Well Hall kitchens

The buildings and streets around Well Hall

1915 Progress Estate Arts and Crafts housing1930s semiinterwar terrace

We plan the reception counters in Well Hall around access, ceiling height and what the kitchen has already been through, none of which shows up in a phone call. The Progress Estate houses have small, oddly shaped kitchens with sloping ceilings, deep window reveals and non-standard room widths, so units get cut in and the worktop ends up as several short scribed pieces rather than one long run. If you are not sure, say so when you get in touch. It is a normal answer and we work with it.

The window over the sink sits at about worktop height, so the run is set out around the sill and the reveal rather than under them. Two working surfaces at two heights, a return between them and clear knee space under the lower one: that is the shape almost every counter ends up being, whatever the front elevation promised. What the public leans on is the part specified hardest.

There is usually a shared rear alley, and whether the gate onto it is unlocked decides whether long pieces come in from the back. A dental or veterinary practice in this stock is usually a converted house, so the reception sits in what was the front room and the carcass is built around a chimney breast. The building around the lobby decides the counter more than the brief does.

What we are usually templating in is 1915 Progress Estate Arts and Crafts housing, 1930s semi and interwar terrace. They were built to different tolerances, and the stone has to absorb that.

True everywhere

Reception counters and desks, in short

  • A counter on a joiner's carcass is templated after the carcass is in, not from the drawing.
  • The lower transaction shelf needs clear knee space beneath it, which decides where a leg or a gable can go.
  • Long runs are joined over a support, and the join is placed where the eye does not follow the counter.
  • Cable and card-reader apertures are cut in the workshop, not on site.

The place

Why Well Hall is its own job

Because we work across Well Hall rather than one street of it, we know which questions are worth asking up front. A conservation area of narrow lanes, grass verges you should not drive across and very few dropped kerbs; parking is on-street and often a fair distance from the house. Nothing on this estate is a standard depth or a standard angle, template everything and assume no repeat pieces between houses. Better to know it at the design visit than to find out with a slab standing on the pavement.

The work

What reception counters involves

The lower serving surface is part of the same order rather than an extra, because a desk without one cannot serve a visitor who is seated. The route from the door to where the counter will stand is boarded and the finished floor covered before the first piece comes off the trolley. You get openings machined for the equipment you actually have, not holes cut through a finished top with a diamond bit in a busy lobby.

This is commercial fit-out work cut on the same saw as a kitchen, with an entirely different set of questions attached to it. Upstands behind a counter are scribed to the wall the counter actually meets, after the top is down rather than before. An office over a parade is reached by a stair with a half-landing, and what that landing will turn is what caps the counter piece. Dry-assembled on the bench before the van is loaded.

The money

What it costs in Well Hall

The fitting line answers to the lobby and to the hours we are allowed in it, which is why a counter fitted at night costs more than the same counter fitted in the day. Two facing runs mean two sets of edges and two scribes in a small span, which is why a compact galley rarely prices as cheaply as its area suggests. Take £110 to £550 per square metre as a floor to reason from rather than a quote, since it covers material alone and every operation is added to it as a named line. Priced by the pieces, the apertures and the hours in the lobby.

ex-local-authority flats and estates

The carry, and what it rules out

The van gets close to the door and the stone comes off the tail lift onto a trolley, which is about the shortest carry we ever get. A finished lobby is almost always still in use, so the floor is covered and the route boarded before a single piece leaves the van. A long top on edge sweeps wider than the crew carrying it.

What Well Hall asks for

The building stock on this patch tells us nothing useful about this service, because this service is not driven by it. It is driven by worktop templating, worktop fabrication and worktop replacement on the domestic side. The method does not change.

ex-local-authority flats and estates

The building, and what it does to the job

Where a run finishes into a reveal, the depth of that reveal is taken at worktop height and nowhere else. What a counter is scribed to is the joiner's carcass rather than the plaster, which is why it is templated after the carcass is fixed and never before. A lobby floor that falls is packed out under the joinery.

Access

Getting stone into a Well Hall kitchen

A conservation area of narrow lanes, grass verges you should not drive across and very few dropped kerbs; parking is on-street and often a fair distance from the house.

Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Questions

Questions we get asked in Well Hall

If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.

Is Well Hall far enough out to be a problem for you?

Yes. Well Hall is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are SE9. It is worked on our south east London run, along with the rest of Greenwich. A skip, a delivery lorry or a run of scaffolding takes the frontage the van needed, so the street is worth a look the day before rather than on the morning. Loading bays belonging to the building are booked by whoever holds the lease, and that is seldom whoever ordered the counter. A booked bay costs less than an hour of a crew standing still. The measuring and the fitting are both done at the property, so there is nothing to visit or collect.

Why would reception counters in Well Hall be any different from anywhere else?

The back door frequently opens straight into the kitchen, which is the best carry route in the house and the one people forget to mention. Practices in this stock are usually converted houses on or behind an interwar parade: a dental surgery, a veterinary practice or a small office with its reception in what was the front room. A shopfront door caps the counter length before the slab does. Sill height gets settled with the template on site, because it is one of the few dimensions nobody has measured before we arrive. A counter is worse off than a kitchen here, because it usually stands clear of the wall and has nothing behind it to hide a gap. Nothing on a counter is corrected with sealant.

What is the carry like in Well Hall?

A short hard approach with no steps means a full-length piece can be walked in flat by two people rather than turned up on edge. A counter top is one long piece with no run of cabinets to break it, so the route decides the join count before the sightlines get a vote. Where the lift will not take it, the join is designed rather than risked. Where parking runs down both sides the road is left as a single lane, and a van standing in it has to be somewhere it does not stop a bin lorry. The upper counter is the longest piece on the van, so the tail lift needs the full swing radius clear on the pavement. The tail lift needs pavement, not simply a space.

Is reception counters what Well Hall is known for?

Not really, and claiming otherwise would cost nothing and mean nothing. What the research on this patch actually lists is worktop templating, worktop fabrication and worktop replacement. It reflects the local housing rather than any difference in the work. It is quoted, cut and fitted here the same way it is anywhere else on the patch. A new extension slab is not automatically level, and that wants checking before templating rather than after the stone is cut. Counters are nearly always one-offs, so the saving that comes from repeating a specification is not usually on the table here. One visit, because a lobby cannot be closed twice. The junction between the original room and the extension is the point to watch, because the two floors rarely sit at the same height. Where an operator is fitting out several receptions, the counters come off one slab run so the desks read as a set rather than as neighbours. One counter, one drawing, and no second bite at it.

Where does the money go on a Well Hall worktop?

A galley closed at one end takes a short return across the top, and that little piece carries the same edge work, the same handling and nearly the same cost as a full length. A counter has the same argument in miniature: a straight run nests kindly on a slab, and every return costs yield. Nothing is drawn square that the carcass did not build square. Supply-only material is £110 to £550 per square metre, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted separately rather than rolled in.

What needs to be ready before you come to Well Hall?

A window board sitting below finished worktop height leaves two choices, drop the top under it or notch the stone around it, and both cost more than a straight run. A lobby wall that leans shows itself along the back return, so that edge is cut to the line the wall actually takes. The template is taken to the carcass as built. Confirm whether the reception is at ground level or up the stair, and send the carcass drawing with the chimney breast and any bay recorded on it. Where someone is living in the house through the work, the strip-out and the fit are planned so the kitchen is out of use for a day and not a week. The same split runs through commercial property: a landlord fitting out a shell and a tenant fitting out their own reception want different things from one counter. A desk in a re-let space is specified for the next occupier too.

Is a drainer groove worth it in a small Well Hall kitchen?

They are cut with a fall towards the bowl, which is why they cannot be added on site later. Grooves are machined into the surface rather than applied to it, so there is nothing to come loose later. A groove set needs a clear stretch of worktop beside the bowl, so it competes with the run for length instead of being free surface. The old larder leaves behind a thick cold shelf and a vent brick through the outer wall, and both have to go before that wall reads flat. A reception counter answers to the building it stands in more than to the drawing, because it is fabricated to a carcass somebody else has already built and fixed. A counter is measured in the lobby it will stand in.

Does my sink have to be on site before you template in Well Hall?

Two bowls means two cut-outs and a bridge of stone between them, which decides where the sink can go. The tap hole is drilled in the workshop too, and its position depends on how far the tap has to swing. Nothing is cut out in the kitchen. Cutting a bowl on site is how worktops get cracked. Walls at both ends mean two scribes on every piece, and a run that has to drop between two fixed points has no tolerance left to give away. The return between the high counter and the low shelf never nests neatly, and it is what decides how much slab the desk swallows. The counter shape follows the queue first and the slab second.

Can a Well Hall worktop be done in one piece?

Slabs come in finite sizes, so a long run needs a join whatever the room looks like. Each join is an item on the drawing, so the layout and the figure move together. A join is glued and clamped flush on the day, so it is fixed rather than something to be undone. An aisle under a metre stops being a working space the moment two people are in it, and the depth of the tops either side is what decides whether that happens. An external corner on a counter is seen from both sides at once, so it is mitred rather than butted and the pattern is carried round it. A back-of-counter return is a separate piece with its own edges.

What if a worktop will not physically fit through the building?

A join added to get stone into the room is a different thing from a join added because the slab ran out, and the quote says which is which. A piece travels on edge, never flat, because on edge is how stone of that length carries its own weight. Where there is a lift, whether it can be booked out and padded matters as much as its size. Where the van stands level with the front of the house a piece gets handled twice instead of five times, and stone breaks on handling rather than on the road. The lower transaction shelf is short and easily handled; it is the upper counter that has to be walked in on edge and turned at every corner. Suction pads want a clean dry face, and lobby dust is not that.

We recently had the Arctic Starburst worktop installed by Worktop WorX and it looks amazing. The subtle sparkle really catches the light and gives the kitchen a clean, modern feel. The Arctic Starburst surface feels high quality, durable, and is easy to keep clean. The finish and installation from Worktop WorX were spot on. Really happy with the result and would definitely recommend both Arctic Starburst and Worktop WorX to anyone upgrading their kitchen.
