Corner sinks and corner hobs sit exactly where the joint wants to be, so on an L the cut-out positions get settled before the join positions do. An external corner on a counter is seen from both sides at once, so it is mitred rather than butted and the pattern is carried round it. The knee recess removes the leg the span was relying on.

Topping a seal up is a wipe-on job with a cloth. Day to day all three want soap and water; abrasive creams and scouring pads are what dull a polished surface. Sealing is the one maintenance job that genuinely differs by material, and it is worth knowing which you are buying before the slab is chosen. The classic arrangement is the original back room with a later extension bolted onto it, so the kitchen is two ages of building in one room. The carcass is built around a chimney breast or into a bay, so the counter is drawn to a shape the joiner had to invent rather than to a rectangle, and the return between the upper counter and the transaction shelf rarely nests neatly against the long piece.
