Belmont kitchens
What the kitchens here are actually like
A side passage and a back door mean the stone rarely has to come through the house, which changes the job more than most people expect. What decides between a slim upstand and full-height stone is nearly always the wall rather than the taste. The wall decides, not the brochure.
Consistent interwar semis around the circle, mostly still with the kitchen and dining room as separate rooms, and the common upgrade is knocking those two together for a 3.6m run with a breakfast peninsula rather than building outwards. Original serving hatches turn up regularly and get closed off during the refit. Knock-through kitchens leave a stub of the old dividing wall, and that stub is almost never plumb, so template it rather than assume a straight line to the return.
A side alley and a back door mean most pieces go in whole, and it is the alley width rather than the front door that decides it. These kitchens are nearly always retiled at least twice, and stripping the old tiles takes the bottom course of plaster with it because the original laminate top ran underneath the tiles rather than up to them. The wall makes that decision, not the brochure.
What we are usually templating in is 1930s semi, 1930s parade with maisonettes and post-war infill housing. The differences between them show up at template, not at enquiry.
True everywhere
Splashbacks and upstands, in short
- Cut from the same slab run as the worktop, at the same time.
- Ordered later, from a different batch, the match is not reliable where the pieces meet.
- Socket and switch positions must be final before templating.
- The joint to the worktop is siliconed, never grouted.
Covered on our north west London run. Fitted 3–7 working days from template.
1930s and inter-war semis
Getting stone into the room
Quiet residential roads with drives and straightforward kerbside loading, plus maisonettes over the parade shops that need an external rear staircase and a careful turn at the top.
Even an easy kerbside carry wants the pavement clear at the tail lift, because a three-metre piece on edge has a swing radius nobody expects until it is swinging. Splashback panels are lighter than a worktop and far more awkward, because a tall thin piece has to be carried on edge and cannot be tilted to clear a turn. It decides panel size before anything is cut.

What gets asked for here
The research on this patch does not put this among the three commonest jobs. Worktop replacement, worktop installation and worktop templating do. That changes how often we are here, not how the work is done.

Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Questions
Worktop splashbacks & upstands in Belmont
If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.
Do you actually work in Belmont, or just list it?
Yes. Belmont is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are HA3. It is worked on our north west London run, along with the rest of Harrow. A front drive is the best thing that can happen to a fitting day, because the tail lift comes down within a few metres of the door and nothing is on a clock. Splashbacks are normally the last thing off, so a short parking window is exactly when they get rushed. Handling is where these pieces get damaged. We template in your kitchen and fit in your kitchen, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.
What is different about worktop splashbacks & upstands in Belmont?
The chimney breast in the corner has usually been left in place, so the run gains a return and two scribed ends. These kitchens are nearly always retiled at least twice, and stripping the old tiles takes the bottom course of plaster with it because the original laminate top ran underneath the tiles rather than up to them. The wall makes that decision, not the brochure. Knock-through kitchens leave a stub of the old dividing wall, and that stub is almost never plumb, so template it rather than assume a straight line to the return.
Is access a problem in Belmont?
Quiet residential roads with drives and straightforward kerbside loading, plus maisonettes over the parade shops that need an external rear staircase and a careful turn at the top. Even an easy kerbside carry wants the pavement clear at the tail lift, because a three-metre piece on edge has a swing radius nobody expects until it is swinging. It is usually the full-height panels rather than the tops that will not make the turn, and that only shows up when they arrive. Joint positions follow from that.
Is Belmont really a worktop splashbacks & upstands area?
Not particularly, and it would be easy to pretend otherwise. What the research on this patch actually lists is worktop replacement, worktop installation and worktop templating. That is a statement about the local housing rather than about the work. It is quoted, cut and fitted exactly the same way here as anywhere else on the patch. Extension kitchens are usually specified long before they are buildable, so the run lengths on the drawing and the run lengths in the room are different numbers. Socket and switch positions have to be final before templating, because a cut-out in the wrong place means a new piece. Same batch, same run, same day. Rear and side-return extensions are where the islands appear, and an island is the piece that decides whether one slab does the kitchen or two. Splashbacks and upstands are cut from the same slab run at the same time, which is the only way the batch actually matches. Siliconed to the worktop, never grouted.
What decides the price of a worktop in Belmont?
Peninsulas frequently land on a lightweight partition or on units that were never fixed down, and stone needs proper support under it before it goes on. Upstands follow the run exactly, so every internal and external corner is a separate mitred or butted piece. Joint placement is a decision, not an accident. Material is £110-£550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.
What do I need to sort out first?
A chimney breast left in place splits a wall into two alcoves, and the two are rarely the same width and rarely parallel to each other. Where the wall cannot be made good, setting the stone deliberately proud on a subframe with a shadow gap reads as a detail rather than a bad fit. Make the wall good first, or accept the detail. The old tiling must be off and the wall made good and dry before templating, not on fitting day. The householder is normally on site at template, and that is the right time to settle sink position, tap centres and overhang rather than agree them by email. Full-height panels need the wall made good first, which is another trade and another timescale. Decided before fabrication, not after.
