Stone bar tops in Ilford
A bar top takes weight on its front edge all evening, so the overhang and what carries it matter more than the slab does.

Ilford kitchens
The buildings and streets around Ilford
The bar tops we do in Ilford follow the same process every time, and it is the kitchen rather than the process that decides how the day actually goes. Two very different jobs sit side by side here: deep Victorian and Edwardian terraces off the main roads where the kitchen has been pushed into a full-width rear extension and runs 3.5-4m along one wall with a peninsula, and new-build flats near the station where the developer's laminate is being swapped for stone in a compact L. Larger family houses frequently want a second prep kitchen or a separate hob run behind a door, so we are often templating two areas in one house. Send through a photograph or two and the rough run length. We will tell you what you are probably dealing with.
Lower ground floor kitchens are reached by a stair with a winder in it, and the head height over that winder is lower than the room at either end. The material question follows from what actually gets put down on it, which is citrus, ice and wet glasses rather than hot pans and chopping boards. Nothing about a bar top is designed around a wall.
The original larder or store cupboard usually survives in a corner, and that alcove is deeper than the units and squarer than the walls around it. A bar in a house of this age is usually either the end of a through-lounge or a cellar conversion, and the cellar is the harder of the two because the headroom fixes the counter height before anybody else gets a say. A cellar bar is set to the headroom first.
The archetypes on this patch are Victorian terrace, Edwardian bay-fronted terrace, 1930s mansion block and 2010s-2020s new-build flat. The floor datum is the thing that changes most between them.
True everywhere
Stone bar tops, in short
- Anything past about 300mm of unsupported overhang gets steel or a corbel underneath.
- The front edge is the one people touch, so it is profiled and polished on all exposed faces.
- Quartz is the usual choice indoors; porcelain and sintered stone where drinks and citrus are constant.
- A bar top is fitted level to itself, not to the floor, because floors in older buildings rarely are.

The place
Why Ilford is its own job
The reason we survey rather than work from a drawing is that a drawing tells you nothing about getting into a kitchen in Ilford. Ilford Lane and the roads off Cranbrook Road are permit-controlled and parked solid both sides, so a slab often comes in on foot from a suspended bay round the corner. New-build blocks mean lift access, booked loading bays and a building manager who wants notice in writing. Assume no kerbside parking outside the door, we plan Ilford jobs around a suspension or an early start, and anything over 3m gets checked against the hallway dogleg before it is cut. It gets measured, drawn, agreed and priced, in that order, and you sign the drawing off before the workshop puts a blade near the slab.
The work
What bar tops involves
It suits a home bar in a converted cellar or a lounge, a breakfast counter on the end of a run, and a working trade bar with a sink and a drip tray underneath. The top is machined at the works with the front edge, the ends and the underside all profiled and polished, since every one of those faces is at eye level from a stool. You are left with a counter level along its own length whatever the floor beneath it is doing, which is what stops a glass wandering across the surface.
A bar is drawn outward from the seat, because where somebody sits fixes the height, the knee room and how far the front edge has to reach. Where the counter has two levels the spine between them is built first, and the two tops are drawn as a pair so the front edges stay parallel down the length. In a house of this age the bar generally stands in a through-lounge or a cellar, and neither floor is flat enough to set a frame down on without packing it. Drawn from the stool and worked back to the wall.

The money
What it costs in Ilford
The finished edge is where the money goes on a bar, since the front, the ends and the underside are all polished where a kitchen run would only ever show one face. Two facing runs mean two sets of edges and two scribes in a small span, which is why a compact galley rarely prices as cheaply as its area suggests. The stone is quoted at £110 to £550 per square metre supply only, and the labour is kept out of it deliberately, because a blended rate hides the lines you would otherwise question. A bar is quoted as a bar, not as extra worktop.

Ilford in the housing figures
Across this patch the bands run low by London standards. There is no standard inter-war plan to work from. A bar added at the end of a project is templated on a visit of its own, once the joinery around it has stopped moving. Measured when the room has finished changing.

What Ilford asks for
Extension kitchens are usually specified long before they are buildable, so the run lengths on the drawing and the run lengths in the room are different numbers. Where the same detail is repeating across several rooms the support gets standardised once and then cut to length, which is cheaper than drawing it each time. What was drawn and what was built are compared at template.
This one sits outside the domestic mix entirely. That mix, locally, is worktop templating, worktop installation and worktop replacement. Commercial pieces are drawn, cut and fitted exactly as a kitchen would be.

Getting stone into an Ilford kitchen
Ilford Lane and the roads off Cranbrook Road are permit-controlled and parked solid both sides, so a slab often comes in on foot from a suspended bay round the corner. New-build blocks mean lift access, booked loading bays and a building manager who wants notice in writing.
Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Questions
Questions we get asked in Ilford
If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.
Do your own fitters come out to Ilford?
Yes. Ilford is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are IG1. It is worked on our east London run, along with the rest of Redbridge. Building management is often the real gate rather than the bay itself, since the barrier, the shutter and the lift each need someone with a fob. A bar fit runs longer than a worktop run, because the frame, the support and the stone are three stages and only the last of them is quick. One van, one bar, one visit. Template and fit both happen at the property, so there is nothing to drive to and nothing to collect.
What do the kitchens in Ilford do to bar tops?
Rear rooms of this date have a wide sash or a pair of garden doors, so a good deal of the wall the run wants is glass. In a cellar the headroom fixes the counter height first and everything else works back from it, and the stair down is the tightest part of the route because stone carried downward is harder to control than stone carried up. Old floors move, so the bar is fixed back as well as down. Walls that bow along their length are the normal condition rather than the exception, and a straight-cut back edge will show a shadow gap at one end and touch at the other. On a bar that counts twice over, because the same obstruction has to be cleared by the stone above it and by the knees of whoever is sitting at it. The frame is made true before the stone is measured.
Do you have trouble getting long pieces into Ilford kitchens?
A lift out of service for the day turns a straightforward install into a stair carry, so the slot gets confirmed with whoever manages the building rather than against a calendar. That matters more on a bar than on a run, because a join forced by the way in cannot be allowed to land in the unsupported part of the nose. The drip tray and the bar sink arrive with the top, not after it. Time-limited bays are camera-enforced across a lot of managed estates, so the unload runs to the clock and the van moves off afterwards. That has to cover more than the unload, since the corbels, the flat bar and the fixings all come off the van well before the top does. Where parking is tight the hardware walks in ahead of the stone.
Does Ilford actually ask for bar tops?
Honestly, no, though it would be easy to claim otherwise. What the research on this patch actually lists is worktop templating, worktop installation and worktop replacement. That says something about the housing round here, not about the work. Quote, cut and fit are the same here as on any other part of the patch. Extension work runs late far more often than it runs early, and the worktop is close to the last thing in, so the date agreed at the start is rarely the date that happens. A bar is nearly always the last thing added to a project, so it is templated on a visit of its own once the joinery around it has stopped moving. A bar is templated after the joinery has stopped moving. Where a family has been living around a building site for months, the finish date carries more weight than any other part of the specification. Harder use and stronger cleaning products push the answer towards porcelain or sintered stone, because a resin-bound surface is the one that shows what has been left standing on it. The support detail is agreed with whoever builds the frame.
What decides the price of a worktop in Ilford?
A galley closed at one end takes a short return across the top, and that little piece carries the same edge work, the same handling and nearly the same cost as a full length. Where the counter runs flush with the working surface instead of standing above it the whole thing becomes one plane, which looks better and doubles the unsupported span. The stool positions go on the drawing before the join does. Reckon on £110 to £550 per square metre for the material supply only, with templating, fabrication and fitting itemised separately.
What do I need to sort out first?
A run can measure dead right at both ends and still belly out in the middle, which only appears once the template plots the intermediate points. Where the nose has to be carried past something fixed the support moves rather than the stone, since a corbel landing in the knee space is worse than no corbel at all. Anything that flexes under the nose shows up at the join. Send the length you want, the number of stools, and photographs walking from the pavement through to the room, including the cellar stair if the bar is going down there. An owner living in the house makes the decisions and lives with them, so the specification tends to go towards the material rather than towards the lowest total. A home bar is discretionary work, so the edge profile, the corbel detail and the radius on the nose are worth settling properly rather than defaulting to whatever is quickest. Sealing a bar top is a yearly job and we say so.
Can I have stone up the wall in an Ilford kitchen?
Both are templated after the worktop is down and settled, because they are cut to the wall itself. A full-height piece shows a wall that is out more than an upstand does, over the extra height. An upstand covers the gap where the worktop meets a wall that is not flat, which is its real job. Internal walls are lath on timber studs while the flank walls are brick, so two walls in the same kitchen take a fixing completely differently. The floor is suspended timber, so the frame is fixed back to a wall as well as bearing down on the boards, or the whole thing shifts when somebody leans on the nose. A bar in a small room is drawn for the stools it will take.
Can a damaged worktop be repaired in place?
Chips at an edge or a corner are the usual form, because that is where stone is least supported. Damage found on the bench never leaves the workshop, and damage on the carry is remade under the same cover. Most breakages happen on the carry, which is why the route is walked and measured before anything comes off the van. Car depth is the number that settles it wherever a piece cannot be stood upright, and most residential cars are shallower than the run they are serving. The steel and the corbels travel that same route and go in first, so a bar is three separate carries into one room rather than a single delivery. A waterfall end travels as its own piece and is bonded in place.
Which materials need sealing and which do not?
A seal is not waterproofing. It only buys time to wipe a spill up. Granite is porous to varying degrees, so it is sealed when we fit it and topped up over the life of the worktop. Sealing is the one maintenance job that genuinely differs by material, and it is worth knowing which you are buying before the slab is chosen. Many were built with a solid sub-floor to the rear rooms, so the kitchen floor is concrete and level while the front of the house is suspended timber. Original walls give nothing straight to work to, which is why a bar here is built as its own frame and scribed at the back rather than trusted to the plaster behind it. Blockwork holds a fixing and plasterboard does not.
Do you take on fitting-only work in Ilford?
Thickness has to be known before quoting, since it decides the edge, the cut-outs and what the units carry. The quote is itemised, so a job where you already hold the slab is the same job with the material line taken off it. Delivery to the workshop has to be arranged and dated, since nothing is nested until it is there. An open-plan extension puts the worktop in the middle of the living space, so it is looked at from the sofa as well as worked on. The support has to be specified to whoever is building the frame before it is boarded up, since steel let in afterwards means taking the front of the bar apart again. Repeated bars get one drawing and one steel schedule.
