St Katharine Docks kitchens
The buildings and streets around St Katharine Docks
People often assume reception counter work in St Katharine Docks is a straight swap, and sometimes it is, though the kitchen usually has an opinion about that. Apartments around the marina have modest kitchens, often 2.4m to 3m in a galley or L opening to a dining area, with plenty of duplexes where the kitchen sits on the entry level. Refits here are almost always replacements in a sound kitchen rather than a full knock-through. Ask for the design and quotation visit. It is free, it carries no obligation, and it settles all of this properly.
Communal heating pipework rises through the flat and is boxed in at floor and at ceiling, and none of it moves for a kitchen. A reception counter answers to the building it stands in more than to the drawing, because it is fabricated to a carcass somebody else has already built and fixed. Every counter starts with the joiner finishing.
The skim over dense block is thin and dishes out round a hole, so a fixing wants a hammer drill and the dust travels through the flat. Estates of this kind carry the buildings that serve them: a housing office, a health centre, a community hall, and every one has a counter the public queues at. Protected finishes decide the fixings before the drawing is finished.
The mix here is 1970s-80s marina apartment block, converted dock warehouse and recent infill apartment. Knowing which one it is before we arrive is half the survey done.
True everywhere
Reception counters and desks, in short
- A counter on a joiner's carcass is templated after the carcass is in, not from the drawing.
- The lower transaction shelf needs clear knee space beneath it, which decides where a leg or a gable can go.
- Long runs are joined over a support, and the join is placed where the eye does not follow the counter.
- Cable and card-reader apertures are cut in the workshop, not on site.

The place
Why St Katharine Docks is its own job
A worktop is made to fit one kitchen, and in St Katharine Docks the kitchen and the way into it are what we work from. The estate is privately managed with barrier-controlled vehicle entry, so the van needs booking in and a time-limited pass to reach the block door. Once inside it is a flat, level route across paved quayside, but lifts are small 1970s cars and some blocks route deliveries through a basement service corridor. Barrier and dwell-time limits mean the slab comes off the van in one go, so the crew and the route need to be sorted before it arrives. Every run, cut-out, edge and join goes on its own line of the quote, so you can see exactly what you are paying for.
The work
What reception counters involves
What this is not is joinery. We do not build the carcass, and it has to be finished, fixed and level before there is anything for a templater to measure. The whole desk is dry-assembled at the works, returns and openings included, and checked against the drawing before a single piece is wrapped. You end up with a lower surface a seated visitor can genuinely use, at the height the accessibility standard sets rather than the height that suited the elevation.
A reception counter has a public face and a staff face, and the two are detailed differently because they are used differently. A curved front is cut on a waterjet from the same drawing the joiner built the carcass to, so the two radii agree. A housing office or surgery counter is queued at all day, so the front edge is eased and the surface specified for wear rather than for looks. The join sits over a support and out of the sightline.

The money
What it costs in St Katharine Docks
The lower transaction shelf is the line people do not expect, since it carries its own top, its own finished edges and its own support, and its height comes from an accessibility standard rather than from choice. Short lengths nest well and waste little, so the material line is usually the kindest part of a galley quote. Take £110 to £550 per square metre as a floor to reason from rather than a quote, since it covers material alone and every operation is added to it as a named line. The knee recess costs support, and the support is shown.

The shape of the run
A galley closed at one end takes a short return across the top, and that little piece carries the same edge work, the same handling and nearly the same cost as a full length. A counter has the same argument in miniature: a straight run nests kindly on a slab, and every return costs yield. Where the counter turns, the pattern turns with it.

What St Katharine Docks asks for
We rank the domestic jobs against a neighbourhood's building stock, and this is not one of them. For the record, the stock here asks for worktop replacement, worktop installation and worktop templating. The commercial work is surveyed and fitted to the same standard.

The carry, and what it rules out
The barrier, the entry code and the estate rules decide when a van can get near the door, and none of that is negotiable on the day. The lower transaction shelf is short and easily handled; it is the upper counter that has to be walked in on edge and turned at every corner. Every re-grip near a finished front edge is planned out beforehand.

Getting stone into a St Katharine Docks kitchen
The estate is privately managed with barrier-controlled vehicle entry, so the van needs booking in and a time-limited pass to reach the block door. Once inside it is a flat, level route across paved quayside, but lifts are small 1970s cars and some blocks route deliveries through a basement service corridor.
Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Questions
Questions we get asked in St Katharine Docks
If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.
Do you cover St Katharine Docks?
Yes. St Katharine Docks is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are E1W. It is worked on our east London run, along with the rest of Tower Hamlets. A skip, a delivery lorry or a run of scaffolding takes the frontage the van needed, so the street is worth a look the day before rather than on the morning. A commercial frontage rarely has anywhere to stop, so the unload is timed rather than assumed and the counter pieces come off first. Where the goods entrance is round the back, the carry is priced from there. The work comes to you. We template in your kitchen and fit in your kitchen, with nothing to visit or collect.
Does the housing in St Katharine Docks change how reception counters works?
The handrail is fixed to the wall side of the flight, so the clear width at hand height is a hundred millimetres less than the stair measures at the tread. Estates of this kind carry the buildings that serve them, and every one has a counter the public queues at: a housing office, a health centre, a community hall, a library. A desk seen from a whole floor is finished on every edge. A live soil stack cannot be chased back into the wall, so the depth it steals is permanent and the run is planned around it rather than through it. What a counter is scribed to is the joiner's carcass rather than the plaster, which is why it is templated after the carcass is fixed and never before. A counter standing proud of the wall has nothing to hide behind.
How does the stone actually reach a kitchen in St Katharine Docks?
Estate roads are often too tight for a long-wheelbase van to turn, so the carry starts a good deal further from the door than a map suggests. A counter top is one long piece with no run of cabinets to break it, so the route decides the join count before the sightlines get a vote. The counter is sized to the way in before it is sized to the slab. Where parking runs down both sides the road is left as a single lane, and a van standing in it has to be somewhere it does not stop a bin lorry. Loading bays belonging to the building are booked by whoever holds the lease, and that is seldom whoever ordered the counter. An early slot buys an empty street and an empty lobby at once.
Is reception counters what St Katharine Docks is known for?
No, not particularly, and it would be easy to say otherwise. What the research on this patch actually lists is worktop replacement, worktop installation and worktop templating. That is the local housing talking rather than anything about the job. It is priced, cut and fitted no differently here than anywhere else we cover. Agents book this work at short notice, because the void only becomes a real date once the outgoing tenant confirms they are going. Counters are nearly always one-offs, so the saving that comes from repeating a specification is not usually on the table here. Apertures change from desk to desk, so each drawing is its own. A managed portfolio tends to repeat one specification across every flat, which keeps later repairs and replacements simple to order. Where an operator is fitting out several receptions, the counters come off one slab run so the desks read as a set rather than as neighbours. A weekend fit is planned as a weekend fit from the outset.
What am I actually paying for, line by line?
Walls at both ends mean two scribes on every piece, and a run that has to drop between two fixed points has no tolerance left to give away. The return between the high counter and the low shelf never nests neatly, and it is what decides how much slab the desk swallows. Support positions go on the drawing before the top is nested. The supply-only figure for material runs £110 to £550 per square metre, and templating, fabrication and fitting are lines of their own.
Is there anything I have to finish before the template in St Katharine Docks?
Boxing built in plasterboard on a light frame will take no useful fixing, so nothing bears on it and the stone is carried off the carcasses either side. A lobby wall that leans shows itself along the back return, so that edge is cut to the line the wall actually takes. The carcass is levelled before the top is ever offered up. Tell us the hours the building can be worked in and whether the lobby stays open, and send photographs of every corner so we can find the ducts before we draw. Where ownership is split across a building, the common parts belong to someone else and the carry route is negotiated rather than assumed. The same split runs through commercial property: a landlord fitting out a shell and a tenant fitting out their own reception want different things from one counter. Where the freeholder keeps the lobby, the finishes are protected first.
What if the base units are out of level?
Stone does not flex, so a run that rocks on its carcasses rocks just as badly once it is stone. A long top on units that were shimmed once and never checked is the commonest version of this, and it is cheap to fix beforehand. The check comes before the measuring rather than after, because the whole drawing is set out from that plane. A stack boxed diagonally across a corner leaves a triangle of dead space, and the top is cut to that triangle rather than to a square return. Where the floor falls away across a lobby the carcass is packed level first, because the top cannot correct anything sitting under it. A shelf over a knee recess cannot be packed, so it is cut true.
What do you need from me for the sink and hob cut-outs?
The tap hole is drilled in the workshop too, and its position depends on how far the tap has to swing. If the sink or hob changes after the template, the drawing changes first and nothing is cut meanwhile. A Belfast or butler sink has to be installed and at its final height before the template, because the stone is cut to sit on it. An aisle under a metre stops being a working space the moment two people are in it, and the depth of the tops either side is what decides whether that happens. An external corner on a counter is seen from both sides at once, so it is mitred rather than butted and the pattern is carried round it. A shallow shelf still needs a support run of its own.
How much upkeep is a stone worktop?
Upkeep is settled when the slab is chosen, since it belongs to the material rather than the fabrication. Topping a seal up is a wipe-on job with a cloth. Bleach and limescale remover harm a polished finish rather than clean it, whichever material is on the units. The kitchen door is a fire door onto a lobby that is also the escape route, so nothing can be stood in that lobby while the work goes on. These are the counters where the lower transaction shelf earns its keep, because the people served at it are the people the standard was written for, so the knee space and the clear approach to it are checked on site rather than taken off a drawing. Clinic counters carry a card reader and a screen at the low level.
Is a full-height splashback practical in a St Katharine Docks kitchen?
Tiling and stone can meet, but where they meet is decided before the template rather than after. What decides between them is usually the wall: what it is built of, how flat it is, and where the sockets ended up. Stone up a wall is heavier than tile and bonded rather than hung, so the wall has to be sound. The first kitchen was fitted by the authority to a standard layout, so the waste, the gas point and the sockets are all still where that layout put them. A housing office counter is used hard and cleaned harder, so the surface is specified for wear and the front edge for being leaned on all day. The lobby was finished by somebody else, and the counter joins it.

We recently had a Calacatta Gold worktop installed by Worktop Worx and are really pleased with the result. It has completely transformed our kitchen, much brighter, modern, and high-end compared to our old wooden surface. The team were professional, efficient, and the finish is excellent with great attention to detail. The worktop looks amazing and is very practical for everyday use. Highly recommend Worktop Worx for anyone looking for quality quartz worktops.
