Fulwell kitchens

What the kitchens here are actually like

1920s and 1930s semi1930s detachedpostwar infillmodern close

These kitchens have usually been retiled twice and knocked through once, and both of those leave marks the worktop has to deal with. Taking the old tops off is also the first honest look at what has been going on underneath them. Sound carcasses are the one condition.

Consistent interwar semis backing onto the golf course and playing fields, most with a rear kitchen extended by 2m to 3m to create a kitchen-diner with a 4m run down one side and a low breakfast bar rather than a full island.

Quiet, wide roads with driveways and garages, easy van access and space to open the tailgate on the plot; the level crossing at the station is the only regular hold-up. Extension floors here are usually a new slab butted to the old suspended floor, so expect a step and set the kitchen level off the units.

These kitchens have been retiled at least twice, and stripping the tiles takes the bottom band of plaster with them because the old laminate ran underneath rather than up to them. What catches people out is the junction between the old floor and the extension floor, which is rarely at the same level, so a run carrying across it needs the units packed before stone goes on. What is under the old top is the real question.

The mix here is 1920s and 1930s semi, 1930s detached, postwar infill and modern close. Which of those you have decides most of what follows.

True everywhere

Worktop replacement, in short

  • The units stay. Only the surface changes.
  • Old tops come out in the morning, new stone is down and sealed the same day.
  • A plumber disconnects the tap and waste before we arrive and reconnects at the end of the day.
  • The carcasses have to be sound: stone is far heavier than laminate.

1930s and inter-war semis

The shape of the run

Peninsulas frequently land on a lightweight partition or on units that were never fixed down, and stone needs proper support under it before it goes on. Old laminate has often been holding a run square for years, and taking it off shows what the units were really doing. Height change is checked before we cut.

What gets asked for here

The research on this patch does not put this among the three commonest jobs. Worktop installation, worktop design & quotation and worktop templating do. That changes how often we are here, not how the work is done.

Getting stone into a Fulwell kitchen

Quiet, wide roads with driveways and garages, easy van access and space to open the tailgate on the plot; the level crossing at the station is the only regular hold-up.

Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Questions

Worktop replacement in Fulwell

If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.

Do you actually work in Fulwell, or just list it?

Yes. Fulwell is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are TW2, TW11. It is worked on our south west London run, along with the rest of Richmond upon Thames. A front drive is the best thing that can happen to a fitting day, because the tail lift comes down within a few metres of the door and nothing is on a clock. A replacement is a two-way job, with old tops going out and new stone coming in, so the van needs to stay put across the whole day. Old tops out and new stone in, both through the same gap. We template in your kitchen and fit in your kitchen, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.

What is different about worktop replacement in Fulwell?

A side alley and a back door mean most pieces go in whole, and it is the alley width rather than the front door that decides it. The kitchen is normally the original back room with a later side-return or rear extension bolted on, and that helps us: most pieces can go down the side alley and in through the back door in one length, so we can avoid joins that a front-door route would force. Units kept, surface changed, one day. Extension floors here are usually a new slab butted to the old suspended floor, so expect a step and set the kitchen level off the units.

Is access a problem in Fulwell?

Quiet, wide roads with driveways and garages, easy van access and space to open the tailgate on the plot; the level crossing at the station is the only regular hold-up. The van gets close to the door and the stone comes off the tail lift onto a trolley, which is about the shortest carry we ever get. We plan the strip-out and the carry as one movement so the kitchen is only out of use for a single day. It sets what the day actually looks like.

Do you get much worktop replacement work in Fulwell?

Not particularly, and it would be easy to pretend otherwise. What the research on this patch actually lists is worktop installation, worktop design & quotation and worktop templating. That is a statement about the local housing rather than about the work. It is quoted, cut and fitted exactly the same way here as anywhere else on the patch. The junction between the original room and the extension is the point to watch, because the two floors rarely sit at the same height. The carcasses have to be sound, because stone is several times the weight of what is coming off. Sound carcasses or it does not go ahead. Extension kitchens are usually specified long before they are buildable, so the run lengths on the drawing and the run lengths in the room are different numbers. Old tops out in the morning, new stone down and sealed the same afternoon. A day, not a project.

What decides the price of a worktop in Fulwell?

Because a peninsula is seen from both sides, the underside of any overhang gets the same edge treatment as the top, which is easy to leave out of a spec. Old laminate has often been holding a run square for years, and taking it off shows what the units were really doing. The units stay, the surface changes. Material is £110-£550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.

What do I need to sort out first?

Legs bottoming out on hard concrete or an uneven screed mean the tops of the carcasses are not one plane, and that is picked up at template rather than on fitting day. We would rather find it at template than on the morning, which is why the templater looks behind the units. Found at template, not on fit day. Unlock the side gate and clear the alley of bins, bikes and pots, and arrange a plumber for the sink and an electrician if the hob is hard-wired. An owner living in the house makes the decisions and lives with them, so the specification tends to go towards the material rather than towards the lowest total. A replacement keeps the units and changes the surface, which is the least disruptive way to do this in an occupied property. Sound carcasses are the condition.
