Surbiton kitchens
What the kitchens here are actually like
Thick external walls, deep window reveals and boxed risers mean the runs are templated to what is there rather than to a rectangle. Two to three hours on site, once the units are fitted, fixed and level. Sink, tap and hob on site, not on order.
Two clear streams: 1930s semis with a rear kitchen extended to a 3.6m run and a peninsula, and Art Deco and interwar mansion flats with original galley kitchens roughly 2m by 3m where the units stay and the tops, upstands and sink are renewed.
Interwar flats have solid but uneven screed floors and out-of-square walls, so a template beats a drawing every time here.
Balcony access and long communal corridors are often the carry route, and both are narrower than they look with a piece on edge. Boxing depth is taken at worktop height at several points, because measuring it low down is why a top will not sit back. Two to three hours, once the units are in.
On these streets the housing is Victorian villa, Edwardian terrace, 1930s Art Deco mansion block and 1930s semi. That mix is why two jobs on the same road can run completely differently.
True everywhere
Worktop templating, in short
- Two to three hours on site for a typical kitchen.
- Units must be fitted, fixed and level first. No stone is ever cut from a plan.
- Sink, tap and hob must be physically on site, not just ordered.
- A Belfast or butler sink must be installed and at its final height.
Covered on our south west London run. Fitted 3–7 working days from template.

What gets asked for here
It is on the shortlist for this patch rather than at the top of it, because worktop replacement comes up more often. Nothing about the process differs between the two.
period detached houses and villas
Getting stone into the room
Wide tree-lined roads with driveways on the semis, but the mansion blocks have communal entrances, half-landings and small lifts, plus resident-only parking courts with no visitor bays.

The building, and what it does to the job
A run can measure dead right at both ends and still belly out in the middle, which only appears once the template plots the intermediate points. The template plots it as it is, at the exact height the worktop will sit, and the drawing carries that through. Plotted, not estimated.
period detached houses and villas
True everywhere, stated once
A template records what the building actually did, not what the plan intended. How far those two things diverge is entirely a function of when the house was built.

Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Questions
Worktop templating in Surbiton
If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.
Do you cover Surbiton?
Yes. Surbiton is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are KT6. It is worked on our south west London run, along with the rest of Kingston upon Thames. Permit hours are what matters, not the permit itself, because a bay that frees up at six in the evening is no use for a template at ten. It is noted on the job sheet at template so the fitting crew inherit the answer rather than rediscovering it. Two hours is the realistic figure. We template in your kitchen and fit in your kitchen, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.
Does the housing in Surbiton change how worktop templating works?
These blocks were built with a lift from new, which will usually take a worktop and almost never takes a full-length island piece. Mansion-block kitchens usually have a serviced riser or boxed pipework somewhere in the run, and the boxing is rarely the same depth from one end to the other, so the template takes the depth at worktop height at several points rather than one reading. Recorded as it is, not as it was drawn. Interwar flats have solid but uneven screed floors and out-of-square walls, so a template beats a drawing every time here.
How does the stone actually reach a kitchen in Surbiton?
Wide tree-lined roads with driveways on the semis, but the mansion blocks have communal entrances, half-landings and small lifts, plus resident-only parking courts with no visitor bays. Communal stairs get boarded and the handrail padded, and we walk the route with a tape before the first piece leaves the van. The templater measures that route on the same visit, so the drawing leaves site already knowing the maximum piece. It goes on the drawing with the run dimensions.
Is worktop templating common in Surbiton?
It is one of the three we do most here, behind worktop replacement. Same template visit, same workshop, same installers either way.
Why do two Surbiton kitchens the same size price differently?
A galley puts the sink on one side and the hob on the other, which spreads the cut-outs across two pieces instead of weakening one. The template records every angle in that shape as it actually is rather than as the plan drew it. The drawing leaves site complete. Material is £110-£550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.
What has to be finished before you can template?
A run can measure dead right at both ends and still belly out in the middle, which only appears once the template plots the intermediate points. The template plots it as it is, at the exact height the worktop will sit, and the drawing carries that through. Plotted, not estimated. Boxing and riser casings built, cased and finished to their final surface, units fixed and levelled, and building access, lift booking and porter arrangements agreed so both the template visit and the later fit can run. Mixed ownership means the decision-maker is not always the person who lets us in, so it is worth being clear early about who signs the quote off. A template booked hopefully around another trade is the commonest cause of a wasted visit. Fitted, fixed and level, then we come.
