Stone bar tops in White City

A bar top takes weight on its front edge all evening, so the overhang and what carries it matter more than the slab does.

Booking bar tops in White City without a site visit is how people end up with a worktop that fits the drawing and not the wall. Two extremes on the same postcode: 1930s estate flats with small closed kitchens of 2.0-2.6m and original ventilated larder recesses, and brand-new tower apartments with open-plan islands of 2.4-3m over a fixed services box. In the estate blocks the kitchen window is deep-set in a thick wall, so the worktop needs a generous scribe at the sill end. Bring us the problem rather than the diagnosis. Working out what you have got is the first thing we do.

The carry is the constraint: a single stair with tight half-landings, or deck access with a long walk from the lift. A bar top put into a room like that is an overhang question first, because the nose has to carry people leaning on it long after the slab has stopped being interesting. A home bar is joinery first and stone second.

A refuse chute or a service duct takes a corner of the kitchen in several of the standard plans, and neither of them moves. The carry up a stair or along a deck sets the piece length, and a short bar is one of the few tops that will make that turn whole. The break sits over support and clear of every seat.

Locally the mix runs to 1930s balcony-access estate block, postwar maisonette, 2010s-2020s high-rise apartment tower and former television studio conversion. Each of those behaves differently once the old top comes off.

True everywhere

Stone bar tops, in short

  • Anything past about 300mm of unsupported overhang gets steel or a corbel underneath.
  • The front edge is the one people touch, so it is profiled and polished on all exposed faces.
  • Quartz is the usual choice indoors; porcelain and sintered stone where drinks and citrus are constant.
  • A bar top is fitted level to itself, not to the floor, because floors in older buildings rarely are.

The place

Why White City is its own job

The practical side of a worktop in White City is settled long before anyone chooses a colour, and it is worth saying out loud. The older blocks are balcony access, which means the last leg is an open external walkway with a handrail on one side and front doors on the other - a slab on edge has to be walked, not wheeled, and wind on the upper decks is a genuine factor. New towers are the opposite: booked bay, goods lift, protection kit, and a security desk that will not let you past without a sign-in. On the 1930s decks the wind will catch a slab on edge above the third floor, so carry it flat to the door and stand it up inside. The workshop cuts to the template, not to the kitchen designer's drawing, because only one of those was taken in the room.

The work

What bar tops involves

The fitting workmanship carries the same five year guarantee as a kitchen worktop, and the support under the front edge is covered by it as much as the stone above is. On the day the frame is checked and packed, the support goes in, and the stone is set and sealed last, which is why a bar is booked as a day rather than as a delivery. You end up with one firm answerable for the whole piece, support included, so there is no argument available about whether a sagging front edge is the stone or the joinery.

The piece is open on the front, the ends and the underside, which is the reverse of a kitchen run that hides three of its four edges against something. Corbels are set out to the stool positions so that nobody has one arriving between their knees, and they are fixed to structure rather than to a lining board. Rooms are compact, so the counter takes the place of a table and is drawn for the stools the floor will genuinely clear. The projection is engineered, not hoped for.

The money

What it costs in White City

A bar top is priced from what holds it up as much as from the stone, because the steel, the corbels and the time spent fixing them are real lines rather than an allowance. The island is normally the largest single piece in the kitchen, which makes it the piece that sets the carry and sometimes the price. Material runs from £110 to £550 per square metre supply only, and the template, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines. Edge work is counted by the face, and a bar has more of them.

ex-local-authority flats and estates

The carry, and what it rules out

Underground loading has a height restriction, and a van with an A-frame on it is taller than the driver remembers. That has to cover more than the unload, since the corbels, the flat bar and the fixings all come off the van well before the top does. Nothing is rushed off a tail lift onto an unsupported nose.

White City in the housing figures

In this neighbourhood bay-fronted inter-war housing sets the pattern. The kitchens are compact, so the fixed lines outweigh the stone. Where the frame is site-built rather than a kitchen carcass, its plumb and its fixings are checked before the top is measured. Levelling happens in the frame, not under the slab.

What White City asks for

Nothing about the houses on this patch predicts how much of this we do, because it is not housing work. What the houses ask for is worktop replacement, worktop installation and worktop fabrication. The stone, the machining and the crew are the same.

Access

Getting stone into a White City kitchen

The older blocks are balcony access, which means the last leg is an open external walkway with a handrail on one side and front doors on the other - a slab on edge has to be walked, not wheeled, and wind on the upper decks is a genuine factor. New towers are the opposite: booked bay, goods lift, protection kit, and a security desk that will not let you past without a sign-in.

Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Questions

Questions we get asked in White City

If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.

Do you cover White City?

Yes. White City is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are W12. It is worked on our west London run, along with the rest of Hammersmith and Fulham. Where the bay sits some distance from the core, the carry across the car park is the longest leg of the day and gets boarded and lit. A bar fit runs longer than a worktop run, because the frame, the support and the stone are three stages and only the last of them is quick. Two trips to the van, one for hardware and one for stone. The measuring and the fitting are both done at the property, so there is nothing to visit or collect.

What is different about bar tops in White City?

A tower block runs one or two lifts for many floors, so a lift out of service postpones a job rather than making it harder. Rooms in this stock are compact, so a bar usually replaces a table rather than sitting alongside one, and it is drawn for two or three stools with enough floor left to get past them. A breakfast counter on an end is still an overhang problem. Old breasts carry a bulge low down where the original opening was closed up, and the units stand off it before the stone is measured at all. On a bar that counts twice over, because the same obstruction has to be cleared by the stone above it and by the knees of whoever is sitting at it. What the bar wraps around is templated, never assumed square.

Is access a problem in White City?

Once a long piece is in on the diagonal there is no room left for anyone else, so it travels up alone and is met on the landing above. That matters more on a bar than on a run, because a join forced by the way in cannot be allowed to land in the unsupported part of the nose. A bonded apron makes the piece deeper than the doorway expects. The goods lift has its own booking sheet, and a bay slot without a lift slot only gets the stone as far as the lobby. A trade bar is fitted around opening times, so the window the van has and the window the room has are rarely the same window. Trestles outside beat balancing a top on a half-built frame.

Do you get much bar tops work in White City?

Not especially, and pretending otherwise would be simple enough. What the research on this patch actually lists is worktop replacement, worktop installation and worktop fabrication. It is a fact about the local housing rather than about the work. The job is quoted, cut and fitted the same way wherever on the patch it lands. Where a family has been living around a building site for months, the finish date carries more weight than any other part of the specification. A bar is nearly always the last thing added to a project, so it is templated on a visit of its own once the joinery around it has stopped moving. One detail across several rooms keeps the fixings the same. An open-plan extension puts the worktop in the middle of the living space, so it is looked at from the sofa as well as worked on. Where the same detail is repeating across several rooms the support gets standardised once and then cut to length, which is cheaper than drawing it each time. The evening use is what the piece is sized for.

What makes one White City kitchen dearer than the next?

A pop-up socket in the surface is one more cut-out through the full thickness, and it wants the same clear space beneath it that a sink does. A bar laid over that is a second level rather than a wider one, so it wants a spine underneath it and a settled detail where the two heights meet. A bar top is a shape decision with steel attached to it. Material alone is £110 to £550 per square metre, and templating, fabrication and fitting are never folded into that figure.

What holds a template up more often than anything else?

Two alcove pieces will not swap over however similar they look, so they are marked left and right at the bench and stay that way to the van. A bar top is levelled to itself rather than to what it stands on, so the packing goes into the frame and the stools take up whatever the floor is doing. The support plan is drawn at the same time as the cut-out. Send a photograph of every corner of the room so we can see the boxings, the length you want, and how many stools you expect to use. Managed stock usually comes with its own rules about working hours, waste, and who is allowed on site. A home bar is discretionary work, so the edge profile, the corbel detail and the radius on the nose are worth settling properly rather than defaulting to whatever is quickest. Porcelain forgives the cleaning products a bar actually meets.

Is the quote a fixed price or an estimate?

What is quoted is what the drawing says, and the figure does not move unless the drawing does. The quote is written from the template drawing. Before that it works from what you have described. Cut-outs, edge profile and join count are itemised, so taking one out removes a line rather than starting an argument. A chimney breast left in place splits a wall into two alcoves, and the two are rarely the same width and rarely parallel to each other. Anything that puts a notch in a bar takes material out of the piece at the point people lean on it, so the notch and the support are drawn together or not at all. A bar top will not correct a frame that is out of true.

Do you cut drainer grooves on White City kitchens?

The alternative stands on the surface, so the choice is losing worktop permanently or only while you are draining. The bowl position has to be settled before templating, since the grooves are set out from it. Which side of the bowl they go is about how you stand at the sink, and it is settled before cutting. Windows sit high and the sill line crosses the middle of the run, which limits what can go above the worktop. None of that stops a bar being fitted level, but it does mean the top is set to a datum of its own and packed off the frame rather than followed down to the floor. The front edge takes the wear, so the front edge takes the detail.

Do you take the old worktop away?

An old stone top is heavier coming out than the new one is going in, and leaves in sections. The sink and hob are lifted out with the old top and kept aside if you are reusing them. Tiling bonded to the wall behind usually comes away with the old top, so that wall is agreed beforehand. A bay shared across a parade of shops turns over all day, so the arrival time matters more than the length of the booking does. Where the clock is running the frame is levelled and the steel is in before the top ever leaves the tail lift. The offcut from a bar sink leaves in the van.

What if the stone gets chipped on the way into a White City kitchen?

A piece is never laid flat across a gap while it is moved, because that is how stone cracks unaided. Floors and units are protected before anything comes through the door. Chips at an edge or a corner are the usual form, because that is where stone is least supported. Pieces get staged in the ground floor lobby and sent up singly, which needs somewhere to stand them where nobody will walk into them. The steel and the corbels travel that same route and go in first, so a bar is three separate carries into one room rather than a single delivery. The frame is built in the room; only the top has to travel.

Karem did a fantastic job at installing my antique bronze mirror for my coffee/drinks unit. He was really professional and his communication throughout was clear.

We recently had the Arctic Starburst worktop installed by Worktop WorX and it looks amazing. The subtle sparkle really catches the light and gives the kitchen a clean, modern feel. The Arctic Starburst surface feels high quality, durable, and is easy to keep clean. The finish and installation from Worktop WorX were spot on. Really happy with the result and would definitely recommend both Arctic Starburst and Worktop WorX to anyone upgrading their kitchen.
