Croydon Town Centre kitchens

What the kitchens here are actually like

high-rise apartment toweroffice-to-residential conversion1960s blocknew-build development

The carry is the constraint: a single stair with tight half-landings, or deck access with a long walk from the lift. The workshop works to the template drawing and to the measured route, in that order. Proven on the bench, then loaded.

Almost entirely flats. Kitchens are compact open-plan corners of a living space, typically a 2.4-3m run with an integrated hob, a slim peninsula and no room for a separate utility. Office conversions often have very deep floorplates with the kitchen against an internal wall and no window at all.

Everything is scheduled around the building's delivery hours. In tower blocks the lift car dimension sets the maximum piece, and if the goods lift is out we are not carrying stone up twenty floors, so the fit gets rebooked rather than improvised.

Entry-phone access, a booked lift and a parking bay near the entrance all have to be arranged before a date is confirmed. Walls in the system-built blocks are concrete or panel and can bow noticeably over the length of a run, so the template picks up the real line and we cut the back edge to follow it rather than trimming on site with a grinder. The bench proves it before the van moves.

The stock behind these kitchens runs to high-rise apartment tower, office-to-residential conversion, 1960s block and new-build development. They are not interchangeable, and a worktop finds the differences quickly.

True everywhere

Worktop fabrication, in short

  • Slabs come in finite sizes, so a long run needs a join.
  • Joins sit over a cabinet gable, never spanning a gap or running through a cut-out.
  • A finished join is typically 2–3mm, colour-matched and sanded flush.
  • Your sink and hob are dry-fitted on the bench before dispatch.

Covered on our south London run. Fitted 3–7 working days from template.

What gets asked for here

The research on this patch does not put this among the three commonest jobs. Worktop replacement, worktop templating and worktop splashbacks & upstands do. That changes how often we are here, not how the work is done.

Getting stone into the room

Concierge desks, booked service lifts, loading bays with 30-minute limits and no parking anywhere near the entrance.

Piece length is set by the internal diagonal of the lift car, not by the length of the slab. So the nesting is worked to the measured route first and to the slab second. The drawing carries that decision through to the saw.

Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Questions

Worktop fabrication in Croydon Town Centre

If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.

Do you actually work in Croydon Town Centre, or just list it?

Yes. Croydon Town Centre is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are CR0. It is worked on our south London run, along with the rest of Croydon. A dedicated loading bay or service yard is the easiest arrangement in a managed building, provided the slot is booked and someone has the key to the shutter. Pieces are loaded in reverse fitting order so the first thing off the van is the first thing that goes down. It is decided in the yard, not at the kerb. We template in your kitchen and fit in your kitchen, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.

What is different about worktop fabrication in Croydon Town Centre?

A tower block runs one or two lifts for many floors, so a lift out of service postpones a job rather than making it harder. The kitchen is usually a small square or L-shaped room reached through a narrow entrance lobby and a standard internal doorway, so the limit on piece length is the turn out of the lobby, and short runs mean joins are often avoidable altogether if the layout is nested tightly. Settled on the drawing, cut once. In tower blocks the lift car dimension sets the maximum piece, and if the goods lift is out we are not carrying stone up twenty floors, so the fit gets rebooked rather than improvised.

Is access a problem in Croydon Town Centre?

Concierge desks, booked service lifts, loading bays with 30-minute limits and no parking anywhere near the entrance. Everything is scheduled around the building's delivery hours. Piece length is set by the internal diagonal of the lift car, not by the length of the slab. So the nesting is worked to the measured route first and to the slab second. The drawing carries that decision through to the saw.

Do you get much worktop fabrication work in Croydon Town Centre?

Not particularly, and it would be easy to pretend otherwise. What the research on this patch actually lists is worktop replacement, worktop templating and worktop splashbacks & upstands. That is a statement about the local housing rather than about the work. It is quoted, cut and fitted exactly the same way here as anywhere else on the patch. Extension kitchens are usually specified long before they are buildable, so the run lengths on the drawing and the run lengths in the room are different numbers. So the nesting is planned around it rather than around a standard kitchen. Same slab run, or it is not a match. Rear and side-return extensions are where the islands appear, and an island is the piece that decides whether one slab does the kitchen or two. Cutting several kitchens from different slabs and calling them matched is where firms get caught out. Nested for the job in front of us.

What decides the price of a worktop in Croydon Town Centre?

Peninsulas frequently land on a lightweight partition or on units that were never fixed down, and stone needs proper support under it before it goes on. Pieces are dry-assembled on the bench before dispatch so the corners are known to close before they leave the workshop. That is nested before any glass goes on the saw. Material is £110-£550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.

What do I need to sort out first?

A boxed soil stack or service riser in the corner of a run eats into the worktop depth and has to be scribed around rather than cut square. The template drawing carries the real geometry through to the saw, and the piece is machined to it rather than trimmed to it later. Radiused, polished, and clear of the joins. The stack boxing needs to be in its final form and the sink and hob on site before we machine, since a boxing that gets re-clad afterwards throws the notch out. Mixed ownership means the decision-maker is not always the person who lets us in, so it is worth being clear early about who signs the quote off. The workshop works from the approved drawing, so whoever signs it off is signing off the join positions too. The approved drawing is the instruction.
