Surbiton kitchens

What the kitchens here are actually like

Victorian villaEdwardian terrace1930s Art Deco mansion block1930s semi

Thick external walls, deep window reveals and boxed risers mean the runs are templated to what is there rather than to a rectangle. Protection down, dry-lay, scribe, then bond: the order matters more in a difficult room than an easy one. The route is walked before the first lift.

Two clear streams: 1930s semis with a rear kitchen extended to a 3.6m run and a peninsula, and Art Deco and interwar mansion flats with original galley kitchens roughly 2m by 3m where the units stay and the tops, upstands and sink are renewed.

Interwar flats have solid but uneven screed floors and out-of-square walls, so a template beats a drawing every time here.

The original kitchen was a small service room, so what is there now is a knock-through and the junction between the two floors is rarely level. This is the most managed day we do, with a hard finish time set by the block rather than by the work. Walked, measured, protected, then lifted.

The buildings themselves are mostly Victorian villa, Edwardian terrace, 1930s Art Deco mansion block and 1930s semi. A quote that ignores which one you have is guessing.

True everywhere

Worktop installation, in short

  • One visit. A straightforward run is a morning; an island and splashbacks take most of the day.
  • Every piece is carried in by hand, and stone does not bend.
  • We seat and seal the sink and hob. We do not connect water, waste, gas or electrics.
  • Floors and units are protected before anything comes through the door.

Covered on our south west London run. Fitted 3–7 working days from template.

What gets asked for here

This is one of the three jobs that come up most here, behind worktop replacement. It is the same template visit, the same workshop and the same installers either way.

period detached houses and villas

The building, and what it does to the job

The block's permitted works hours and the booked goods lift slot, which set a hard stop on the day whatever stage we are at.

period detached houses and villas

Getting stone into the room

Wide tree-lined roads with driveways on the semis, but the mansion blocks have communal entrances, half-landings and small lifts, plus resident-only parking courts with no visitor bays.

Stone goes up on edge, and it is the half-landing turn rather than the flight itself that sets the maximum piece. Finding it out on the morning costs the whole slot, because there is no second route to fall back on. It gets checked before the first piece is lifted.

True everywhere, stated once

Installation is the day the templating either pays off or does not. Almost everything that makes it hard is a property of the building rather than the stone.

Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Questions

Worktop installation in Surbiton

If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.

Is Surbiton on your patch?

Yes. Surbiton is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are KT6. It is worked on our south west London run, along with the rest of Kingston upon Thames. Without a bay the van ends up on a single yellow with a crew member watching it, which takes a pair of hands off the carry. The fitting slot is set around it, which is why we ask about it when the date is booked and not before we leave the yard. The day is built around that window. We template in your kitchen and fit in your kitchen, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.

Why would worktop installation in Surbiton be any different from anywhere else?

The original kitchen was a small service room, so what is there now is a knock-through and the junction between the two floors is rarely level. This is the most managed day we do, with a hard finish time set by the block rather than by the work. Walked, measured, protected, then lifted. Interwar flats have solid but uneven screed floors and out-of-square walls, so a template beats a drawing every time here.

How would you get a worktop into a property in Surbiton?

Wide tree-lined roads with driveways on the semis, but the mansion blocks have communal entrances, half-landings and small lifts, plus resident-only parking courts with no visitor bays. A walk-up with winders at every half-landing means the piece is rested and re-gripped on the way, so the crew size goes up before the piece size comes down. The fitting day is planned backwards from that point, before anything comes off the van. That is what the morning is planned around.

Do you do much worktop installation around Surbiton?

It is one of the three we do most here, behind worktop replacement. Same template visit, same workshop, same installers either way. Quartz suits let property well: no sealing, no annual maintenance, and nothing an incoming tenant has to be told to look after. The fitting day is scheduled to suit that rather than to suit the diary. The prep list is not optional. A worktop replacement between tenancies is a single-day job by design, because the flat is not earning while it is empty. Where the window is fixed there is no second day to fall back on, so the prep list matters more than usual. Sealed before we leave.

What moves the number on a quote around here?

Galley runs are usually short enough to come out of a single slab, so the material band you choose does more to the total than the room shape does. A layout that has been packed and levelled run by run instead of to one datum shows as a step where two pieces meet. Nothing is bonded until the whole run sits flat. Material is £110-£550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.

What needs to be ready before you come to Surbiton?

Walls that bow along their length are the normal condition rather than the exception, and a straight-cut back edge will show a shadow gap at one end and touch at the other. The back edge is eased in progressively rather than offered up once and forced. Dry-lay, mark, cut, then bond. Have the works booking confirmed with the managing agent or porter in advance, with the lift slot and any parking permit or bay suspension in place. Mixed ownership means the decision-maker is not always the person who lets us in, so it is worth being clear early about who signs the quote off. Floors and units are protected before anything comes through the door, communal or otherwise. Access for the whole slot, or a different day.
