Holborn kitchens
What the kitchens here are actually like
Thick external walls, deep window reveals and boxed risers mean the runs are templated to what is there rather than to a rectangle. The fitting day is planned backwards from all of it, before the first piece comes off the van. One visit, our own installers.
Almost entirely flats, so kitchens are compact fixed rooms of 2.4-3m, usually galley, with services boxed into one corner.
There is very little extension work here and the demand is replacing worn tops and upstands within an existing footprint. Building management will want dust sheets, lift protection and a work window agreed in advance, so template and fit dates have to fit their access hours rather than yours. Congestion Charge zone with red routes on the main east-west roads and effectively no on-street loading near the estates, so access is via a service bay or a courtyard where one exists.
These kitchens are full of boxed soil stacks, gas risers and heating pipework, and the boxing usually stops short of the ceiling. This is the most managed day we do, with a hard finish time set by the block rather than by the work. That is the shape of the day.
The buildings themselves are mostly mansion block, post-war local-authority block, 1980s development and warehouse conversion. A quote that ignores which one you have is guessing.
True everywhere
Worktop installation, in short
- One visit. A straightforward run is a morning; an island and splashbacks take most of the day.
- Every piece is carried in by hand, and stone does not bend.
- We seat and seal the sink and hob. We do not connect water, waste, gas or electrics.
- Floors and units are protected before anything comes through the door.
Covered on our central and north London run. Fitted 3–7 working days from template.

Getting stone into the room
Most blocks have lifts, but they are small passenger cars with a protection booking process attached.

The building, and what it does to the job
A boxed soil stack or service riser in the corner of a run eats into the worktop depth and has to be scribed around rather than cut square. On the day it means dry-laying, marking, and cutting the scribe on site before anything is bonded. Eased in, never forced.
The block's permitted works hours and the booked goods lift slot, which set a hard stop on the day whatever stage we are at.

What gets asked for here
It is on the shortlist for this patch rather than at the top of it, because worktop replacement comes up more often. Nothing about the process differs between the two.

Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Questions
Worktop installation in Holborn
If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.
Is Holborn on your patch?
Yes. Holborn is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are WC1, WC2, EC1. It is worked on our central and north London run, along with the rest of Camden. A red route means no stopping, and no stopping means exactly that, so the stone comes in from a side street or from a bay behind the property. The fitting slot is set around it, which is why we ask about it when the date is booked and not before we leave the yard. We would rather ask than guess. We template in your kitchen and fit in your kitchen, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.
Why would worktop installation in Holborn be any different from anywhere else?
Permitted works hours are commonly weekdays with a late start and an early finish, so a one-day fit is planned around the porter and the lift. The porter has to be booked, the goods lift protected with the block's own blankets or our own boards, and communal carpet and stair runners covered from the entrance to the flat door before a single piece moves. Walked, measured, protected, then lifted. Building management will want dust sheets, lift protection and a work window agreed in advance, so template and fit dates have to fit their access hours rather than yours.
How would you get a worktop into a property in Holborn?
Congestion Charge zone with red routes on the main east-west roads and effectively no on-street loading near the estates, so access is via a service bay or a courtyard where one exists. Most blocks have lifts, but they are small passenger cars with a protection booking process attached. A car that takes 2.4m on the diagonal will not take a three-metre worktop however it is stood, and there is no trimming it on the landing. The fitting day is planned backwards from that point, before anything comes off the van. It gets checked before the first piece is lifted.
Do you do much worktop installation around Holborn?
It is one of the three we do most here, behind worktop replacement. Same template visit, same workshop, same installers either way. Landlord work is scheduled around void periods, so the whole thing is a fixed window and the template date matters as much as the fitting date. The fitting day is scheduled to suit that rather than to suit the diary. One visit, done properly. Quartz suits let property well: no sealing, no annual maintenance, and nothing an incoming tenant has to be told to look after. Where the window is fixed there is no second day to fall back on, so the prep list matters more than usual. The prep list is not optional.
What moves the number on a quote around here?
Two parallel runs with a walkway between them is the most efficient shape there is on a slab, because both pieces nest as straight lengths with almost no waste. Joins are pulled with suction clamps and finished flush, then colour-matched, which is the last thing done rather than the first. Dry-lay first, always. Material is £110-£550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.
What needs to be ready before you come to Holborn?
Boxing is rarely the same depth at worktop height as it is at floor level, so measuring it low down is the usual reason a top will not sit back. On the day it means dry-laying, marking, and cutting the scribe on site before anything is bonded. Dry-lay, mark, cut, then bond. Have the works booking confirmed with the managing agent or porter in advance, with the lift slot and any parking permit or bay suspension in place. The same building type can arrive as a careful one-off kitchen or as a fast turnaround, and the honest answer is that they are priced differently. A half-day of access is not a fitting day, and it is better to say so at booking than to find out at eleven. Protection goes down first.
