Scribed, dubbed out, or set proud. Pick one. Any surface trunking or conduit has to be rerouted or accepted and boxed before templating, because the stone cannot be scribed around a live conduit on site. Mixed ownership means the decision-maker is not always the person who lets us in, so it is worth being clear early about who signs the quote off. Splashbacks are cut from the same slab run as the tops, so they have to be decided before fabrication, not after. Decided before fabrication, not after.
