Stone bar tops in North Harrow

A bar top takes weight on its front edge all evening, so the overhang and what carries it matter more than the slab does.

Customers looking at stone bar top work in North Harrow usually want to know two things first: what it will cost and what has to come out to make room for it. Textbook Metroland semis, kitchen at the rear beside a dining room, with the standard improvement being to knock through and add a small rear extension for a kitchen-diner of roughly 3.6m of run plus a 1.8m island or breakfast bar. A high proportion still have their original small kitchen and want a straight replacement. Nothing above needs settling before you get in touch. It gets settled with a tape measure, in your kitchen, in North Harrow.

The old larder leaves behind a thick cold shelf and a vent brick through the outer wall, and both have to go before that wall reads flat. Height is the other half of it, since a bar sits above the working plane and the knee room beneath is measured from the face of the frame, not from the edge of the stone. Everything under the nose is agreed before a slab is chosen.

The chimney breast in the corner has usually been left in place, so the run gains a return and two scribed ends. These bars nearly always land at the open end of a knocked-through kitchen and dining room, which means the piece is read from both sides and both sides get the same edge treatment rather than one being left as a cut face. A trade bar and a home bar are different pieces of work.

The kitchens we see here sit in 1930s Metroland semi, 1930s bay-fronted terrace and 1960s maisonette. Each of those puts the services somewhere else, and the cut-outs follow.

True everywhere

Stone bar tops, in short

  • Anything past about 300mm of unsupported overhang gets steel or a corbel underneath.
  • The front edge is the one people touch, so it is profiled and polished on all exposed faces.
  • Quartz is the usual choice indoors; porcelain and sintered stone where drinks and citrus are constant.
  • A bar top is fitted level to itself, not to the floor, because floors in older buildings rarely are.

The place

Why North Harrow is its own job

The work we do in North Harrow has taught us which details to write down at the survey and which to allow extra for. Wide roads with grass verges, dropped kerbs and driveways on most houses, and side gates typically wide enough to take a slab down the side to a rear extension without going through the house. Straightforward stock, so the constraint is usually the retained 1930s window cill height dictating whether a 20mm or 30mm top fits under it. We would rather tell you about that before you pay a deposit than explain it afterwards.

The work

What bar tops involves

What is covered is the template, the machining, the support fixed into the frame and the fitting, with the frame itself either built by us as joinery or by whoever is already on site. The top is machined at the works with the front edge, the ends and the underside all profiled and polished, since every one of those faces is at eye level from a stool. You end up with a surface chosen for what gets put down on it, so a wet glass standing all evening and a slice of lemon are not the things that spoil it.

The job starts underneath. What the front edge is carried on gets settled before the slab, the colour or the profile is discussed at all. Corbels are set out to the stool positions so that nobody has one arriving between their knees, and they are fixed to structure rather than to a lining board. A side passage usually lets a full length reach the room, so the piece is sized by the slab and by what the frame will carry rather than by the door. The projection is engineered, not hoped for.

The money

What it costs in North Harrow

A bar top is priced from what holds it up as much as from the stone, because the steel, the corbels and the time spent fixing them are real lines rather than an allowance. Two facing runs mean two sets of edges and two scribes in a small span, which is why a compact galley rarely prices as cheaply as its area suggests. Material runs from £110 to £550 per square metre supply only, and the template, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines. Edge work is counted by the face, and a bar has more of them.

1930s and inter-war semis

What North Harrow asks for

This is commercial work rather than something the housing here generates. Domestically these streets ask for worktop installation, worktop replacement and worktop templating. It runs through the same template, the same bench and the same fitters.

1930s and inter-war semis

The carry, and what it rules out

The side passage is the measurement that matters, because a piece has to be carried flat down it and then turned in at the back door, and the turn is always tighter than the passage. A top with a bonded apron on the front arrives deeper than a worktop and behaves like a beam, so there is no easing it round a turn at all. Where the way in is awkward the bar is drawn in tiers.

1930s and inter-war semis

North Harrow in the housing figures

On these streets a large share of the housing went up between the wars. Where the frame is site-built rather than a kitchen carcass, its plumb and its fixings are checked before the top is measured. The knee space is drawn before the bracket is.

Getting stone into a North Harrow kitchen

Wide roads with grass verges, dropped kerbs and driveways on most houses, and side gates typically wide enough to take a slab down the side to a rear extension without going through the house.

Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Questions

Questions we get asked in North Harrow

If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.

Is North Harrow on your patch?

Yes. North Harrow is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are HA2. It is worked on our north west London run, along with the rest of Harrow. A step up from the drive to the threshold turns the last two metres into a lift, and a lift is where two pairs of hands become the minimum. A bar fit runs longer than a worktop run, because the frame, the support and the stone are three stages and only the last of them is quick. A bar top left on a pavement is a bar top with a chipped nose. Everything that involves you happens in your kitchen, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.

Is there anything about North Harrow buildings that catches bar tops out?

These kitchens have been retiled at least twice, and stripping the tiles takes the bottom band of plaster with them because the old laminate ran underneath rather than up to them. The side passage is usually wide enough for a full length to reach the room, so piece length is decided by the slab and by what the frame will carry rather than by the front door. Where the walls give nothing, the bar stands on its own. Window boards and cills stand proud of the plaster, so the back edge of the top has to be plotted to where the units actually sit rather than to the wall. On a bar that counts twice over, because the same obstruction has to be cleared by the stone above it and by the knees of whoever is sitting at it. A column in the middle of a bar is a decision, not a surprise.

What do you check about the route into a North Harrow property?

Rear access usually lets us fit longer pieces whole, so the join count ends up decided by the slab rather than by the building. That matters more on a bar than on a run, because a join forced by the way in cannot be allowed to land in the unsupported part of the nose. The frame goes up first so the top has somewhere to land. Where the van cannot turn on the plot it has to arrive already facing the right way, so the approach along the street is part of the plan. That has to cover more than the unload, since the corbels, the flat bar and the fixings all come off the van well before the top does. What comes off the van first is whatever holds the top up.

Does North Harrow actually ask for bar tops?

Not to any real extent, and it would be easy to imply it was. What the research on this patch actually lists is worktop installation, worktop replacement and worktop templating. It describes the kitchens on this patch, not the work that goes into them. Same quoting, same cutting, same fitting as anywhere else on the patch. The junction between the original room and the extension is the point to watch, because the two floors rarely sit at the same height. A bar is nearly always the last thing added to a project, so it is templated on a visit of its own once the joinery around it has stopped moving. What gets leaned on gets specified for leaning. Extension kitchens are usually specified long before they are buildable, so the run lengths on the drawing and the run lengths in the room are different numbers. Where the same detail is repeating across several rooms the support gets standardised once and then cut to length, which is cheaper than drawing it each time. Batch work still gets its own template per room.

Why do two North Harrow kitchens the same size price differently?

Where the aisle is too tight the usual answer is a reduced-depth top on one side, and a 500mm run is a different cut, a different sink and a different drainer to a 600mm one. A bar laid over that is a second level rather than a wider one, so it wants a spine underneath it and a settled detail where the two heights meet. The seating side decides the piece; the wall side never does. Stone is £110 to £550 per square metre supply only, and the templating, the fabrication and the fitting each carry their own line.

What has to be finished before you can template?

Where a run finishes into a reveal, the depth of that reveal is taken at worktop height and nowhere else. Where the nose has to be carried past something fixed the support moves rather than the stone, since a corbel landing in the knee space is worse than no corbel at all. The stone is cut to the obstruction as found. Confirm the finished height you want and whether the bar is seen from both sides, and tell us who is building the frame and when it will be complete. The householder is normally on site at template, and that is the right time to settle sink position, tap centres and overhang rather than agree them by email. A home bar is discretionary work, so the edge profile, the corbel detail and the radius on the nose are worth settling properly rather than defaulting to whatever is quickest. A bar is permanent joinery with stone on top of it.

Is taking the old top off part of the job?

What comes out goes by the same route the new stone comes in by, which is why that route is walked before anything is lifted. Old tops are screwed or glued from underneath, so the drawer boxes come out before the worktop does. Take the old tops off yourself if you would rather, and the quote simply carries one line fewer. A drive behind an electric gate depends on somebody being in to open it and on the gate staying open while the load comes off. A trade bar is fitted around opening times, so the window the van has and the window the room has are rarely the same window. The van stands for the frame as well as the top.

Is a full-height stone splashback worth doing?

It is quoted by area like the worktop, so a long run is a material line rather than a trim. Both are templated after the worktop is down and settled, because they are cut to the wall itself. If it is a decision for later, say so at the template: the match is a question about the batch. The original kitchen was a small rear room with a larder and a back door, and nearly all of them have since been opened into the dining room. A bar here usually appears at the open end of a knocked-through kitchen and dining room, where it is read from both sides and both sides have to be finished to the same standard. A long counter is a beam before it is a surface.

How many visits does a North Harrow worktop take?

The fitting itself is one visit: a plain run is a morning, an island with splashbacks takes most of the day. The same firm templates and fits. Nobody else is brought in to install. Upstands and splashbacks are templated after the worktop is down and settled, so they are a separate visit. Where the side return has been filled in, one side of the new room is old brick and the other is new blockwork, and the two do not behave alike. A bar top put into a room like that is an overhang question first, because the nose has to carry people leaning on it long after the slab has stopped being interesting. A bar top is a structural piece with a polished face on it.

Is a drainer groove worth it in a small North Harrow kitchen?

The alternative stands on the surface, so the choice is losing worktop permanently or only while you are draining. Grooves are machined in the workshop at the same time as the bowl cut-out, because they cannot be done well in a kitchen. Grooves are machined into the surface rather than applied to it, so there is nothing to come loose later. The boiler has usually been moved into the kitchen at some point, with its flue through the outer leaf and its pipework surface run to the nearest corner. None of that stops a bar being fitted level, but it does mean the top is set to a datum of its own and packed off the frame rather than followed down to the floor. People push against the front edge, so the front edge gets the steel.
