Stone bar tops in Welling

A bar top takes weight on its front edge all evening, so the overhang and what carries it matter more than the slab does.

The buildings and streets around Welling

1930s ribbon-development semiinterwar terracepostwar infillflats over shops

Stone bar top work in Welling tends to go wrong in the planning rather than in the fitting, and planning it properly means starting from the building. Long stretches of interwar semis behind the main road, kitchens roughly 2.4m by 3m at the rear with a side door to the alley; the typical job is a knock-through into the dining room, with a smaller number of full-width rear extensions carrying an island. Once the template is taken the figure stops moving. Everything before that is an estimate and is described as one.

The scullery and the kitchen were knocked into one at some point, and the stub of the old dividing wall is still there under the plaster. Height is the other half of it, since a bar sits above the working plane and the knee room beneath is measured from the face of the frame, not from the edge of the stone. The front edge takes the wear, so the front edge takes the detail.

The chimney breast in the corner has usually been left in place, so the run gains a return and two scribed ends. The side passage means a full length can generally reach the room whole, so the break count answers to the slab and to the frame rather than to the front door. Beer lines and a glasswasher change what goes under the top.

The building types here are 1930s ribbon-development semi, interwar terrace, postwar infill and flats over shops. Which one you have changes the order of the day more than the design does.

True everywhere

Stone bar tops, in short

  • Anything past about 300mm of unsupported overhang gets steel or a corbel underneath.
  • The front edge is the one people touch, so it is profiled and polished on all exposed faces.
  • Quartz is the usual choice indoors; porcelain and sintered stone where drinks and citrus are constant.
  • A bar top is fitted level to itself, not to the floor, because floors in older buildings rarely are.

The place

Why Welling is its own job

The reason we ask so much before quoting in Welling is that a worktop cannot be trimmed to fit a surprise. The main roads are bus-heavy with waiting restrictions, but the residential streets behind have drives and space; flats above the shopping parades are stair-only. The 1930s side door into the alley usually lands mid-run, either it gets blocked up or the worktop stops short of it. We do not quote Welling from a plan and a postcode. We come out, we measure, and then we price it.

The work

What bar tops involves

Material choice is part of it: quartz for most indoor bars, porcelain or sintered stone where citrus, wine and strong cleaning products land on the surface every day. We measure the frame before we measure the top, because a bar top is set level to itself and the frame is what it will be packed off. You end up with one firm answerable for the whole piece, support included, so there is no argument available about whether a sagging front edge is the stone or the joinery.

The job starts underneath. What the front edge is carried on gets settled before the slab, the colour or the profile is discussed at all. Waterfall ends are cut in sequence off the length beside them, so the pattern carries down the leg instead of restarting at the mitre. The open end of a knocked-through room is where these land, and being read from two sides doubles the finished edge on the same piece. Frame checked, steel in, stone down.

The money

What it costs in Welling

A bar is quoted as joinery and stone together, so the frame, the support and the top each appear on the sheet instead of being folded into a rate for the surface. An island is a yield question before it is a design one: it either comes out of the same slab as the perimeter or it needs a second. The stone is quoted at £110 to £550 per square metre supply only, and the labour is kept out of it deliberately, because a blended rate hides the lines you would otherwise question. The steel under the front edge is a line, not an assumption.

1930s and inter-war semis

The carry, and what it rules out

Carrying down a flight is not the easier direction, because the weight runs ahead of the crew and whoever is at the bottom has no way of stopping a slip. A top with a bonded apron on the front arrives deeper than a worktop and behaves like a beam, so there is no easing it round a turn at all. The nose is the corner that gets caught, so it travels padded.

1930s and inter-war semis

Welling in the housing figures

On these streets most of the stock dates from the building boom of the twenties and thirties. Rooms of that vintage are small, so the bar replaces a table rather than joining one, and the stool count comes off the floor space. The nose is supported for what leans on it, not for what stands on it.

What Welling asks for

Not a domestic job, so it is not ranked against the streets around it. Those streets generate worktop replacement, worktop installation and worktop templating. Same slabs, same saw, same installers.

Questions

Questions we get asked in Welling

If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.

Are you set up to work in Welling, or is it a subcontractor?

Yes. Welling is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are DA16. It is worked on our south east London run, along with the rest of Bexley. A dropped kerb wide enough for a car is not always wide enough for a long-wheelbase van, and the width of the crossing decides the rest. A bar fit runs longer than a worktop run, because the frame, the support and the stone are three stages and only the last of them is quick. Trestles outside beat balancing a top on a half-built frame. We come to the kitchen to template and again to fit, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.

What should I expect from bar tops in a Welling kitchen?

These kitchens have been retiled at least twice, and stripping the tiles takes the bottom band of plaster with them because the old laminate ran underneath rather than up to them. These bars nearly always land at the open end of a knocked-through kitchen and dining room, which means the piece is read from both sides and both sides get the same edge treatment rather than one being left as a cut face. The break sits over support and clear of every seat. Two alcove pieces will not swap over however similar they look, so they are marked left and right at the bench and stay that way to the van. A bar top is levelled to itself rather than to what it stands on, so the packing goes into the frame and the stools take up whatever the floor is doing. A sloping floor is a problem for the stools, not the top.

How would you get a worktop into a property in Welling?

A short run of external steps before the communal door means a piece is lifted twice before the staircase proper has even started. That matters more on a bar than on a run, because a join forced by the way in cannot be allowed to land in the unsupported part of the nose. Steel for the overhang is carried in and fixed before the stone. Where a car has to come off the drive first, it is worth knowing whose car it is and whether the keys are in the house on the morning. That has to cover more than the unload, since the corbels, the flat bar and the fixings all come off the van well before the top does. The offcut from a bar sink leaves in the van.

Is Welling really a bar tops area?

Not particularly, and it would be easy to pretend otherwise. What the research on this patch actually lists is worktop replacement, worktop installation and worktop templating. That is a point about the buildings round here, not about the job. The quoting, the cutting and the fitting are identical here to anywhere else we work. Extension kitchens are usually specified long before they are buildable, so the run lengths on the drawing and the run lengths in the room are different numbers. Where the same detail is repeating across several rooms the support gets standardised once and then cut to length, which is cheaper than drawing it each time. A bar in constant use is a maintenance decision as well. Extension work runs late far more often than it runs early, and the worktop is close to the last thing in, so the date agreed at the start is rarely the date that happens. Harder use and stronger cleaning products push the answer towards porcelain or sintered stone, because a resin-bound surface is the one that shows what has been left standing on it. One detail across several rooms keeps the fixings the same.

What moves the number on a quote around here?

Sockets set into the end panel keep the top clear, but they sit below the stone and are cut into the panel by the fitter rather than machined into the worktop. A bar laid over that is a second level rather than a wider one, so it wants a spine underneath it and a settled detail where the two heights meet. The overhang is drawn before the layout is signed off. The material band is £110 to £550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.

What state does a Welling kitchen have to be in before you template?

A chimney breast left in place splits a wall into two alcoves, and the two are rarely the same width and rarely parallel to each other. Where the nose has to be carried past something fixed the support moves rather than the stone, since a corbel landing in the knee space is worse than no corbel at all. What the bar wraps around is templated, never assumed square. Confirm the finished height you want and whether the bar is seen from both sides, and tell us who is building the frame and when it will be complete. Someone who expects to still be there in ten years asks different questions: how a honed finish marks, what a sealer does and does not do, and whether a chip by the sink can be repaired in place. Where the person choosing it is not the person who will lean on it, the seating height is set to a standard rather than to whoever happens to be standing in the room. Seating height is set to a person or to a standard, and stated.

When do I pay for a Welling worktop?

Nothing is payable until the template, and the template measures the room as it stands rather than estimating from a plan. Two kitchens the same length can be far apart, because material, edge and cut-outs move independently of size. The quote is written from the template drawing. Before that it works from what you have described. Alcove pieces get cut oversize on both scribe edges, with the true wall angles carried on the template drawing rather than assumed. Anything that puts a notch in a bar takes material out of the piece at the point people lean on it, so the notch and the support are drawn together or not at all. The support plan is drawn at the same time as the cut-out.

Does a stone worktop need sealing?

Quartz carries resin, so a hot pan wants a trivet, while granite and sintered stone will take one without complaint. Granite tells you when the seal wants topping up: water stops beading on the surface and starts darkening it instead. Day to day all three want soap and water; abrasive creams and scouring pads are what dull a polished surface. The original kitchen was a small rear room with a larder and a back door, and nearly all of them have since been opened into the dining room. The side passage is usually wide enough for a full length to reach the room, so piece length is decided by the slab and by what the frame will carry rather than by the front door. A breakfast counter on an end is still an overhang problem.

Do most Welling kitchens take upstands or full-height splashbacks?

An upstand is a slim strip that follows the worktop up the wall; a full-height splashback runs from the worktop to the underside of the wall units. If it is a decision for later, say so at the template: the match is a question about the batch. Stone up a wall is heavier than tile and bonded rather than hung, so the wall has to be sound. The outside walls are cavity and the party wall is solid brick, so fixings behave differently on the two long walls of the same room. A bar here usually appears at the open end of a knocked-through kitchen and dining room, where it is read from both sides and both sides have to be finished to the same standard. A bar built as furniture is templated as furniture.

Are drainer grooves cut on site or in the workshop?

Where there is no room for a separate drainer, grooves are usually what gets specified instead. Grooves and an undermounted bowl are usually specified together, since the grooves are run to the bowl edge. On a porous stone the grooved area is sealed with the rest, and it gets wet more than anything else. Internal walls are hollow clay block or stud rather than solid brick, so two points a metre apart on the same wall want two different fixings. A bar top put into a room like that is an overhang question first, because the nose has to carry people leaning on it long after the slab has stopped being interesting. Nothing about a bar top is designed around a wall.

We recently had the Arctic Starburst worktop installed by Worktop WorX and it looks amazing. The subtle sparkle really catches the light and gives the kitchen a clean, modern feel. The Arctic Starburst surface feels high quality, durable, and is easy to keep clean. The finish and installation from Worktop WorX were spot on. Really happy with the result and would definitely recommend both Arctic Starburst and Worktop WorX to anyone upgrading their kitchen.
