On a replacement the old top comes off in the morning and the new stone is down and sealed the same day. Tiling bonded to the wall behind usually comes away with the old top, so that wall is agreed beforehand. The units stay where they are and only the surface changes. On a street with no restrictions the constraint is other residents rather than a warden, so it is worth putting a cone or a car out early. The upper counter is the longest piece on the van, so the tail lift needs the full swing radius clear on the pavement. The van stays put while the carcass is being scribed to.

A remake goes back through the same cutting and polishing, so it is a return visit rather than a patch. Every piece is dry-assembled on the bench before it is loaded, so a fabrication mistake is found in the workshop rather than in your kitchen. A remade piece is cut from the same slab run wherever the slab allows, because a replacement from another batch will not match across a join. A front path with a gate and a turn or two adds handling before the door is even reached, and every handling movement is another chance to catch a corner. A lobby is one of the few places a piece can be staged, so the counter comes in early and stands on trestles until the carcass is ready for it. The counter is the last thing in and the first thing looked at.
