Stone bar tops in Gidea Park

A bar top takes weight on its front edge all evening, so the overhang and what carries it matter more than the slab does.

Gidea Park kitchens

The buildings and streets around Gidea Park

1911 Romford Garden Suburb Arts and Crafts house1920s-1930s detachedinter-war semi

Two kitchens a street apart in Gidea Park can turn stone bar top work into two quite different pieces of work, which is why nothing is priced from the doorstep. The Garden Suburb houses are architecturally distinctive and largely conservation-protected, so kitchens are remodelled within the original service wing rather than blown out into big glazed boxes, and clients tend to want painted in-frame units with a warm-toned stone rather than anything stark. Beyond the suburb, the 1930s detached houses take conventional island layouts with runs of 3.5m or more. The tape measure decides it, not the description above, and not anything anybody says over the telephone.

These kitchens have usually been retiled twice and knocked through once, and both of those leave marks the worktop has to deal with. Every face of a bar is on show from a stool, so the front edge and the underside of the nose are profiled and polished rather than left as the saw finished them. The nose is designed before the colour is.

Deep timber window boards were fitted throughout and they stand proud of the plaster, so a top reaching the window meets a stepped edge rather than a flat one. The chimney breast that survived the knock-through often sets where the counter can start, and the piece is scribed to it rather than stopped short of it. A garage floor slopes and the frame takes that up.

On these streets the housing is 1911 Romford Garden Suburb Arts and Crafts house, 1920s-1930s detached and inter-war semi. The wall build-up is different in each, and the scribe follows the wall.

True everywhere

Stone bar tops, in short

  • Anything past about 300mm of unsupported overhang gets steel or a corbel underneath.
  • The front edge is the one people touch, so it is profiled and polished on all exposed faces.
  • Quartz is the usual choice indoors; porcelain and sintered stone where drinks and citrus are constant.
  • A bar top is fitted level to itself, not to the floor, because floors in older buildings rarely are.

The place

Why Gidea Park is its own job

Nothing about fitting stone in Gidea Park is guesswork on our part, because guesswork with a machined slab is expensive. Leafy roads with long front drives and mature planting, so the van gets on the plot but the carry from drive to door is longer than average and often over gravel. Original houses here have thick, irregular walls and out-of-square corners, so we template every wall run individually instead of assuming parallel sides. Have a look at the itemised quote and you can see what the building is costing and what the stone is costing.

The work

What bar tops involves

A stone bar top covers the surface and what carries it: the top itself, the edge profile on every face that shows, and the steel or corbels holding the projection up. Seating positions are marked at the survey, so any break in a long counter can be placed over support and clear of where somebody will actually sit. You end up with one firm answerable for the whole piece, support included, so there is no argument available about whether a sagging front edge is the stone or the joinery.

Bar work is joinery with a stone surface on it, and the joinery is the half that decides whether the surface behaves itself. Where the counter has two levels the spine between them is built first, and the two tops are drawn as a pair so the front edges stay parallel down the length. Garage conversions are common here and their floors fall away to the old door, so the frame is levelled before a tape goes across it. One visit, and the bar is usable that evening.

The money

What it costs in Gidea Park

The seating count drives the length, the length drives the break, and a break placed clear of every stool is what the piece is really being priced for. Overhangs, a waterfall end and seating all add machining, and an island is where those decisions cluster. Material runs from £110 to £550 per square metre supply only, and the template, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines. You see what the projection costs before agreeing to it.

What Gidea Park asks for

This is commercial work rather than something the housing here generates. Domestically these streets ask for worktop design & quotation, worktop templating and worktop fabrication. It runs through the same template, the same bench and the same fitters.

Gidea Park in the housing figures

Around Gidea Park, building from before 1919 is scarce, so the runs sit against walls made to a tighter tolerance. Older fabric means the bar stands as its own frame, because nothing behind it can be trusted to run true. Corbels chosen, not simply supplied.

period detached houses and villas

The carry, and what it rules out

A gate post set narrower than the opening looks generous from the road and stops a wide piece a metre in. A trade bar is fitted around opening times, so the window the van has and the window the room has are rarely the same window. A short unload is still a long fit on a bar.

Getting stone into a Gidea Park kitchen

Leafy roads with long front drives and mature planting, so the van gets on the plot but the carry from drive to door is longer than average and often over gravel.

Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Questions

Questions we get asked in Gidea Park

If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.

Are you set up to work in Gidea Park, or is it a subcontractor?

Yes. Gidea Park is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are RM2. It is worked on our east London run, along with the rest of Havering. Overhanging branches clear the roof of a car and catch the roof of a van, so the drive is looked at from the driver seat rather than from the doorstep. A bar fit runs longer than a worktop run, because the frame, the support and the stone are three stages and only the last of them is quick. Permits are sorted before a corbel is drilled. Everything that involves you happens in your kitchen, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.

Is there anything about Gidea Park buildings that catches bar tops out?

The hall is parquet or original boards in a good many of these, and it is the surface that takes the traffic for the whole of a fitting day. These bars nearly always land at the open end of a knocked-through kitchen and dining room, which means the piece is read from both sides and both sides get the same edge treatment rather than one being left as a cut face. Beer lines and a glasswasher change what goes under the top. A room can be out of square in both directions at once, so the wall that leans is also the wall that runs downhill, and one scribe cannot answer both. A bar top is levelled to itself rather than to what it stands on, so the packing goes into the frame and the stools take up whatever the floor is doing. Every obstruction under the top is a seating decision too.

What do you check about the route into a Gidea Park property?

A short hard approach with no steps means a full-length piece can be walked in flat by two people rather than turned up on edge. The steel and the corbels travel that same route and go in first, so a bar is three separate carries into one room rather than a single delivery. Stools and back shelving come in after the stone is down. On a drive that only takes one vehicle nose-in, the van has to reverse the whole length of it to get back out, which decides which way it goes in. That has to cover more than the unload, since the corbels, the flat bar and the fixings all come off the van well before the top does. The nose stays wrapped until the frame is ready for it.

Does Gidea Park actually ask for bar tops?

Not to any real extent, and it would be easy to imply it was. What the research on this patch actually lists is worktop design & quotation, worktop templating and worktop fabrication. It describes the kitchens on this patch, not the work that goes into them. Same quoting, same cutting, same fitting as anywhere else on the patch. Extension budgets are usually well spent by the time the worktop is ordered, which is where the choice between quartz and a thinner sintered stone actually gets made. A bar is nearly always the last thing added to a project, so it is templated on a visit of its own once the joinery around it has stopped moving. The overhang is checked against the frame that exists. Rear and side-return extensions are where the islands appear, and an island is the piece that decides whether one slab does the kitchen or two. Harder use and stronger cleaning products push the answer towards porcelain or sintered stone, because a resin-bound surface is the one that shows what has been left standing on it. A bar in constant use is a maintenance decision as well.

Why do two Gidea Park kitchens the same size price differently?

An island is a single visible piece with four finished edges and no wall to hide against, so it is the piece the whole kitchen is judged on. Where the counter runs flush with the working surface instead of standing above it the whole thing becomes one plane, which looks better and doubles the unsupported span. A foot rail is planned with the frame, not bolted on later. Material sits between £110 and £550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted line by line.

What has to be finished before you can template?

Plaster thickness varies over the height of a wall, so the line at worktop height is not the line at skirting level, and the units decide which one matters. Where the nose has to be carried past something fixed the support moves rather than the stone, since a corbel landing in the knee space is worse than no corbel at all. The riser is boxed to a line the stone can follow. Confirm the finished height you want and whether the bar is seen from both sides, and tell us who is building the frame and when it will be complete. Owner-occupied kitchens are usually being done once, which is why the edge profile, the vein direction and where a join falls are worth the conversation. A home bar is discretionary work, so the edge profile, the corbel detail and the radius on the nose are worth settling properly rather than defaulting to whatever is quickest. What stays with the building is built to stay.

What happens when the route into a Gidea Park kitchen is tighter than the worktop?

The alternative to a join is a shorter run, which is usually the wrong thing to trade away. An external stair, a side return or a rear garden counts as carry and is measured the same way. The lift, if there is one, is measured on the diagonal, because that is the dimension a long piece actually uses. Where the van stands level with the front of the house a piece gets handled twice instead of five times, and stone breaks on handling rather than on the road. A top with a bonded apron on the front arrives deeper than a worktop and behaves like a beam, so there is no easing it round a turn at all. A bar top is heavier than it looks because the apron is solid.

Upstands or a full-height splashback?

What decides between them is usually the wall: what it is built of, how flat it is, and where the sockets ended up. It is quoted by area like the worktop, so a long run is a material line rather than a trim. Socket and switch positions have to be final before templating, because the openings are machined rather than chopped out on the wall. A detached house of this age has a drive, a side path and a back door, so access is rarely the constraint and the design can follow the room. The side passage is usually wide enough for a full length to reach the room, so piece length is decided by the slab and by what the frame will carry rather than by the front door. The break sits over support and clear of every seat.

Can a Gidea Park worktop be done in one piece?

Veining carries through a join where both pieces come off the same slab, which is decided at nesting. A join is glued and clamped flush on the day, so it is fixed rather than something to be undone. Slabs come in finite sizes, so a long run needs a join whatever the room looks like. If the island is a few hundred millimetres longer than the usable length of a slab, a second slab gets bought to gain that overhang, and the whole slab is paid for rather than the part used. The seating side is the part that decides the piece, because a stool at the open end puts a load on a corner that a wall would otherwise have been carrying. What the shape gives in length it takes back in support.

The floor in my Gidea Park kitchen slopes. Does that matter?

Level is checked at the template, which is the point of measuring in the room rather than off a drawing. A long top on units that were shimmed once and never checked is the commonest version of this, and it is cheap to fix beforehand. Small variation is taken up by packing under the top on the fitting day. Two walls each a degree out give an internal corner two degrees out, and the whole of that error lands in the mitre. Anything that puts a notch in a bar takes material out of the piece at the point people lean on it, so the notch and the support are drawn together or not at all. Steel spans what a carcass cannot.

I used Karem’s services 5 years ago for purchasing and fitting the quartz worktop in my then brand new kitchen. The price was reasonable and the service reliable and spot on, no delays in fitting, misunderstanding or excuses. I recommended him to a friend, who also used his services and they were happy too! If I need to order new kitchen work top again, I would definitely use him again. Thanks Karem!
