Barons Court kitchens
What the kitchens here are actually like
Permitted working hours, a porter and a booked lift set a hard finish time on the day whatever stage the fit has reached. What decides between a slim upstand and full-height stone is nearly always the wall rather than the taste. Siliconed to the top, never grouted.
The garden-square mansion flats are laid out with the kitchen at the rear over a light well, small and tall, typically 2.2-2.8m of run with a high ceiling and original sash, and the boiler flue fixed on the outside wall.
Most work is like-for-like replacement in an unchanged layout, sometimes with the addition of a slim peninsula where an old servant's passage has been opened up. Old cage lifts here are for people, not stone - assume the stairs and plan a joint at the sink accordingly.
Permitted works hours are commonly weekdays with a late start and an early finish, so a one-day fit is planned around the porter and the lift. Each return needs its own piece with a mitred or butted external corner, and those pieces should come off the same slab so the movement lines up across the corner. Decided before fabrication starts.
On these streets the housing is 1890s-1900s red-brick mansion flats around garden squares, Victorian terrace, Edwardian terrace with front bay and conversion maisonette. The differences between them show up at template, not at enquiry.
True everywhere
Splashbacks and upstands, in short
- Cut from the same slab run as the worktop, at the same time.
- Ordered later, from a different batch, the match is not reliable where the pieces meet.
- Socket and switch positions must be final before templating.
- The joint to the worktop is siliconed, never grouted.
Covered on our west London run. Fitted 3–7 working days from template.

What gets asked for here
It is on the shortlist for this patch rather than at the top of it, because worktop replacement comes up more often. Nothing about the process differs between the two.
mansion blocks and purpose-built flats
Getting stone into the room
Purpose-built blocks with a communal front door, stone stairs and either no lift or a small original cage lift that is not rated for material loads. Streets around the squares are permit-only with narrow bays, and the squares themselves are private gardens so there is no vehicle route through - the carry is round the perimeter.
Without a bay the van ends up on a single yellow with a crew member watching it, which takes a pair of hands off the carry. Panels come off the van in one trip where possible, since a tall piece handled repeatedly is a piece asking to be chipped. Handling is where these pieces get damaged.

Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Questions
Worktop splashbacks & upstands in Barons Court
If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.
Is Barons Court on your patch?
Yes. Barons Court is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are W14. It is worked on our west London run, along with the rest of Hammersmith and Fulham. Without a bay the van ends up on a single yellow with a crew member watching it, which takes a pair of hands off the carry. Panels come off the van in one trip where possible, since a tall piece handled repeatedly is a piece asking to be chipped. Handling is where these pieces get damaged. We template in your kitchen and fit in your kitchen, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.
Why would worktop splashbacks & upstands in Barons Court be any different from anywhere else?
Permitted works hours are commonly weekdays with a late start and an early finish, so a one-day fit is planned around the porter and the lift. Boxed risers break the run into returns, and every return is a separate piece with its own mitred corner. The wall makes that decision, not the brochure. Old cage lifts here are for people, not stone - assume the stairs and plan a joint at the sink accordingly.
How would you get a worktop into a property in Barons Court?
Purpose-built blocks with a communal front door, stone stairs and either no lift or a small original cage lift that is not rated for material loads. Streets around the squares are permit-only with narrow bays, and the squares themselves are private gardens so there is no vehicle route through - the carry is round the perimeter. Stone goes up on edge, and it is the half-landing turn rather than the flight itself that sets the maximum piece. Splashback panels are lighter than a worktop and far more awkward, because a tall thin piece has to be carried on edge and cannot be tilted to clear a turn. Joint positions follow from that.
Is worktop splashbacks & upstands common in Barons Court?
It is one of the three we do most here, behind worktop replacement. Same template visit, same workshop, same installers either way. Where kitchens turn over between tenancies the priority is a surface that survives a decade of being treated as a chopping board. Ordered later from a different batch, the match is not reliable exactly where the pieces meet. Same batch, same run, same day. Landlord work is scheduled around void periods, so the whole thing is a fixed window and the template date matters as much as the fitting date. Socket and switch positions have to be final before templating, because a cut-out in the wrong place means a new piece. Sockets final before template.
What moves the number on a quote around here?
The free end is what needs deciding early: square edge, mitred apron down the end, or a full waterfall to the floor, and a waterfall is cut in sequence off the same part of the slab. Long runs almost never take a single panel, so the joint positions want agreeing before anything is templated. Joint placement is a decision, not an accident. Material is £110-£550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.
What needs to be ready before you come to Barons Court?
A notch around a boxed stack is machined with a radius at the internal corner, because a square inside corner there is exactly where a top will crack. A tall panel that fits at the worktop will stand off the wall at the top unless the wall is dubbed out or the panel is scribed. An upstand rides what a panel exposes. The riser boxing must be finished in its final form and any access panel positions agreed before the template, since the stone is set out around them. The same building type can arrive as a careful one-off kitchen or as a fast turnaround, and the honest answer is that they are priced differently. Full-height panels need the wall made good first, which is another trade and another timescale. The wall has to be ready.
