The vanity tops we do in Farnborough follow the same process every time, and it is the kitchen rather than the process that decides how the day actually goes. Old village properties along the high street have small, awkward kitchens with low beams and uneven floors, while the surrounding post-war detached have conventional square kitchens being opened into the dining room. Ranges and freestanding cookers are common, which means a gap in the run rather than a cut-out. The point of the visit is that you stop guessing and get a number you can hold us to.
There is usually a cellar head or a hatch somewhere in the floor, and whatever sits above it has to stay liftable. A vanity top is where all of that turns up in miniature, with the basin, the tap holes and a splash return crowded into a few hundred millimetres of stone. A vanity is priced as its own piece, not as a length of worktop.
A period cottage has low ceilings, thick rubble-filled walls and a floor that has never been level, and the worktop is the thing that has to look straight. These houses usually have en-suites as well, and the tops for all of them are worth cutting from one slab so the rooms relate across the floors. The window over the basin is the one the top answers to.
On these streets the housing is village cottage, 1930s detached, 1960s detached and bungalow. None of them is harder than the others; they are awkward in different ways.
