Orpington kitchens
What the kitchens here are actually like
These kitchens have usually been retiled twice and knocked through once, and both of those leave marks the worktop has to deal with. Protection down, dry-lay, scribe, then bond: the order matters more in a difficult room than an easy one. One visit, our own installers.
A broad mix, but the recurring one is the Orpington bungalow: a wide, shallow kitchen with worktop on three sides, low windows and a wall-mounted boiler, where the owner wants an undermount sink and a drainer grooved into the stone. The inter-war semis nearby run to standard rear-extension kitchen-diners.
Bungalow kitchens here nearly always want a drainer grooved rather than a separate rack, and that has to be cut in the workshop with the sink, not on site.
Everything on one level means no stairs, no landings and no turns, which is about the easiest carry there is in domestic work. Access is usually the easy part here, as most of these have a side gate and a back door straight into the kitchen, so we carry down the side alley rather than through the house and keep the mess outside. Walked, measured, protected, then lifted.
The mix here is 1930s semi, post-war detached, bungalow and town-centre flats. Which of those you have decides most of what follows.
True everywhere
Worktop installation, in short
- One visit. A straightforward run is a morning; an island and splashbacks take most of the day.
- Every piece is carried in by hand, and stone does not bend.
- We seat and seal the sink and hob. We do not connect water, waste, gas or electrics.
- Floors and units are protected before anything comes through the door.
Covered on our south east London run. Fitted 3–7 working days from template.
1930s and inter-war semis
Getting stone into the room
Generally easy. Off-street parking on most of the residential roads, and bungalows mean no stairs at all, which is the single biggest time saver on a stone fit.

What gets asked for here
Extension kitchens are usually specified long before they are buildable, so the run lengths on the drawing and the run lengths in the room are different numbers. Where the window is fixed there is no second day to fall back on, so the prep list matters more than usual. The prep list is not optional.
Second or third on the list around here, after worktop replacement. Same visit, same bench, same crew, same lead time.

True everywhere, stated once
Installation is the day the templating either pays off or does not. Almost everything that makes it hard is a property of the building rather than the stone.

Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Questions
Worktop installation in Orpington
If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.
Do you actually work in Orpington, or just list it?
Yes. Orpington is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are BR5, BR6. It is worked on our south east London run, along with the rest of Bromley. Gravel and block paving both look like hard standing and neither takes a loaded trolley, so the run from tail lift to door gets boarded. The fitting slot is set around it, which is why we ask about it when the date is booked and not before we leave the yard. It is why the arrival time is what it is. We template in your kitchen and fit in your kitchen, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.
What is different about worktop installation in Orpington?
Bungalow kitchens are frequently extended into the rear or opened into the roof space, so the room is part original and part new build. The fitting itself is slower than the carry: original plaster on the party wall and around the old chimney breast is rarely square to the run, so back scribes get cut on site, and where a return wraps into a breast recess we template that shoulder tight and ease it in. Walked, measured, protected, then lifted. Bungalow kitchens here nearly always want a drainer grooved rather than a separate rack, and that has to be cut in the workshop with the sink, not on site.
Is access a problem in Orpington?
Generally easy. Off-street parking on most of the residential roads, and bungalows mean no stairs at all, which is the single biggest time saver on a stone fit. Even an easy kerbside carry wants the pavement clear at the tail lift, because a three-metre piece on edge has a swing radius nobody expects until it is swinging. The fitting day is planned backwards from that point, before anything comes off the van. That is what the morning is planned around.
Do you do much worktop installation around Orpington?
It is one of the three we do most here, behind worktop replacement. Same template visit, same workshop, same installers either way. Extension kitchens are usually specified long before they are buildable, so the run lengths on the drawing and the run lengths in the room are different numbers. One visit, with the sink and hob seated and sealed before we leave. One visit, done properly. Rear and side-return extensions are where the islands appear, and an island is the piece that decides whether one slab does the kitchen or two. The fitting day is scheduled to suit that rather than to suit the diary. Sealed before we leave.
What decides the price of a worktop in Orpington?
Three runs means two internal corners, and each corner is a decision about mitre or butt joint before anything is nested. Joins are pulled with suction clamps and finished flush, then colour-matched, which is the last thing done rather than the first. The join is the last thing finished. Material is £110-£550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.
What do I need to sort out first?
Anything that has to stay accessible, a stopcock, a gas meter, a riser panel, is marked on the template so the stone is cut around it instead of over it. Rushing that is what leaves a gap you look at every morning for fifteen years. Dry-lay, mark, cut, then bond. Unlock and clear the side gate and back door, and move bins, planters and washing lines out of the alley run. The householder is normally on site at template, and that is the right time to settle sink position, tap centres and overhang rather than agree them by email. A half-day of access is not a fitting day, and it is better to say so at booking than to find out at eleven. Protection goes down first.
