Unrestricted kerbside is straightforward as long as the space in front of the property is actually clear when the van arrives. A van that has to move mid-fit costs the best part of an hour and takes a man off the tools to do it. The day is built around that window. Steel columns and downstands land where the frame put them, which is frequently in the middle of what would otherwise be a clean run. The goods lift is often industrial and generous, but the flat entrance and any internal turn into a mezzanine or split level can be tighter than anything in the building, so we walk the full route with a tape before unloading. Walked, measured, protected, then lifted. Ceilings are high and the units are open, so islands are exposed on all four sides and every edge and mitre is visible from across the room.

Access is off narrow industrial roads with working yards and gates that get locked outside hours, so a delivery slot has to be agreed with the building manager. Older converted units often have a wide roller shutter at ground level, which is the easiest slab entry anywhere in the borough, but the upper live-work floors are reached by an open industrial stair. Communal stairs get boarded and the handrail padded, and we walk the route with a tape before the first piece leaves the van. Finding it out on the morning costs the whole slot, because there is no second route to fall back on. It gets checked before the first piece is lifted.

It is one of the three we do most here, behind worktop fabrication. Same template visit, same workshop, same installers either way. The junction between the original room and the extension is the point to watch, because the two floors rarely sit at the same height. The fitting day is scheduled to suit that rather than to suit the diary. One visit, done properly. Rear and side-return extensions are where the islands appear, and an island is the piece that decides whether one slab does the kitchen or two. Where the window is fixed there is no second day to fall back on, so the prep list matters more than usual. The prep list is not optional.

If the island is a few hundred millimetres longer than the usable length of a slab, a second slab gets bought to gain that overhang, and the whole slab is paid for rather than the part used. On the day that means dry-laying the whole layout first and only then pulling and bonding the joins. Dry-lay first, always. Material is £110-£550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.

Exposed structure means the back edge is not a straight line at all, and a scribe of fifteen or twenty millimetres across a run is normal. The back edge is eased in progressively rather than offered up once and forced. Eased in, never forced. Confirm loading bay access and lift booking with the building's management, and clear any furniture from the mezzanine stairs or split-level approach. Access in a tenanted flat depends on the tenant, so the template and fitting dates are agreed with whoever actually holds the keys.
