Goodmayes kitchens

What the kitchens here are actually like

Edwardian terrace1930s semipost-war infill

A hundred and forty years of alterations sit under the current kitchen, and the worktop is what has to sit flat on top of all of it. Pieces are cut, mitred, machined and dry-assembled on the bench before anything is loaded onto a van. Joins over gables, always.

A lot of family houses running knock-through kitchen-diners where the old scullery wall has come out and the kitchen now wraps around two or three walls with a large sink run under the rear window.

Rear extensions usually leave a usable side alley of around a metre. Mixed: terraces on the south side with kerbside-only unloading, and 1930s roads to the north where most houses have a crossover and a hardstanding to park on. Range cookers dominate here and the cut-outs sit close to end walls, so we check the actual cooker width on site instead of working off the plan measurement. Big appliances are the norm, so we see wide American fridge gaps, range cookers up to 110cm and worktops cut with generous clearance either side of the hob.

A bay-fronted terrace has a long hall running past the stairs to the kitchen, so the hall turn caps the piece length before the run length does. The galley run down a side-return usually measures longer than a slab will give us, so a join is designed in from the start and nested to land over a cabinet gable rather than wherever the material happens to run out. Every join over a gable, clear of every cut-out.

The mix here is Edwardian terrace, 1930s semi and post-war infill. They are not interchangeable, and a worktop finds the differences quickly.

True everywhere

Worktop fabrication, in short

  • Slabs come in finite sizes, so a long run needs a join.
  • Joins sit over a cabinet gable, never spanning a gap or running through a cut-out.
  • A finished join is typically 2–3mm, colour-matched and sanded flush.
  • Your sink and hob are dry-fitted on the bench before dispatch.

Covered on our east London run. Fitted 3–7 working days from template.

The shape of the run

A U shape uses more linear metres than people expect, and the two returns rarely nest together, so a second slab is a genuine possibility. The nest is laid out around that, with joins placed over cabinet gables and kept clear of every cut-out. Every join sits over a gable.

What gets asked for here

The research on this patch does not put this among the three commonest jobs. Worktop replacement, worktop installation and worktop templating do. That changes how often we are here, not how the work is done.

Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Questions

Worktop fabrication in Goodmayes

If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.

Do you cover Goodmayes?

Yes. Goodmayes is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are IG3. It is worked on our east London run, along with the rest of Redbridge. Gravel and block paving both look like hard standing and neither takes a loaded trolley, so the run from tail lift to door gets boarded. Pieces are loaded in reverse fitting order so the first thing off the van is the first thing that goes down. The load plan follows from it. We template in your kitchen and fit in your kitchen, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.

Does the housing in Goodmayes change how worktop fabrication works?

A bay-fronted terrace has a long hall running past the stairs to the kitchen, so the hall turn caps the piece length before the run length does. The galley run down a side-return usually measures longer than a slab will give us, so a join is designed in from the start and nested to land over a cabinet gable rather than wherever the material happens to run out. Every join over a gable, clear of every cut-out. Range cookers dominate here and the cut-outs sit close to end walls, so we check the actual cooker width on site instead of working off the plan measurement.

How does the stone actually reach a kitchen in Goodmayes?

Mixed: terraces on the south side with kerbside-only unloading, and 1930s roads to the north where most houses have a crossover and a hardstanding to park on. Rear extensions usually leave a usable side alley of around a metre. Garden routes carry their own hazards: a drain cover, a step up to a patio, wet decking, or a lawn that will not take a loaded trolley. The maximum piece length is fixed at drawing stage and every join is placed over a cabinet gable from there. The drawing carries that decision through to the saw.

Do you get much worktop fabrication work in Goodmayes?

Not particularly, and it would be easy to pretend otherwise. What the research on this patch actually lists is worktop replacement, worktop installation and worktop templating. That is a statement about the local housing rather than about the work. It is quoted, cut and fitted exactly the same way here as anywhere else on the patch. A new extension slab is not automatically level, and that wants checking before templating rather than after the stone is cut. So the nesting is planned around it rather than around a standard kitchen. Nested for the job in front of us. The junction between the original room and the extension is the point to watch, because the two floors rarely sit at the same height. Pieces are dry-assembled and checked on the bench before anything is loaded. Same slab run, or it is not a match.

Why do two Goodmayes kitchens the same size price differently?

With three walls in play the chance of one of them being out of square is high, and the template has to carry all three angles. The nest is laid out around that, with joins placed over cabinet gables and kept clear of every cut-out. That is nested before any glass goes on the saw. Material is £110-£550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.

What has to be finished before you can template?

A low sill over the sink run is what decides between an upstand and stone dying into a window board, and there is often less clearance than an upstand is tall. Cut it square where it should be radiused and the piece will fail on the lift, not in the kitchen. Machined to the real line. The sink and hob need to be on site and the run layout fixed before we start cutting, because moving a hob after the join position is set means recutting the whole piece. The householder is normally on site at template, and that is the right time to settle sink position, tap centres and overhang rather than agree them by email. Sink and hob are dry-fitted on the bench before dispatch, whoever supplied them. The approved drawing is the instruction.
