Greenhill kitchens

The buildings and streets around Greenhill

1930s flat above shops1960s office-to-residential conversion2010s-2020s town centre tower

The reception counters we do in Greenhill follow the same process every time, and it is the kitchen rather than the process that decides how the day actually goes. Town centre living: compact apartment kitchens, many in converted offices where the kitchen is a single wall of 2.4m to 3m against a service core with no window. Upgrades are cosmetic by necessity because the layout is locked, so tops, upstands and a new sink are the whole job. Send through a photograph or two and the rough run length. We will tell you what you are probably dealing with.

Developer carcasses are thin cam-lock chipboard, which is entirely adequate under laminate and wants bracing before stone. The lower transaction shelf sits at the height a person in a wheelchair can be served at, and that height is fixed on the drawing before anything else about the desk is. The lower shelf is there to be used, not to break up an elevation.

Floor to ceiling height is tight once the raised floor and the suspended ceiling are allowed for, so wall units sit close down onto the worktop. The lobby was finished to the developer's specification, so the counter has to sit against stone or terrazzo somebody else laid. A shopfront door caps the counter length before the slab does.

Locally the mix runs to 1930s flat above shops, 1960s office-to-residential conversion and 2010s-2020s town centre tower. What the units are screwed to varies between them, and that decides the fixings.

True everywhere

Reception counters and desks, in short

  • A counter on a joiner's carcass is templated after the carcass is in, not from the drawing.
  • The lower transaction shelf needs clear knee space beneath it, which decides where a leg or a gable can go.
  • Long runs are joined over a support, and the join is placed where the eye does not follow the counter.
  • Cable and card-reader apertures are cut in the workshop, not on site.

The place

Why Greenhill is its own job

In Greenhill, the things that make a fit straightforward or awkward are known before we cut, not discovered while we carry. Multi-storey and podium parking with height barriers, controlled loading bays with strict time limits, and goods lifts that need booking through building management. Station Road and College Road restrictions rule out casual kerbside unloading. Office conversions have shallow floor-to-ceiling zones and boxed services above the units, so measure the clearance for tilting a slab upright inside the room. Everything above is looked at on the free design visit, and none of it is charged for until the template.

The work

What reception counters involves

The lower serving surface is part of the same order rather than an extra, because a desk without one cannot serve a visitor who is seated. Piece sizes are set from the way into the building before the slab is nested, so a join added for access still lands over a support instead of in open span. You end up with the building open the next morning, because the work was sequenced around the hours it was allowed rather than around a normal working day.

A desk top is drawn from a template taken in the finished lobby, never from an architect's elevation. Overhang at the public face is checked against the carcass, and anything beyond what the joinery carries gets a steel flat or a plywood deck under it. A clinic fit-out in a ground-floor shell puts a card reader and a screen at the transaction shelf, and both apertures are machined before delivery. Templated to the carcass, not to the elevation.

The money

What it costs in Greenhill

The fitting line answers to the lobby and to the hours we are allowed in it, which is why a counter fitted at night costs more than the same counter fitted in the day. Short lengths nest well and waste little, so the material line is usually the kindest part of a galley quote. Across the catalogue the supply-only rate is £110 to £550 per square metre, before any of the work that turns a slab into a worktop. Working at night is quoted as working at night, or not at all.

The carry, and what it rules out

Bay bookings are usually an hour or two, which is fine for unloading and no use at all as a place to leave the van for a day. Where the van cannot wait, the counter, the shelf and the return all come off together and the packaging goes back out afterwards. Waiting time on a counter job is the most expensive hour of it.

Greenhill in the housing figures

In the streets around Greenhill, a large share of the housing has gone up in the last fifteen years. Several desks across one estate come off a single slab run, or they will never read as a set. Access is settled before a slab is committed.

What Greenhill asks for

Nothing about the houses on this patch predicts how much of this we do, because it is not housing work. What the houses ask for is worktop replacement, worktop templating and worktop splashbacks & upstands. The stone, the machining and the crew are the same.

Access

Getting stone into a Greenhill kitchen

Multi-storey and podium parking with height barriers, controlled loading bays with strict time limits, and goods lifts that need booking through building management. Station Road and College Road restrictions rule out casual kerbside unloading.

Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Questions

Questions we get asked in Greenhill

If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.

Is Greenhill on your patch?

Yes. Greenhill is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are HA1. It is worked on our north west London run, along with the rest of Harrow. Underground loading has a height restriction, and a van with an A-frame on it is taller than the driver remembers. A commercial frontage rarely has anywhere to stop, so the unload is timed rather than assumed and the counter pieces come off first. The counter comes off the van first and goes in last. The template happens in your kitchen and so does the fit, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.

Why would reception counters in Greenhill be any different from anywhere else?

A raised access floor may still be in place under the finish, and it is hollow, so an island is fixed to what is below rather than to the deck. The commercial work in a neighbourhood of new blocks is concierge desks and ground-floor fit-outs: a managed lobby needing a counter that works as a post point and a security position at once, or a shell unit turned into a dental practice or a clinic. A porter's desk stands on its own carcass, fixed into nothing original. A live soil stack cannot be chased back into the wall, so the depth it steals is permanent and the run is planned around it rather than through it. A counter is worse off than a kitchen here, because it usually stands clear of the wall and has nothing behind it to hide a gap. Stone will not straighten joinery, and it will not forgive it either.

What is the carry like in Greenhill?

Where the parking court sits behind the block the carry crosses open ground and gets boarded, because loaded trolleys and block paving do not agree. A counter top is one long piece with no run of cabinets to break it, so the route decides the join count before the sightlines get a vote. A goods lift diagonal belongs on the counter drawing. Where the bay sits some distance from the core, the carry across the car park is the longest leg of the day and gets boarded and lit. Loading bays belonging to the building are booked by whoever holds the lease, and that is seldom whoever ordered the counter. A booked bay costs less than an hour of a crew standing still.

Is Greenhill really a reception counters area?

Not especially, and pretending otherwise would be simple enough. What the research on this patch actually lists is worktop replacement, worktop templating and worktop splashbacks & upstands. It is a fact about the local housing rather than about the work. The job is quoted, cut and fitted the same way wherever on the patch it lands. Party-wall and lease conditions in a converted building set when noisy work can happen, which shapes the fitting day more than the kitchen does. Counters are nearly always one-offs, so the saving that comes from repeating a specification is not usually on the table here. Nothing is cut until the joinery has been signed off. Several units in one building are fitted out to the same drawing, so an error on that drawing is an error repeated in every flat. Where an operator is fitting out several receptions, the counters come off one slab run so the desks read as a set rather than as neighbours. A phased fit-out gets phased templating, one lobby at a time.

Where does the money go on a Greenhill worktop?

A window at one end and a doorway at the other means one end of the run is lit from behind and the other is interrupted, so the two ends of the same length behave differently. A counter has the same argument in miniature: a straight run nests kindly on a slab, and every return costs yield. External corners on a counter are mitred, never butted. Supply-only material is £110 to £550 per square metre, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted separately rather than rolled in.

What needs to be ready before you come to Greenhill?

Boxing built in plasterboard on a light frame will take no useful fixing, so nothing bears on it and the stone is carried off the carcasses either side. What a counter is scribed to is the joiner's carcass rather than the plaster, which is why it is templated after the carcass is fixed and never before. The front edge runs straight whatever the wall behind it does. Send the lift car internal dimensions and the loading bay rules with the carcass dimensions, and have the operator mark where the payment terminal and cable grommets really go. A street with houses in single occupation next to the same houses cut into flats produces two completely different jobs from the same elevation. The same split runs through commercial property: a landlord fitting out a shell and a tenant fitting out their own reception want different things from one counter. Access and out-of-hours permission sit with the building, not the tenant.

What is the order of events on a Greenhill kitchen?

The same firm templates and fits. Nobody else is brought in to install. Between the template and the fit the slab is nested, cut, mitred and dry-assembled on the bench, which is work you never see and is most of the wait. Nothing is measured until the sink, the tap and the hob are in the room to measure against. Everything arrives through one controlled entrance with a booking sheet, and a delivery that misses its slot waits. A reception counter answers to the building it stands in more than to the drawing, because it is fabricated to a carcass somebody else has already built and fixed. Apertures for cable and card reader are machined, never drilled in a lobby.

What if the stone gets chipped on the way into a Greenhill kitchen?

Damage found on the bench never leaves the workshop, and damage on the carry is remade under the same cover. Stone cannot be filled and made good the way laminate can, so a damaged piece is remade rather than patched. Most breakages happen on the carry, which is why the route is walked and measured before anything comes off the van. Booked delivery windows on a managed estate run to an hour, and a worktop install does not happen inside an hour. A lobby is one of the few places a piece can be staged, so the counter comes in early and stands on trestles until the carcass is ready for it. Pieces come in the order the carcass will accept them.

What if a worktop will not physically fit through the building?

A join added to get stone into the room is a different thing from a join added because the slab ran out, and the quote says which is which. Hoisting through a window is occasionally the answer, and it is a decision made at the template, not improvised on the fitting day. A height barrier on the car park entrance rules out a tail-lift van outright, and the stone then transfers to a trolley at the barrier itself. A finished lobby is almost always still in use, so the floor is covered and the route boarded before a single piece leaves the van. A polished front edge travels facing inward, always.

What is the difference between an upstand and a splashback?

Ordered later from a different batch, the match is not reliable where the two pieces meet. Upstand or splashback, the stone is cut from the same slab run as the worktop, at the same time, so the batch actually matches. It is quoted by area like the worktop, so a long run is a material line rather than a trim. The window line is a continuous ribbon with structural mullions, so a run under it stops at a mullion rather than at a wall. The lobby was finished by the developer, so the counter is scribed to stone, terrazzo or a boarded wall somebody else laid, and that face is measured rather than assumed square. Public counters are specified for wear at the front edge.
