Strand kitchens

What the kitchens here are actually like

Victorian commercial blockEdwardian chambershotel and office building

A hundred and forty years of alterations sit under the current kitchen, and the worktop is what has to sit flat on top of all of it. Two to three hours on site, once the units are fitted, fixed and level. The room as it is, to the millimetre.

Barely any family housing - the stone work here is tea points, staff kitchens and small serviced apartment kitchenettes in office and hotel buildings. Standard job is a 2m to 3m counter with an undermount bowl, a boiling tap cut-out and a matching upstand, repeated across several floors. Access is via a basement loading bay with a height restriction, a booked goods lift, and building security requiring method statements in advance. Red route with no stopping along the Strand itself and constant event and works closures around Aldwych and Trafalgar Square.

Half-landings mean the back of the house sits at a slightly different level from the front, and a knocked-through kitchen crosses that line. Victorian party walls and chimney-breast returns bow along their length, so the template plots the real line rather than assuming a straight one - the template picks up points every few hundred millimetres down the back of the run and the drawing carries that curve through to the saw. No stone is ever cut from a plan.

What we are usually templating in is Victorian commercial block, Edwardian chambers and hotel and office building. The differences between them show up at template, not at enquiry.

True everywhere

Worktop templating, in short

  • Two to three hours on site for a typical kitchen.
  • Units must be fitted, fixed and level first. No stone is ever cut from a plan.
  • Sink, tap and hob must be physically on site, not just ordered.
  • A Belfast or butler sink must be installed and at its final height.

Covered on our central London run. Fitted 3–7 working days from template.

Getting stone into the room

Loading exemptions on red routes are narrow, time-limited and heavily camera-enforced, so we plan around them rather than relying on them. It is noted on the job sheet at template so the fitting crew inherit the answer rather than rediscovering it. The templater needs a proper stop, not a pause.

What gets asked for here

This is one of the three jobs that come up most here, behind worktop fabrication. It is the same template visit, the same workshop and the same installers either way.

Repeat tea points across floors look identical on the drawing but never are - template each floor separately, the risers and boxings move.

Getting stone into a Strand kitchen

Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Questions

Worktop templating in Strand

If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.

Do you cover Strand?

Yes. Strand is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are WC2R, WC2N. It is worked on our central London run, along with the rest of Westminster. The realistic answer on a main road is an early slot, a spotter on the van and pieces staged in one movement rather than several trips. The templating visit needs somewhere to stop for two or three hours, which is a different problem from unloading for twenty minutes. The templater needs a proper stop, not a pause. We template in your kitchen and fit in your kitchen, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.

Does the housing in Strand change how worktop templating works?

Edwardian terraces are wider and taller than the Victorian houses next to them, so the kitchen usually takes a full-width rear room rather than a narrow outrigger. Victorian party walls and chimney-breast returns bow along their length, so the template plots the real line rather than assuming a straight one - the template picks up points every few hundred millimetres down the back of the run and the drawing carries that curve through to the saw. Recorded as it is, not as it was drawn. Repeat tea points across floors look identical on the drawing but never are - template each floor separately, the risers and boxings move.

How does the stone actually reach a kitchen in Strand?

Red route with no stopping along the Strand itself and constant event and works closures around Aldwych and Trafalgar Square. Access is via a basement loading bay with a height restriction, a booked goods lift, and building security requiring method statements in advance. A car that takes 2.4m on the diagonal will not take a three-metre worktop however it is stood, and there is no trimming it on the landing. A template taken without walking the route produces a drawing that cuts beautifully and will not go in. The template records it along with everything else.

Is worktop templating common in Strand?

It is one of the three we do most here, behind worktop fabrication. Same template visit, same workshop, same installers either way. A new extension slab is not automatically level, and that wants checking before templating rather than after the stone is cut. The template visit is booked once the units are genuinely in, not when they are nearly in. The room as it is, not as it was drawn. The junction between the original room and the extension is the point to watch, because the two floors rarely sit at the same height. Two to three hours on site, with the sink, tap and hob physically present. Units fitted, fixed and level first.

Why do two Strand kitchens the same size price differently?

Galley runs are usually short enough to come out of a single slab, so the material band you choose does more to the total than the room shape does. The template records every angle in that shape as it actually is rather than as the plan drew it. Real angles, not plan angles. Material is £110-£550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.

What has to be finished before you can template?

Boxing is rarely the same depth at worktop height as it is at floor level, so measuring it low down is the usual reason a top will not sit back. The template plots it as it is, at the exact height the worktop will sit, and the drawing carries that through. Measured at worktop height, nowhere else. Units fixed and packed level over the sloping floor, walls replastered and dry at their final thickness (tiling and splashbacks go on after the worktop, never before), and the sink, tap and hob physically on site, with a Belfast sink built in and set at its finished height. Where someone is living in the house through the work, the strip-out and the fit are planned so the kitchen is out of use for a day and not a week. A template booked hopefully around another trade is the commonest cause of a wasted visit. Fitted, fixed and level, then we come.
