A join cannot cross a cut-out, so a sink mid-run takes away the position you would have used. An island often runs in one piece where a wall run cannot. Slabs come in finite sizes, so a long run needs a join whatever the room looks like. A peninsula projects into circulation space, so its outer corners usually take a radius rather than a point, and that radius is agreed at template rather than assumed. An external corner on a counter is seen from both sides at once, so it is mitred rather than butted and the pattern is carried round it. The low shelf is drawn to the counter above it, not to the wall.

Supply through us runs £110 to £550 per square metre for the slab alone, which is the line you would be removing. If your own slab breaks there is no matching replacement to hand, and that is the real difference. Stone cut to somebody else’s drawing cannot usefully be re-cut to yours. Upgrading a builder-finish kitchen is mostly a swap, so the cost sits in the material choice rather than in the shape of the room. A fit-out programme puts the counter last, behind the joiner and the electrician, which is exactly when the least time is left to template it. A repeatable counter needs a repeatable material.
