Greenford Green kitchens

What the kitchens here are actually like

Interwar semi1930s terracepostwar infill

Two runs and a return into a rear extension is the pattern, and the return is the piece that never nests neatly on a slab. Almost everything that makes a fitting day hard is a property of the building rather than of the stone. One visit, our own installers.

Interwar semis and terraces north of the A40, mostly unextended, with straight runs of 3m to 3.5m, the boiler still mounted on the kitchen wall and the back door in the corner.

Quiet estate roads with drives and verges, approached off Greenford Road.

The back door frequently opens straight into the kitchen, which is the best carry route in the house and the one people forget to mention. The fitting itself is slower than the carry: original plaster on the party wall and around the old chimney breast is rarely square to the run, so back scribes get cut on site, and where a return wraps into a breast recess we template that shoulder tight and ease it in. That is the shape of the day.

The buildings themselves are mostly Interwar semi, 1930s terrace and postwar infill. Which of those you have decides most of what follows.

True everywhere

Worktop installation, in short

  • One visit. A straightforward run is a morning; an island and splashbacks take most of the day.
  • Every piece is carried in by hand, and stone does not bend.
  • We seat and seal the sink and hob. We do not connect water, waste, gas or electrics.
  • Floors and units are protected before anything comes through the door.

Covered on our west London run. Fitted 3–7 working days from template.

1930s and inter-war semis

What gets asked for here

It is on the shortlist for this patch rather than at the top of it, because worktop replacement comes up more often. Nothing about the process differs between the two.

1930s and inter-war semis

The building, and what it does to the job

Wall-hung boilers directly above the worktop mean the upstand has to stop short and the splashback gets cut around the pipe run rather than behind it.

1930s and inter-war semis

Getting stone into the room

The A40 slip roads are the pinch point at either end of the day.

Off-street parking means the van stays put all day, so tools, packers and the offcut we would rather have than not are all within reach. We aim for the first slot of the day where parking is tight, because that is when the street is emptiest. It is why the arrival time is what it is.

True everywhere, stated once

Installation is the day the templating either pays off or does not. Almost everything that makes it hard is a property of the building rather than the stone.

Getting stone into a Greenford Green kitchen

Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Questions

Worktop installation in Greenford Green

If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.

Do you actually work in Greenford Green, or just list it?

Yes. Greenford Green is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are UB6. It is worked on our west London run, along with the rest of Ealing. A drive that shelves towards the house needs the van chocked and the trolley controlled, since a loaded A-frame gathers speed quickly on a slope. The fitting slot is set around it, which is why we ask about it when the date is booked and not before we leave the yard. It is why the arrival time is what it is. We template in your kitchen and fit in your kitchen, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.

What is different about worktop installation in Greenford Green?

The back door frequently opens straight into the kitchen, which is the best carry route in the house and the one people forget to mention. The fitting itself is slower than the carry: original plaster on the party wall and around the old chimney breast is rarely square to the run, so back scribes get cut on site, and where a return wraps into a breast recess we template that shoulder tight and ease it in. Walked, measured, protected, then lifted. Wall-hung boilers directly above the worktop mean the upstand has to stop short and the splashback gets cut around the pipe run rather than behind it.

Is access a problem in Greenford Green?

Quiet estate roads with drives and verges, approached off Greenford Road. The A40 slip roads are the pinch point at either end of the day. Even an easy kerbside carry wants the pavement clear at the tail lift, because a three-metre piece on edge has a swing radius nobody expects until it is swinging. The fitting day is planned backwards from that point, before anything comes off the van. It gets checked before the first piece is lifted.

Do you do much worktop installation around Greenford Green?

It is one of the three we do most here, behind worktop replacement. Same template visit, same workshop, same installers either way. Rear and side-return extensions are where the islands appear, and an island is the piece that decides whether one slab does the kitchen or two. Where the window is fixed there is no second day to fall back on, so the prep list matters more than usual. One visit, done properly. A new extension slab is not automatically level, and that wants checking before templating rather than after the stone is cut. One visit, with the sink and hob seated and sealed before we leave. Sealed before we leave.

What decides the price of a worktop in Greenford Green?

Galley runs are usually short enough to come out of a single slab, so the material band you choose does more to the total than the room shape does. On the day that means dry-laying the whole layout first and only then pulling and bonding the joins. Nothing is bonded until the whole run sits flat. Material is £110-£550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.

What do I need to sort out first?

A notch around a boxed stack is machined with a radius at the internal corner, because a square inside corner there is exactly where a top will crack. On the day it means dry-laying, marking, and cutting the scribe on site before anything is bonded. Dry-lay, mark, cut, then bond. Unlock and clear the side gate and back door, and move bins, planters and washing lines out of the alley run. The householder is normally on site at template, and that is the right time to settle sink position, tap centres and overhang rather than agree them by email. The fitting day is arranged with whoever can actually give us access for the whole slot. Protection goes down first.
