Wood Green kitchens

What the kitchens here are actually like

Victorian terrace1930s block of flats2020s residential tower

Old plaster built up over decades makes the scribing heavy, and that time has to be in the plan rather than found on the day. Old top out in the morning, new stone down and sealed the same afternoon, with a plumber either side of us. Stone is far heavier than what is coming off.

Three types side by side - Victorian terraced back-kitchens, 1930s flats with a genuine separate kitchen room of about 2.5m by 2.2m, and new towers where the kitchen is a fitted run along one wall of the living space with a stone-look island the developer priced as an upgrade. The towers push a lot of like-for-like replacement work.

Tower blocks need a booked delivery slot and a residents' lift with a weight limit; some will only take deliveries through a basement car park with a 2.1m height restriction. The High Road and the shopping city dominate the centre, with servicing yards, timed access and no kerbside space.

These blocks were built with a lift from new, which will usually take a worktop and almost never takes a full-length island piece. The lift car is usually too short and too low to take a full-length piece flat or on edge, so stone either goes up the communal stairs with their half-landings and winders, or the run is designed with joins that suit the staircase rather than the kitchen. Units kept, surface changed, one day.

The mix here is Victorian terrace, 1930s block of flats and 2020s residential tower. A quote that ignores which one you have is guessing.

True everywhere

Worktop replacement, in short

  • The units stay. Only the surface changes.
  • Old tops come out in the morning, new stone is down and sealed the same day.
  • A plumber disconnects the tap and waste before we arrive and reconnects at the end of the day.
  • The carcasses have to be sound: stone is far heavier than laminate.

Covered on our north London run. Fitted 3–7 working days from template.

The shape of the run

Galley runs are usually short enough to come out of a single slab, so the material band you choose does more to the total than the room shape does. Going from a 38mm laminate to 20mm or 30mm stone drops the surface, which shows against tiles, a window board and any freestanding appliance. Height change is checked before we cut.

The building, and what it does to the job

Basement car park headroom is the killer here - a Luton will not get in, so slabs come off a smaller vehicle or get walked from the street.

What gets asked for here

This is the job the local stock asks for first, ahead of worktop installation and worktop templating.

Access

Getting stone into a Wood Green kitchen

The High Road and the shopping city dominate the centre, with servicing yards, timed access and no kerbside space. Tower blocks need a booked delivery slot and a residents' lift with a weight limit; some will only take deliveries through a basement car park with a 2.1m height restriction.

Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Questions

Worktop replacement in Wood Green

If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.

Do you cover Wood Green?

Yes. Wood Green is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are N22. It is worked on our north London run, along with the rest of Haringey. Bay bookings are usually an hour or two, which is fine for unloading and no use at all as a place to leave the van for a day. Waste is the part people forget: the old laminate or tired granite has to be walked back to the van and it does not get lighter. Old tops out and new stone in, both through the same gap. We template in your kitchen and fit in your kitchen, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.

Does the housing in Wood Green change how worktop replacement works?

These blocks were built with a lift from new, which will usually take a worktop and almost never takes a full-length island piece. The lift car is usually too short and too low to take a full-length piece flat or on edge, so stone either goes up the communal stairs with their half-landings and winders, or the run is designed with joins that suit the staircase rather than the kitchen. Sound carcasses are the one condition. Basement car park headroom is the killer here - a Luton will not get in, so slabs come off a smaller vehicle or get walked from the street.

How does the stone actually reach a kitchen in Wood Green?

The High Road and the shopping city dominate the centre, with servicing yards, timed access and no kerbside space. Tower blocks need a booked delivery slot and a residents' lift with a weight limit; some will only take deliveries through a basement car park with a 2.1m height restriction. Where the lift will not take the longest run we design a join in rather than gamble, because a piece that will not go up has to go back on the van. We plan the strip-out and the carry as one movement so the kitchen is only out of use for a single day. It sets what the day actually looks like.

Is Wood Green mostly worktop replacement work for you?

Yes. On the research for this patch it is the first of the three jobs listed, ahead of worktop installation and worktop templating. Where kitchens turn over between tenancies the priority is a surface that survives a decade of being treated as a chopping board. The carcasses have to be sound, because stone is several times the weight of what is coming off. A day, not a project. Quartz suits let property well: no sealing, no annual maintenance, and nothing an incoming tenant has to be told to look after. Old tops out in the morning, new stone down and sealed the same afternoon. A day, not a project.

Why do two Wood Green kitchens the same size price differently?

A galley puts the sink on one side and the hob on the other, which spreads the cut-outs across two pieces instead of weakening one. The existing layout is being kept, so the question is whether the old carcasses will take stone in that shape without more support. Carcasses have to be sound first. Material is £110-£550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.

What has to be finished before you can template?

A boxed soil stack or service riser in the corner of a run eats into the worktop depth and has to be scribed around rather than cut square. The old top has been hiding it, so the first honest look at it happens when the laminate comes off. Found at template, not on fit day. Get the managing agent's or freeholder's approval and the permitted hours confirmed beforehand, and agree with the porter who protects the communal carpet, stonework and lift. A street with houses in single occupation next to the same houses cut into flats produces two completely different jobs from the same elevation. If the carcasses are tired the honest answer is that stone will find that out, and it is better said before than after. Sound carcasses are the condition.
