Reception counters and desks in Lower Sydenham

Unrestricted does not mean empty, and a street that is clear at seven is usually full by nine. Stone does not flex, so a run that rocks on its carcasses rocks just as badly once it is stone. Units have to be fitted, fixed and level before templating, and it is better to hear that at the template than on the fitting day. A sloping floor is not the problem. The plane the unit tops finish in is. Level has to hold across the whole room rather than along one wall, or a floor that falls end to end shows as a step where two pieces meet. Where the floor falls away across a lobby the carcass is packed level first, because the top cannot correct anything sitting under it. The carcass is levelled before the top is ever offered up.

Granite is porous to varying degrees, so it is sealed when we fit it and topped up over the life of the worktop. Quartz carries resin, so a hot pan wants a trivet, while granite and sintered stone will take one without complaint. Granite tells you when the seal wants topping up: water stops beading on the surface and starts darkening it instead. Ceilings sit at about two point three metres and the head of the window is close under them, so a unit over the window has very little wall to hold onto. These are the counters where the lower transaction shelf earns its keep, because the people served at it are the people the standard was written for, so the knee space and the clear approach to it are checked on site rather than taken off a drawing. The knee recess is argued over hardest where the floor is shallowest.

The tap hole is drilled in the workshop too, and its position depends on how far the tap has to swing. A piece with a bowl and a hob cut into it is the fragile one, and it is handled accordingly. Where the hob lands is set out against the units and the wall behind, not off the kitchen plan. Where the sink and the hob face each other across the aisle, everything carried between them crosses the walkway, and that is the one movement the shape cannot design out. The return between the high counter and the low shelf never nests neatly, and it is what decides how much slab the desk swallows. Overhang at the public face is agreed before the carcass is built.

Upstands and splashbacks are templated after the worktop is down and settled, so they are a separate visit. The design and quotation visit comes first. It is free and carries no obligation. The same firm templates and fits. Nobody else is brought in to install. The balcony door frequently opens off the kitchen, which puts a threshold, a draught and a well-used route through one end of the run. A reception counter answers to the building it stands in more than to the drawing, because it is fabricated to a carcass somebody else has already built and fixed. The knee recess is a dimension, not a styling note.
