West Putney kitchens

What the kitchens here are actually like

Large Victorian villaEdwardian detached1930s semiConversion flat

These are the multi-piece jobs, where vein direction across a join matters as much as the join itself. No stone is ever cut from a plan, which is why the visit happens after the units are in and not before. The room as it is, to the millimetre.

Big detached and semi-detached houses on the hill with kitchens at lower-ground or rear-garden level, usually holding a 3m island plus a full-height larder wall and a separate utility. Many have been converted into two or three flats, each with a kitchen squeezed into a former bedroom.

Parking is permit-controlled and the roads are narrow with parked cars both sides. The gradient is the defining factor, driveways slope steeply, and moving a loaded trolley on a wet incline is a real hazard, so kit comes off the van at the top and goes down by hand. Sloping sites mean the ground-floor and garden-level rooms rarely share a datum, so set out from the finished floor in each room rather than assuming one worktop height throughout.

Arts and Crafts houses have deep eaves, low windows and inglenook recesses, so the kitchen has more corners and reveals than its floor area suggests. The island is templated for its overhang, its support and the position of the hob or sink within it, with sockets and any pop-up left where they will genuinely be. Two to three hours, once the units are in.

The buildings themselves are mostly Large Victorian villa, Edwardian detached, 1930s semi and Conversion flat. Which of those you have decides most of what follows.

True everywhere

Worktop templating, in short

  • Two to three hours on site for a typical kitchen.
  • Units must be fitted, fixed and level first. No stone is ever cut from a plan.
  • Sink, tap and hob must be physically on site, not just ordered.
  • A Belfast or butler sink must be installed and at its final height.

Covered on our south west London run. Fitted 3–7 working days from template.

What gets asked for here

It is on the shortlist for this patch rather than at the top of it, because worktop design & quotation comes up more often. Nothing about the process differs between the two.

Getting stone into the room

The side passage is the measurement that matters, because a piece has to be carried flat down it and then turned in at the back door, and the turn is always tighter than the passage. A template taken without walking the route produces a drawing that cuts beautifully and will not go in. The template records it along with everything else.

Getting stone into a West Putney kitchen

The gradient is the defining factor, driveways slope steeply, and moving a loaded trolley on a wet incline is a real hazard, so kit comes off the van at the top and goes down by hand. Parking is permit-controlled and the roads are narrow with parked cars both sides.

Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Questions

Worktop templating in West Putney

If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.

Do you cover West Putney?

Yes. West Putney is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are SW15. It is worked on our south west London run, along with the rest of Wandsworth. Permit hours are what matters, not the permit itself, because a bay that frees up at six in the evening is no use for a template at ten. The templating visit needs somewhere to stop for two or three hours, which is a different problem from unloading for twenty minutes. It goes on the job sheet for the fitting crew. We template in your kitchen and fit in your kitchen, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.

Does the housing in West Putney change how worktop templating works?

Handmade brick and lime plaster move visibly along a run, and a straight-cut back edge shows it immediately. One datum for the whole room, because a floor that falls end to end shows as a step between island and perimeter. Recorded as it is, not as it was drawn. Sloping sites mean the ground-floor and garden-level rooms rarely share a datum, so set out from the finished floor in each room rather than assuming one worktop height throughout.

How does the stone actually reach a kitchen in West Putney?

The gradient is the defining factor, driveways slope steeply, and moving a loaded trolley on a wet incline is a real hazard, so kit comes off the van at the top and goes down by hand. Parking is permit-controlled and the roads are narrow with parked cars both sides. Rear access usually lets us fit longer pieces whole, so the join count ends up decided by the slab rather than by the building. The templater measures that route on the same visit, so the drawing leaves site already knowing the maximum piece. It goes on the drawing with the run dimensions.

Do you do much worktop templating around West Putney?

It is one of the three we do most here, behind worktop design & quotation. Same template visit, same workshop, same installers either way. In a converted house the flat entrance and the internal doorway are usually tighter than the communal stairs, and that is easy to overlook. The template visit is booked once the units are genuinely in, not when they are nearly in. The room as it is, not as it was drawn.

Why do two West Putney kitchens the same size price differently?

Seating overhangs past roughly 300mm will not carry on the carcass alone, so flat steel bar or a plywood substrate has to be built into the units first. A layout templated off one wall instead of one datum will not sit right once all the pieces are down together. The drawing leaves site complete. Material is £110-£550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.

What has to be finished before you can template?

Walls that bow along their length are the normal condition rather than the exception, and a straight-cut back edge will show a shadow gap at one end and touch at the other. The template plots it as it is, at the exact height the worktop will sit, and the drawing carries that through. Plotted, not estimated. All runs and the island carcass fixed down and levelled to one datum, with the sink, tap and hob on site - an island cannot be templated while it is still loose or sitting on packers. The householder is normally on site at template, and that is the right time to settle sink position, tap centres and overhang rather than agree them by email. The template happens when the units are in, fixed and level, whoever is fitting them. No stone is cut from a plan.
