Farnborough kitchens

What the kitchens here are actually like

village cottage1930s detached1960s detachedbungalow

Long perimeter runs and an island mean level has to hold across the whole room rather than along any one wall. Protection down, dry-lay, scribe, then bond: the order matters more in a difficult room than an easy one. One visit, our own installers.

Old village properties along the high street have small, awkward kitchens with low beams and uneven floors, while the surrounding post-war detached have conventional square kitchens being opened into the dining room. Ranges and freestanding cookers are common, which means a gap in the run rather than a cut-out.

Doorways are low and narrow, which is a genuine constraint on piece length before anything else is considered. What costs time is the distance from where the van can park to the door, often down a long drive or across gravel, so we plan the carry with enough hands and board the route where it crosses gravel or lawn. The slow parts are slow for a reason.

What we are usually templating in is village cottage, 1930s detached, 1960s detached and bungalow. The differences between them show up at template, not at enquiry.

True everywhere

Worktop installation, in short

  • One visit. A straightforward run is a morning; an island and splashbacks take most of the day.
  • Every piece is carried in by hand, and stone does not bend.
  • We seat and seal the sink and hob. We do not connect water, waste, gas or electrics.
  • Floors and units are protected before anything comes through the door.

Covered on our south east London run. Fitted 3–7 working days from template.

What gets asked for here

This is one of the three jobs that come up most here, behind worktop templating. It is the same template visit, the same workshop and the same installers either way.

The building, and what it does to the job

In the old cottages nothing is level or plumb, so we scribe against the walls and expect to take 15mm out of a template edge on site.

Getting stone into the room

The village high street is narrow with no loading room and traffic behind you, so unloading has to be quick and often at an angle; the surrounding closes are far easier with drives.

A front drive is the best thing that can happen to a fitting day, because the tail lift comes down within a few metres of the door and nothing is on a clock. We aim for the first slot of the day where parking is tight, because that is when the street is emptiest. We would rather ask than guess.

Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Questions

Worktop installation in Farnborough

If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.

Do you cover Farnborough?

Yes. Farnborough is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are BR6. It is worked on our south east London run, along with the rest of Bromley. Off-street parking means the van stays put all day, so tools, packers and the offcut we would rather have than not are all within reach. The fitting slot is set around it, which is why we ask about it when the date is booked and not before we leave the yard. It is why the arrival time is what it is. We template in your kitchen and fit in your kitchen, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.

Does the housing in Farnborough change how worktop installation works?

Lime plaster over rubble moves in and out enough that a single long panel will show a gap somewhere along its length. Access through the property is usually the simplest of any archetype, with wide doors and generous rooms, so we can often carry a full-length piece straight in without a planned join. That is the shape of the day. In the old cottages nothing is level or plumb, so we scribe against the walls and expect to take 15mm out of a template edge on site.

How does the stone actually reach a kitchen in Farnborough?

The village high street is narrow with no loading room and traffic behind you, so unloading has to be quick and often at an angle; the surrounding closes are far easier with drives. A short hard approach with no steps means a full-length piece can be walked in flat by two people rather than turned up on edge. Finding it out on the morning costs the whole slot, because there is no second route to fall back on. That is what the morning is planned around.

Is worktop installation common in Farnborough?

It is one of the three we do most here, behind worktop templating. Same template visit, same workshop, same installers either way. Rear and side-return extensions are where the islands appear, and an island is the piece that decides whether one slab does the kitchen or two. One visit, with the sink and hob seated and sealed before we leave. One visit, done properly. A new extension slab is not automatically level, and that wants checking before templating rather than after the stone is cut. The fitting day is scheduled to suit that rather than to suit the diary. Sealed before we leave.

Why do two Farnborough kitchens the same size price differently?

A galley puts the sink on one side and the hob on the other, which spreads the cut-outs across two pieces instead of weakening one. On the day that means dry-laying the whole layout first and only then pulling and bonding the joins. Dry-lay first, always. Material is £110-£550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.

What has to be finished before you can template?

A run can measure dead right at both ends and still belly out in the middle, which only appears once the template plots the intermediate points. Rushing that is what leaves a gap you look at every morning for fifteen years. Eased in, never forced. Give us the hardest, shortest approach to the door you can, clear of parked cars, and warn us of any soft ground, steps or gravel on the route. Where someone is living in the house through the work, the strip-out and the fit are planned so the kitchen is out of use for a day and not a week. Floors and units are protected before anything comes through the door, communal or otherwise. Access for the whole slot, or a different day.
