Stone bar tops in Colliers Wood

A bar top takes weight on its front edge all evening, so the overhang and what carries it matter more than the slab does.

The buildings and streets around Colliers Wood

Over the years the bar tops we have done in Colliers Wood have followed a few recognisable patterns, and knowing which one you are in saves a great deal of argument later. Two distinct jobs sit side by side here. The riverside apartments off the Wandle came with developer-spec kitchens where owners swap the composite or laminate top for quartz and keep the layout, while the terraces behind the High Street get a modest rear extension with a single wall run and a small breakfast peninsula. Whatever is behind the doors, the sequence does not change: look, measure, draw, agree, cut, fit.

Developer carcasses are thin cam-lock chipboard, which is entirely adequate under laminate and wants bracing before stone. A bar top put into a room like that is an overhang question first, because the nose has to carry people leaning on it long after the slab has stopped being interesting. The seating side is the side the piece is drawn from.

The room is genuinely square and the units are plumb, so the visit is more about the building than about the kitchen. The carcasses are thin cam-lock boxes that will not take a leaning load on their own, so flat steel is let into them flush with the top of the frame before any stone goes on, rather than corbels being screwed to the front afterwards. A trade bar and a home bar are different pieces of work.

What we are cutting for, here, is Victorian terrace, 1930s semi, 2010s riverside apartment and Postwar tower block. The wall build-up is different in each, and the scribe follows the wall.

True everywhere

Stone bar tops, in short

  • Anything past about 300mm of unsupported overhang gets steel or a corbel underneath.
  • The front edge is the one people touch, so it is profiled and polished on all exposed faces.
  • Quartz is the usual choice indoors; porcelain and sintered stone where drinks and citrus are constant.
  • A bar top is fitted level to itself, not to the floor, because floors in older buildings rarely are.

The place

Why Colliers Wood is its own job

A worktop that fits in Colliers Wood is the result of what was noticed at the survey, not of what was hoped for afterwards. The new blocks have loading bays and a goods lift but both need booking with the concierge and there is a hard time limit on the bay. The older terraces sit on streets that back onto the river and industrial units, so vans get boxed in by delivery traffic on the A24. Developer kitchens here are built to a tight 600mm module with the sink already cut into a fixed position, so measure the existing cutouts before quoting a straight swap. The template is where the room stops being a drawing and starts being measurements, and the price follows the measurements.

The work

What bar tops involves

It suits a home bar in a converted cellar or a lounge, a breakfast counter on the end of a run, and a working trade bar with a sink and a drip tray underneath. The top is machined at the works with the front edge, the ends and the underside all profiled and polished, since every one of those faces is at eye level from a stool. You end up with knee room somebody can genuinely sit in, since the support was set out to the stool positions rather than screwed on wherever it was convenient.

Fitting a bar runs in three stages. The frame is checked and packed level, the support for the projection goes in, and only then does any stone come off the van. Corbels are set out to the stool positions so that nobody has one arriving between their knees, and they are fixed to structure rather than to a lining board. Everything comes up in the lift, so the piece is sized to the car and any break is put where nobody sits. Frame checked, steel in, stone down.

The money

What it costs in Colliers Wood

Two counters of the same length price very differently depending on how far the front edge reaches, because past a certain point the carcass stops carrying it and steel starts. Two facing runs mean two sets of edges and two scribes in a small span, which is why a compact galley rarely prices as cheaply as its area suggests. The stone itself is £110 to £550 per square metre supply only; everything done to it is priced separately and shown separately. Nothing about the support is folded into the stone rate.

Colliers Wood in the housing figures

Locally the bands run low by London standards. Where the same detail repeats across several rooms the support is standardised once and cut to length afterwards. No cut edge is left on show anywhere.

What Colliers Wood asks for

This is commercial work rather than something the housing here generates. Domestically these streets ask for worktop replacement, worktop templating and worktop splashbacks & upstands. It runs through the same template, the same bench and the same fitters.

Victorian and Edwardian terraces

The building, and what it does to the job

Boxing built in plasterboard on a light frame will take no useful fixing, so nothing bears on it and the stone is carried off the carcasses either side. On a bar that counts twice over, because the same obstruction has to be cleared by the stone above it and by the knees of whoever is sitting at it. The riser is boxed to a line the stone can follow.

Access

Getting stone into a Colliers Wood kitchen

The new blocks have loading bays and a goods lift but both need booking with the concierge and there is a hard time limit on the bay. The older terraces sit on streets that back onto the river and industrial units, so vans get boxed in by delivery traffic on the A24.

Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Questions

Questions we get asked in Colliers Wood

If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.

Which postcodes do you cover around Colliers Wood?

Yes. Colliers Wood is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are SW19, CR4. It is worked on our south west London run, along with the rest of Merton. Time-limited bays are camera-enforced across a lot of managed estates, so the unload runs to the clock and the van moves off afterwards. That has to cover more than the unload, since the corbels, the flat bar and the fixings all come off the van well before the top does. The nose stays wrapped until the frame is ready for it. We template in your kitchen and fit in your kitchen, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.

Why would bar tops in Colliers Wood be any different from anywhere else?

Piece size is set by the lift car and the entrance dogleg, which routinely turns a two-piece kitchen into a three-piece one. What is called a bar in a flat like this is usually the end of a peninsula with stools pushed under it, and the projection was drawn on the layout long before anybody worked out what would carry it. The back of a freestanding bar is finished like the front. A stack boxed diagonally across a corner leaves a triangle of dead space, and the top is cut to that triangle rather than to a square return. A bar top is levelled to itself rather than to what it stands on, so the packing goes into the frame and the stools take up whatever the floor is doing. Steel spans what a carcass cannot.

What is the carry like in Colliers Wood?

A car that answers every floor button pressed while a piece is standing in it needs to be held on the key, and the key usually lives at a desk that wants notice. That matters more on a bar than on a run, because a join forced by the way in cannot be allowed to land in the unsupported part of the nose. Nothing is leaned on a stud wall while it waits to be fitted. A dedicated loading bay or service yard is the easiest arrangement in a managed building, provided the slot is booked and someone has the key to the shutter. A trade bar is fitted around opening times, so the window the van has and the window the room has are rarely the same window. Fitting a bar top is slower than carrying one.

Would you call Colliers Wood a bar tops area?

Not to any real extent, and it would be easy to imply it was. What the research on this patch actually lists is worktop replacement, worktop templating and worktop splashbacks & upstands. It describes the kitchens on this patch, not the work that goes into them. Same quoting, same cutting, same fitting as anywhere else on the patch. Housings and integrated appliances are set out for a 38mm laminate top, so dropping to 20mm or 30mm stone changes the clearances and needs checking before anything is cut. A bar is nearly always the last thing added to a project, so it is templated on a visit of its own once the joinery around it has stopped moving. A late bar is a separate visit and the quote says so. Upgrading a builder-finish kitchen is mostly a swap, so the cost sits in the material choice rather than in the shape of the room. Where the same detail is repeating across several rooms the support gets standardised once and then cut to length, which is cheaper than drawing it each time. Nothing is assumed about a frame somebody else built.

Where does the money go on a Colliers Wood worktop?

Galley runs are usually short enough to come out of a single slab, so the material band you choose does more to the total than the room shape does. A bar laid over that is a second level rather than a wider one, so it wants a spine underneath it and a settled detail where the two heights meet. The nose line is drawn first and everything works back from it. Material is £110-£550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.

What needs to be ready before you come to Colliers Wood?

Where the boxing stands proud of the finished wall the upstand behind it has to be broken into separate lengths, because one piece cannot pass it. Where the nose has to be carried past something fixed the support moves rather than the stone, since a corbel landing in the knee space is worse than no corbel at all. A bar top is set to one datum along its own length. Send the peninsula dimensions including how far the top is meant to project, the stool count, and the internal dimensions of the service lift. Because the money comes out of a household rather than a maintenance budget, phasing is common: tops now, island or splashbacks later, quoted so the second visit still matches the first. A home bar is discretionary work, so the edge profile, the corbel detail and the radius on the nose are worth settling properly rather than defaulting to whatever is quickest. Who signs off the steel is settled before it is ordered.

Is templating a separate visit from fitting?

The template produces a drawing, and the workshop cuts to that drawing once you agree it. A template on a normal kitchen takes two to three hours in the room. Templating and fitting are two visits, not one, and the gap between them is when the stone is actually cut. Everything arrives through one controlled entrance with a booking sheet, and a delivery that misses its slot waits. None of that stops a bar being fitted level, but it does mean the top is set to a datum of its own and packed off the frame rather than followed down to the floor. A bar top is fitted last and touched first.

Can the price change after templating?

The quote is written from the template drawing. Before that it works from what you have described. Plumbing, gas and electrical work are not in the figure, because we do not do them. Ask for the lines rather than the total. One number for a kitchen tells you nothing you can check. A boxed soil stack or service riser in the corner of a run eats into the worktop depth and has to be scribed around rather than cut square. Anything that puts a notch in a bar takes material out of the piece at the point people lean on it, so the notch and the support are drawn together or not at all. The frame is made true before the stone is measured.

Is taking the old top off part of the job?

On a replacement the old top comes off in the morning and the new stone is down and sealed the same day. Old laminate is light and awkward rather than heavy, so it is usually the easier half of the day. Disposal means it goes in the van, not into the garden to wait for a collection. Bay bookings are usually an hour or two, which is fine for unloading and no use at all as a place to leave the van for a day. Where the clock is running the frame is levelled and the steel is in before the top ever leaves the tail lift. The frame is checked before anything comes off the van.

What if I have already sourced the slab?

Say what you have and where it came from before anything is booked, because thickness and batch decide what can be done with it. Sinks, taps and hobs are yours to buy in any case, and they only have to be in the room for the template. Stone cut to somebody else’s drawing cannot usefully be re-cut to yours. Handover-spec kitchens are square, plumb and predictable, which means the join count is honest and driven by run length rather than by the building. Harder use and stronger cleaning products push the answer towards porcelain or sintered stone, because a resin-bound surface is the one that shows what has been left standing on it. The overhang is checked against the frame that exists.
