It is easy to have a kitchen in mind for bathroom worktop fitting in Surbiton and no idea yet what your own walls are going to do to it. Two clear streams: 1930s semis with a rear kitchen extended to a 3.6m run and a peninsula, and Art Deco and interwar mansion flats with original galley kitchens roughly 2m by 3m where the units stay and the tops, upstands and sink are renewed. Either way, the next step is the same one: get someone out to look, and get the measurements written down.
The communal stair is stone with a cast iron balustrade, and the winders leave very little room to turn a long piece. A short piece carries an overflow, a waste and a sealant line, and any one of the three can spoil it. One visit, sitting between two plumbing visits.
Steel windows sit in narrow reveals with a slim cill, which leaves almost no depth for an upstand to return into. A bathroom in one of these was usually carved out of a larger room, so the proportions are odd, the ceiling is high and the reveals are deep enough to want stone in them. The bathroom in a house like this is rarely where it started.
The houses and blocks behind these jobs are Victorian villa, Edwardian terrace, 1930s Art Deco mansion block and 1930s semi. The join count is decided by which of those the room sits in.
