Greenford kitchens

The buildings and streets around Greenford

1930s Metroland semipostwar estate house1960s blockindustrial-fringe new-build

Anyone who has already replaced a kitchen in Greenford will tell you that reception counter work is decided by the room long before anyone opens a colour chart. 1930s semis with the original kitchen and larder opened into the dining room, giving a 4m to 5m L with a peninsula, and the attached garage frequently converted into a utility with a matching short run. Send through a photograph or two and the rough run length. We will tell you what you are probably dealing with.

The consumer unit and the meter often sit high on the wall at one end of the kitchen, and neither of them is going to move to suit a run of stone. The lower transaction shelf sits at the height a person in a wheelchair can be served at, and that height is fixed on the drawing before anything else about the desk is. Serving height comes off the standard, not off the sketch.

The consumer unit and the meter tails often sit in a cupboard in the corner of the kitchen, and that cupboard has to stay reachable whatever goes in around it. The carcass is built around a chimney breast or into a bay, so the counter is drawn to a shape the joiner had to invent rather than to a rectangle, and the return between the upper counter and the transaction shelf rarely nests neatly against the long piece. The building stays open, so the counter goes in after hours.

On these streets the housing is 1930s Metroland semi, postwar estate house, 1960s block and industrial-fringe new-build. Each of those puts the services somewhere else, and the cut-outs follow.

True everywhere

Reception counters and desks, in short

  • A counter on a joiner's carcass is templated after the carcass is in, not from the drawing.
  • The lower transaction shelf needs clear knee space beneath it, which decides where a leg or a gable can go.
  • Long runs are joined over a support, and the join is placed where the eye does not follow the counter.
  • Cable and card-reader apertures are cut in the workshop, not on site.

The place

Why Greenford is its own job

The reason we survey rather than work from a drawing is that a drawing tells you nothing about getting into a kitchen in Greenford. Western Avenue makes delivery easy and the residential roads are wide with drives. The Greenford roundabout and Ruislip Road are the congestion points. The gas run and meter box sit on the kitchen flank wall in these semis, so the units get packed off the wall and the top has to be templated to that packed line. Everything above is looked at on the free design visit, and none of it is charged for until the template.

The work

What reception counters involves

The order includes the machining nobody sees: apertures for cable, for a card reader and for a screen stem, each with a radiused internal corner and each cut at the works. Piece sizes are set from the way into the building before the slab is nested, so a join added for access still lands over a support instead of in open span. You end up with the building open the next morning, because the work was sequenced around the hours it was allowed rather than around a normal working day.

A reception counter is two working surfaces at two heights joined by a return, and the lower one exists so somebody in a wheelchair can be served at it. The return between the upper counter and the lower shelf is a machined piece with two finished edges, not an offcut cut to fill a gap. A practice converted out of a house has its reception in the front room, so the carcass is built around a chimney breast and the counter is drawn to it. The low shelf is a requirement, not a styling choice.

The money

What it costs in Greenford

A counter is priced by its pieces rather than by its frontage, because the two heights, the return and the knee recess are separate operations before they are one desk. Short lengths nest well and waste little, so the material line is usually the kindest part of a galley quote. Supply-only material sits between £110 and £550 per square metre, which is one input into the quote rather than the quote. Working at night is quoted as working at night, or not at all.

1930s and inter-war semis

What Greenford asks for

This is commercial work rather than something the housing here generates. Domestically these streets ask for worktop replacement, worktop installation and worktop templating. It runs through the same template, the same bench and the same fitters.

1930s and inter-war semis

Greenford in the housing figures

Around Greenford, much of the housing went up in the twenties and thirties. The kitchens are compact, so the fixed lines outweigh the stone. Whatever the desk stands against was put there by an earlier trade, so it is measured and not taken on trust. The carcass as built is the only dimension that counts.

1930s and inter-war semis

The carry, and what it rules out

Overhanging branches clear the roof of a car and catch the roof of a van, so the drive is looked at from the driver seat rather than from the doorstep. A reception fit is often booked outside opening hours precisely because that is when the kerb in front of the building is free. Where the bay is booked by the hour, pieces come off in fitting order.

Access

Getting stone into a Greenford kitchen

Western Avenue makes delivery easy and the residential roads are wide with drives. The Greenford roundabout and Ruislip Road are the congestion points.

Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Questions

Questions we get asked in Greenford

If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.

Do you cover Greenford?

Yes. Greenford is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are UB6. It is worked on our west London run, along with the rest of Ealing. On a drive that only takes one vehicle nose-in, the van has to reverse the whole length of it to get back out, which decides which way it goes in. A commercial frontage rarely has anywhere to stop, so the unload is timed rather than assumed and the counter pieces come off first. The transaction shelf can wait on the van; the counter cannot. Nothing needs visiting and nothing needs collecting: the template is in your kitchen and so is the fit.

Is there anything about Greenford buildings that catches reception counters out?

A radiator sits under the rear window on the outside wall, and moving it is plumbing that belongs before the template rather than after it. Practices in this stock are usually converted houses on or behind an interwar parade: a dental surgery, a veterinary practice or a small office with its reception in what was the front room. The building around the lobby decides the counter more than the brief does. An alcove is commonly wider at the back than at the front, so a piece cut to the opening drops in and then stands off the rear wall. A counter is worse off than a kitchen here, because it usually stands clear of the wall and has nothing behind it to hide a gap. A shadow gap solves what a scribe cannot.

What do you check about the route into a Greenford property?

A loading bay or a red route puts a clock on the unload, so the pieces come off in the order they will be fitted rather than the order they were loaded. A counter top is one long piece with no run of cabinets to break it, so the route decides the join count before the sightlines get a vote. Lobby floors are boarded before the first piece comes off the trolley. The distance from the standing to the actual kitchen door is the number that counts, since plenty of drives finish at a side gate and a garden path. Loading bays belonging to the building are booked by whoever holds the lease, and that is seldom whoever ordered the counter. Nothing is stood anywhere on a pavement it could be knocked from.

Is Greenford really a reception counters area?

Not to any real extent, and it would be easy to imply it was. What the research on this patch actually lists is worktop replacement, worktop installation and worktop templating. It describes the kitchens on this patch, not the work that goes into them. Same quoting, same cutting, same fitting as anywhere else on the patch. The junction between the original room and the extension is the point to watch, because the two floors rarely sit at the same height. Counters are nearly always one-offs, so the saving that comes from repeating a specification is not usually on the table here. One visit, because a lobby cannot be closed twice. Extension kitchens are usually specified long before they are buildable, so the run lengths on the drawing and the run lengths in the room are different numbers. Where an operator is fitting out several receptions, the counters come off one slab run so the desks read as a set rather than as neighbours. One counter, one drawing, and no second bite at it.

Why do two Greenford kitchens the same size price differently?

A galley closed at one end takes a short return across the top, and that little piece carries the same edge work, the same handling and nearly the same cost as a full length. A counter has the same argument in miniature: a straight run nests kindly on a slab, and every return costs yield. External corners on a counter are mitred, never butted. Stone is £110 to £550 per square metre supply only, and the templating, the fabrication and the fitting each carry their own line.

What has to be finished before you can template?

The face of a breast is rarely flat, and a top returning onto it picks up that bow across the last few hundred millimetres of its length. What a counter is scribed to is the joiner's carcass rather than the plaster, which is why it is templated after the carcass is fixed and never before. The knee recess is checked for square before the shelf is cut. Confirm whether the reception is at ground level or up the stair, and send the carcass drawing with the chimney breast and any bay recorded on it. An owner paying for this directly tends to want the reasoning as much as the number, so a quote that explains why a join sits where it does is worth more than a cheaper one that does not. The same split runs through commercial property: a landlord fitting out a shell and a tenant fitting out their own reception want different things from one counter. Approval in writing before a slab is committed to a desk.

What is the order of events on a Greenford kitchen?

The template is taken in your kitchen after the units are in and fixed, never before. Nothing is measured until the sink, the tap and the hob are in the room to measure against. The same firm templates and fits. Nobody else is brought in to install. The plaster is a thick float and set over brick that has blown in patches, so a wall sounds solid in one place and hollow a hand-span away. A reception counter answers to the building it stands in more than to the drawing, because it is fabricated to a carcass somebody else has already built and fixed. What the desk has to do decides what it is allowed to look like.

Do you take the old worktop away?

If you want the old top kept for a garage or a utility, say so and it stays on site. On a replacement the old top comes off in the morning and the new stone is down and sealed the same day. The units are untouched. Only the top of them changes. Deep gravel takes the wheels of a loaded trolley and holds them, so either boards go down or the pieces are carried. The upper counter is the longest piece on the van, so the tail lift needs the full swing radius clear on the pavement. A height barrier rules out the tail lift before it rules out anything else.

How many joins will a Greenford kitchen need?

Veining carries through a join where both pieces come off the same slab, which is decided at nesting. There are only ever a few legal positions, and the one taken is furthest from the light. Dark and heavily veined stone shows a join more than a pale even one, which is worth knowing before the slab is picked. Walls at both ends mean two scribes on every piece, and a run that has to drop between two fixed points has no tolerance left to give away. The return between the high counter and the low shelf never nests neatly, and it is what decides how much slab the desk swallows. The knee recess removes the leg the span was relying on.

Do you cut drainer grooves on Greenford kitchens?

Grooves are machined in the workshop at the same time as the bowl cut-out, because they cannot be done well in a kitchen. They are cut with a fall towards the bowl, which is why they cannot be added on site later. Grooves are machined into the surface rather than applied to it, so there is nothing to come loose later. The kitchen door opens inwards into the middle of a run, so the usable length of that wall stops well short of the corner. Two working surfaces at two heights, a return between them and clear knee space under the lower one: that is the shape almost every counter ends up being, whatever the front elevation promised. The lower shelf is there to be used, not to break up an elevation.

Kareem did the countertops dur8ng my kitchen remodel, and I was so impressed that I had him back to do the laundry room as well, which tells you everything you need to know. He is an absolute gem. Shows up when he says he will (which, let’s be honest, is rarer than it should be), does beautifully work, and clearly takes real pride in what he does. The countertops look fantastic, and he even went above and beyond, using leftover quartz to create an extra counter in my bathroom. Genius. He’s kind, professional, reasonably priced, and just gets on with it. No fuss, no drama, just a job very well done. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend him and will absolutely be using him again if the need arises. Happy to answer any questions.
