Worktop templating in Mile End

Yes. Mile End is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are E1, E3. It is worked on our east London run, along with the rest of Tower Hamlets. Loading exemptions on red routes are narrow, time-limited and heavily camera-enforced, so we plan around them rather than relying on them. A templater circling for a space arrives late into a slot that was already tight, and the drawing is what suffers. It goes on the job sheet for the fitting crew. Cornice, picture rails and deep skirting survive in converted rooms, so the run stands off the wall and the back edge follows the units rather than the plaster. The template plots the bow along the back of the run, which is why a tape reading taken beforehand never matches. Two to three hours, once the units are in. Stair turns in converted terraces are the limiter, and anything over about 2.4m in one piece will not make the first-floor landing.

The main road through is a red route with no stopping at any time on long stretches, so everything comes in off the side streets, which are permit bays with tight parallel gaps. Converted flats mean carrying stone up a shared Victorian stair with a half-landing turn and a narrow original doorway at the top. Communal stairs get boarded and the handrail padded, and we walk the route with a tape before the first piece leaves the van. The templater measures that route on the same visit, so the drawing leaves site already knowing the maximum piece. It goes on the drawing with the run dimensions.

Galley runs are usually short enough to come out of a single slab, so the material band you choose does more to the total than the room shape does. Walls that bow along their length are the normal condition rather than the exception, and a straight-cut back edge will show a shadow gap at one end and touch at the other. Units fixed and packed level over the sloping floor, walls replastered and dry at their final thickness (tiling and splashbacks go on after the worktop, never before), and the sink, tap and hob physically on site, with a Belfast sink built in and set at its finished height. A street with houses in single occupation next to the same houses cut into flats produces two completely different jobs from the same elevation. The template happens when the units are in, fixed and level, whoever is fitting them. No stone is cut from a plan.
