With no scheme to work with there is nothing to book and nobody to ring, so the only levers left are an early arrival and a word with the neighbours. Granite is porous to varying degrees, so it is sealed when we fit it and topped up over the life of the worktop. Topping a seal up is a wipe-on job with a cloth. Upkeep is settled when the slab is chosen, since it belongs to the material rather than the fabrication. The floor is often flags or brick laid straight on the ground, so it is solid, uneven and not going to be levelled by chasing into it. A private clinic in a converted house wants a counter reading as furniture rather than as a shop fitting, which puts the edge profile and the returns under scrutiny. A desk seen from a whole floor is finished on every edge.

The sink and hob are lifted out with the old top and kept aside if you are reusing them. On a replacement the old top comes off in the morning and the new stone is down and sealed the same day. Old tops are screwed or glued from underneath, so the drawer boxes come out before the worktop does.
