Tower Hill kitchens
The buildings and streets around Tower Hill
Anyone who has already replaced a kitchen in Tower Hill will tell you that reception counter work is decided by the room long before anyone opens a colour chart. The surviving Georgian houses on the quieter streets are narrow and listed in places, with kitchens at ground or basement of 2.4-3m, sloping floors and no straight walls to work to. Apartment blocks nearby are late twentieth century with conventional galley kitchens of 2.8-3.2m and a peninsula, where the job is usually replacing dated granite with a lighter engineered stone. You can leave that to us. What we need from you is a rough idea of the size and a date that suits.
Riser panels, wall boxes and the boiler cupboard sit in fixed positions the developer will not move for a worktop. Two working surfaces at two heights, a return between them and clear knee space under the lower one: that is the shape almost every counter ends up being, whatever the front elevation promised. What the public leans on is the part specified hardest.
A raised access floor may still be in place under the finish, and it is hollow, so an island is fixed to what is below rather than to the deck. The lobby was finished by the developer, so the counter is scribed to stone, terrazzo or a boarded wall somebody else laid, and that face is measured rather than assumed square. Concierge desks work as a post room and a security point at once.
The mix here is Georgian terrace on the surviving quiet streets, 1980s-90s apartment block, office conversion flat and modern hotel and residential mixed-use. That is why the same worktop costs differently two doors apart.
True everywhere
Reception counters and desks, in short
- A counter on a joiner's carcass is templated after the carcass is in, not from the drawing.
- The lower transaction shelf needs clear knee space beneath it, which decides where a leg or a gable can go.
- Long runs are joined over a support, and the join is placed where the eye does not follow the counter.
- Cable and card-reader apertures are cut in the workshop, not on site.

The place
Why Tower Hill is its own job
The reason we survey rather than work from a drawing is that a drawing tells you nothing about getting into a kitchen in Tower Hill. Tourist footfall around the Tower is constant and the surrounding roads carry heavy through traffic with no stopping, so loading has to be on the back streets in an off-peak window. Georgian properties have narrow original doors and steep straight stairs with a tight half-landing, and the listing means no removal of joinery to get a piece through. Nothing in the Georgian stock is square or level, so template with a digital arm and expect to scribe every back edge rather than cutting to a drawing. A plan on paper will not tell you any of it. A tape measure in the room will.
The work
What reception counters involves
The order includes the machining nobody sees: apertures for cable, for a card reader and for a screen stem, each with a radiused internal corner and each cut at the works. The templater attends once the carcass is in and fixed, and records what the joiner actually built rather than what the elevation showed. You get openings machined for the equipment you actually have, not holes cut through a finished top with a diamond bit in a busy lobby.
This is commercial fit-out work cut on the same saw as a kitchen, with an entirely different set of questions attached to it. Fitting is done to a lobby that has to open the next morning, so protection, sequence and clean-down are planned as part of the work. A clinic fit-out in a ground-floor shell puts a card reader and a screen at the transaction shelf, and both apertures are machined before delivery. The join sits over a support and out of the sightline.

The money
What it costs in Tower Hill
Machining is where the money sits: apertures for cable and card readers, a radiused internal corner at every opening, and a mitred return between the two levels. The return into the wall and the free end are two different details on one piece, and both are machined rather than cut square. For a rough sense of the material, £110 to £550 per square metre supply only is the honest span. Treat it as one line of a quote that will carry several more. Yield on a counter is worked out before the price leaves us.

The shape of the run
A peninsula projects into circulation space, so its outer corners usually take a radius rather than a point, and that radius is agreed at template rather than assumed. The return between the high counter and the low shelf never nests neatly, and it is what decides how much slab the desk swallows. A join in the shelf and a join in the top belong in one place.

What Tower Hill asks for
Conversions put kitchens where the services could be made to reach rather than where they belong, so runs are short and interrupted. Where an operator is fitting out several receptions, the counters come off one slab run so the desks read as a set rather than as neighbours. A desk somebody sits at all day is specified for wear.
We rank the domestic jobs against a neighbourhood's building stock, and this is not one of them. For the record, the stock here asks for worktop templating, worktop replacement and worktop installation. The commercial work is surveyed and fitted to the same standard.

Getting stone into a Tower Hill kitchen
Tourist footfall around the Tower is constant and the surrounding roads carry heavy through traffic with no stopping, so loading has to be on the back streets in an off-peak window. Georgian properties have narrow original doors and steep straight stairs with a tight half-landing, and the listing means no removal of joinery to get a piece through.
Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Questions
Questions we get asked in Tower Hill
If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.
Is Tower Hill on your patch?
Yes. Tower Hill is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are EC3N. It is worked on our City of London run, along with the rest of the Square Mile. A single red line has hours and a double red line does not, and the difference decides whether an early start is a plan or a penalty. A commercial frontage rarely has anywhere to stop, so the unload is timed rather than assumed and the counter pieces come off first. Where the bay is booked by the hour, pieces come off in fitting order. The work comes to you. We template in your kitchen and fit in your kitchen, with nothing to visit or collect.
What do the kitchens in Tower Hill do to reception counters?
The window line is a continuous ribbon with structural mullions, so a run under it stops at a mullion rather than at a wall. The commercial work in a neighbourhood of new blocks is concierge desks and ground-floor fit-outs: a managed lobby needing a counter that works as a post point and a security position at once, or a shell unit turned into a dental practice or a clinic. A stair off the pavement caps what can be turned onto the landing. A junction between an original floor and a later extension slab is almost never at the same level, so units carrying a run across it need packing first. A counter is worse off than a kitchen here, because it usually stands clear of the wall and has nothing behind it to hide a gap. A long counter magnifies every millimetre the carcass is out.
Do you have trouble getting long pieces into Tower Hill kitchens?
Every flight adds a set of handling movements, and handling is where stone gets damaged, so a fourth-floor walk-up is priced by the flight rather than by the metre. A counter top is one long piece with no run of cabinets to break it, so the route decides the join count before the sightlines get a vote. Where the lift will not take it, the join is designed rather than risked. Where a marked loading box sits on the red route the stop is legal but timed, so the unload runs as one movement with every hand on it. Loading bays belonging to the building are booked by whoever holds the lease, and that is seldom whoever ordered the counter. The transaction shelf can wait on the van; the counter cannot.
Do you get much reception counters work in Tower Hill?
No, not particularly, and it would be easy to say otherwise. What the research on this patch actually lists is worktop templating, worktop replacement and worktop installation. That is the local housing talking rather than anything about the job. It is priced, cut and fitted no differently here than anywhere else we cover. In a converted house the flat entrance and the internal doorway are usually tighter than the communal stairs, and that is easy to overlook. Counters are nearly always one-offs, so the saving that comes from repeating a specification is not usually on the table here. Card reader positions come from the operator, not the architect. Party-wall and lease conditions in a converted building set when noisy work can happen, which shapes the fitting day more than the kitchen does. A fit-out programme puts the counter last, behind the joiner and the electrician, which is exactly when the least time is left to template it. Two desks on one site still take two templates.
What decides the price of a worktop in Tower Hill?
Peninsula tops are often the longest single piece in the kitchen, so if anything in the layout is going to force a second slab it is generally this one. A counter has the same argument in miniature: a straight run nests kindly on a slab, and every return costs yield. The front edge is the one everybody touches, so it is drawn first. The stone is £110 to £550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted separately.
What do I need to sort out first?
Legs bottoming out on hard concrete or an uneven screed mean the tops of the carcasses are not one plane, and that is picked up at template rather than on fitting day. What a counter is scribed to is the joiner's carcass rather than the plaster, which is why it is templated after the carcass is fixed and never before. The scribe is cut in the shop, eased on site, and no further. Send the lift car internal dimensions and the loading bay rules with the carcass dimensions, and have the operator mark where the payment terminal and cable grommets really go. Flats bought out of managed stock keep the original kitchen dimensions long after the ownership changed, so the layout says very little about who is paying for the work. The same split runs through commercial property: a landlord fitting out a shell and a tenant fitting out their own reception want different things from one counter. Whoever signs it inherits the join positions with it.
Can you get a full-length top into an upstairs kitchen in Tower Hill?
The carry route is measured before anything is cut, so a piece that will not make the turn is split at the drawing stage rather than discovered on the day. An external stair, a side return or a rear garden counts as carry and is measured the same way. Sintered stone at 12mm changes what a staircase can take, because the same run arrives at roughly half the weight of the granite equivalent. The lower transaction shelf is short and easily handled; it is the upper counter that has to be walked in on edge and turned at every corner. Suction pads want a clean dry face, and lobby dust is not that.
What do you need from me for the sink and hob cut-outs?
A boiling tap needs a hole of its own and a cupboard below for the tank, so the units change too. Undermount bowls are cut and polished in the workshop and dry-fitted to the stone on the bench before anything is loaded. A sit-on sink and an undermounted one are different cut-outs, so which it is gets settled before the template. A peninsula is an island with one end tied to a run, which means the join between them has to be planned rather than allowed to happen. An external corner on a counter is seen from both sides at once, so it is mitred rather than butted and the pattern is carried round it. Setting out starts at the entrance end and works inward.
How much upkeep is a stone worktop?
No maintenance visit is built into the job. Soap, water, and on the porous stones a seal. Where a top takes wine, oil and lemon most days, the non-porous materials ask least of the household. Bleach and limescale remover harm a polished finish rather than clean it, whichever material is on the units. Kitchens in these were fitted as a package to a repeating plan, so the carcasses are identical from flat to flat and so are their faults. A neighbourhood of new blocks means concierge desks: a managed lobby with a counter working as a post point and a security position at the same time. Steel and brick leave a desk nothing to lean against.
Can I have stone up the wall in a Tower Hill kitchen?
Socket and switch positions have to be final before templating, because the openings are machined rather than chopped out on the wall. An upstand is a slim strip that follows the worktop up the wall; a full-height splashback runs from the worktop to the underside of the wall units. A former office building converted to flats has deep floorplates, so kitchens end up in internal rooms with no external wall at all. Ground-floor units in these developments arrive as shells and get fitted out as clinics and surgeries, where the transaction shelf carries a card reader and a screen. Nurseries want a hatch, and the hatch is on the same drawing.
