Aldgate kitchens
What the kitchens here are actually like
The room is square, the walls are plumb and the floor is flat, so almost every complication in the job belongs to the building rather than the kitchen. The units stay and only the surface changes, so the job is a day, and what makes it a difficult day is the building. A single day, planned properly.
Newer towers on the eastern edge give standard developer kitchens - a 3-3.4m run against the riser plus an island of about 2m, with an induction hob and a recirculating extract that fixes the hob position.
Straight swaps onto existing carcases still need the carcase levels checked, because developer units settle and a 3m top will rock on units that were only shimmed once. Many of these are being upgraded from original laminate or composite to quartz within a few years of completion, so the job is a straight swap onto existing carcases. The Aldgate gyratory and its approaches are red route with no stopping, so everything goes through a basement service yard with a height barrier or a booked bay at the building entrance. Tower blocks run full contractor control - induction, insurance, permit to work, booked goods lift and a lift protection kit fitted before the first piece moves.
Boxed soil stacks and ventilation ducts run behind the units, and the boxing depth changes between floor level and worktop height. The work is all in the building, not the kitchen. Sound carcasses are the one condition.
On these streets the housing is modern residential tower, office to residential conversion, 1980s-90s apartment block and mixed-use development over retail. That mix is why two jobs on the same road can run completely differently.
True everywhere
Worktop replacement, in short
- The units stay. Only the surface changes.
- Old tops come out in the morning, new stone is down and sealed the same day.
- A plumber disconnects the tap and waste before we arrive and reconnects at the end of the day.
- The carcasses have to be sound: stone is far heavier than laminate.
Covered on our the City run. Fitted 3–7 working days from template.

What gets asked for here
Of everything we do around here, this is the one that comes up most, with worktop installation and worktop templating behind it.
Victorian and Edwardian terraces
The building, and what it does to the job
The kitchen is a small square room off a narrow entrance lobby, and the turn out of that lobby is the real limit on piece length. Plaster bonded straight onto concrete comes away with the bottom course of tiles, leaving a band behind the upstand. What is under the old top is the real question.

The shape of the run
The catch with a galley is that both runs are seen end-on from the doorway, so any difference in overhang between the two reads immediately. Old laminate has often been holding a run square for years, and taking it off shows what the units were really doing. Height change is checked before we cut.

Getting stone into a Aldgate kitchen
The Aldgate gyratory and its approaches are red route with no stopping, so everything goes through a basement service yard with a height barrier or a booked bay at the building entrance. Tower blocks run full contractor control - induction, insurance, permit to work, booked goods lift and a lift protection kit fitted before the first piece moves.
Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Questions
Worktop replacement in Aldgate
If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.
Do you actually work in Aldgate, or just list it?
Yes. Aldgate is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are EC3N, EC3A. It is worked on our the City run, along with the rest of the Square Mile. A dedicated loading bay or service yard is the easiest arrangement in a managed building, provided the slot is booked and someone has the key to the shutter. A replacement is a two-way job, with old tops going out and new stone coming in, so the van needs to stay put across the whole day. Old tops out and new stone in, both through the same gap. We template in your kitchen and fit in your kitchen, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.
What is different about worktop replacement in Aldgate?
Boxed soil stacks and ventilation ducts run behind the units, and the boxing depth changes between floor level and worktop height. Housings set out for a 38mm laminate change clearance when you drop to 20mm or 30mm stone, and that is checked before cutting. Units kept, surface changed, one day. Straight swaps onto existing carcases still need the carcase levels checked, because developer units settle and a 3m top will rock on units that were only shimmed once.
Is access a problem in Aldgate?
The Aldgate gyratory and its approaches are red route with no stopping, so everything goes through a basement service yard with a height barrier or a booked bay at the building entrance. Tower blocks run full contractor control - induction, insurance, permit to work, booked goods lift and a lift protection kit fitted before the first piece moves. The lift has to be booked and blanketed before anything moves, and that booking needs to cover the old tops coming out as well as the new stone going in. We plan the strip-out and the carry as one movement so the kitchen is only out of use for a single day. That is agreed before a plumber is booked.
Is worktop replacement the job you do most in Aldgate?
Yes. On the research for this patch it is the first of the three jobs listed, ahead of worktop installation and worktop templating. Housings and integrated appliances are set out for a 38mm laminate top, so dropping to 20mm or 30mm stone changes the clearances and needs checking before anything is cut. The carcasses have to be sound, because stone is several times the weight of what is coming off. A day, not a project. Upgrading a builder-finish kitchen is mostly a swap, so the cost sits in the material choice rather than in the shape of the room. The units stay and only the surface changes, so the whole job is one day rather than a kitchen refit. A day, not a project.
What decides the price of a worktop in Aldgate?
The catch with a galley is that both runs are seen end-on from the doorway, so any difference in overhang between the two reads immediately. Old laminate has often been holding a run square for years, and taking it off shows what the units were really doing. Height change is checked before we cut. Material is £110-£550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.
What do I need to sort out first?
A notch around a boxed stack is machined with a radius at the internal corner, because a square inside corner there is exactly where a top will crack. This is the commonest reason a replacement turns out to need more than a straight swap. It is the usual surprise, and it is a known one. Book the service lift, loading bay and concierge access for the full day, and confirm the building's permitted working hours in writing. Where ownership is split across a building, the common parts belong to someone else and the carry route is negotiated rather than assumed. A replacement keeps the units and changes the surface, which is the least disruptive way to do this in an occupied property. Units kept, surface changed.
