Isle of Dogs kitchens
The buildings and streets around Isle of Dogs
Most of the reception counters we do in Isle of Dogs land in one of a few kinds of kitchen, and which one you have changes the job long before the stone is ordered. The 1980s dockside houses have small original kitchens of about 2.2m that owners usually open into the dining room, gaining a peninsula rather than a full island. The towers around the docks run open-plan single-wall kitchens with an integrated appliance stack at one end. You do not have to work out which of those you have. We will look at it with you when we come to Isle of Dogs.
Developer carcasses are thin cam-lock chipboard, which is entirely adequate under laminate and wants bracing before stone. Two working surfaces at two heights, a return between them and clear knee space under the lower one: that is the shape almost every counter ends up being, whatever the front elevation promised. Apertures for cable and card reader are machined, never drilled in a lobby.
A balcony door is the only other opening in the flat and it leads nowhere useful, so everything comes in through the front door. The lobby was finished to the developer's specification, so the counter has to sit against stone or terrazzo somebody else laid. A converted house wants a counter that reads as furniture.
What the research records here is 1980s LDDC dockside housing, 1990s dock warehouse conversion, 2010s onwards tower and post-war estate. The floor datum is the thing that changes most between them.
True everywhere
Reception counters and desks, in short
- A counter on a joiner's carcass is templated after the carcass is in, not from the drawing.
- The lower transaction shelf needs clear knee space beneath it, which decides where a leg or a gable can go.
- Long runs are joined over a support, and the join is placed where the eye does not follow the counter.
- Cable and card-reader apertures are cut in the workshop, not on site.

The place
Why Isle of Dogs is its own job
The questions we ask about a job in Isle of Dogs are about the route, the doorways and the walls, not about the finish. The peninsula has limited road access with congestion at the north end, and the internal roads are heavily bollarded around the docks, so routes are longer than they look. Older low-rise dockside houses have narrow front doors and a stair immediately behind them, while the towers need concierge-booked lifts. It is worth checking on the peninsula whether the address is a 1980s house or a modern tower, because they are completely different access jobs at the same postcode. Have a look at the itemised quote and you can see what the building is costing and what the stone is costing.
The work
What reception counters involves
Support for any overhang at the public face belongs to the drawing, whether that turns out to be a steel flat, a plywood deck or a gable the joiner adds for us. Piece sizes are set from the way into the building before the slab is nested, so a join added for access still lands over a support instead of in open span. You end up with every visible edge finished alike, front, back and both returns, because a counter is seen from all sides in a way a worktop never is.
This is commercial fit-out work cut on the same saw as a kitchen, with an entirely different set of questions attached to it. Where a run is longer than one piece can be, the join is placed over a support and away from the line the eye travels along. A concierge desk in a managed block works as a post point and a security position at once, and the low shelf carries both. The low shelf is a requirement, not a styling choice.

The money
What it costs in Isle of Dogs
A counter is priced by its pieces rather than by its frontage, because the two heights, the return and the knee recess are separate operations before they are one desk. A peninsula has a finished end and often an overhang, so it carries edge work a wall-side run never does. The rate is £110 to £550 per square metre supply only, though what you buy is slabs rather than square metres, which is why the material line follows the yield and not the tape. Working at night is quoted as working at night, or not at all.

Victorian and Edwardian terraces
The carry, and what it rules out
The lift is only part of the route, and the corridor from the lobby to the flat door often holds a tighter turn than the car does. A lobby is one of the few places a piece can be staged, so the counter comes in early and stands on trestles until the carcass is ready for it. Trestles go up in the lobby before anything is unwrapped.

What Isle of Dogs asks for
This one sits outside the domestic mix entirely. That mix, locally, is worktop replacement, worktop installation and worktop templating. Commercial pieces are drawn, cut and fitted exactly as a kitchen would be.

Isle of Dogs in the housing figures
Taken across Isle of Dogs and the roads either side of it, converted and purpose-built flats make up most of the stock. The scribe allowance is smaller than the London average. A lobby reached only by stairs puts a fourth pair of hands on a desk that would otherwise take two. Nothing about the low shelf is a preference.
Access
Getting stone into an Isle of Dogs kitchen
The peninsula has limited road access with congestion at the north end, and the internal roads are heavily bollarded around the docks, so routes are longer than they look. Older low-rise dockside houses have narrow front doors and a stair immediately behind them, while the towers need concierge-booked lifts.
Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Questions
Questions we get asked in Isle of Dogs
If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.
Is Isle of Dogs on your patch?
Yes. Isle of Dogs is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are E14. It is worked on our east London run, along with the rest of Tower Hamlets. Unrestricted does not mean empty, and a street that is clear at seven is usually full by nine. A commercial frontage rarely has anywhere to stop, so the unload is timed rather than assumed and the counter pieces come off first. The van stays put while the carcass is being scribed to. Template and fit both happen at the property, so there is nothing to drive to and nothing to collect.
Does the housing in Isle of Dogs change how reception counters works?
Sprinkler heads and extract ducts are coordinated into the ceiling, so an extractor over an island goes where the services already allow. The commercial work in a neighbourhood of new blocks is concierge desks and ground-floor fit-outs: a managed lobby needing a counter that works as a post point and a security position at once, or a shell unit turned into a dental practice or a clinic. Old shopfronts were never sized for a three-metre top. Where the boxing stands proud of the finished wall the upstand behind it has to be broken into separate lengths, because one piece cannot pass it. A counter is worse off than a kitchen here, because it usually stands clear of the wall and has nothing behind it to hide a gap. The front edge runs straight whatever the wall behind it does.
How does the stone actually reach a kitchen in Isle of Dogs?
A rated load sounds ample until three lengths of granite and two fitters are standing on it, so the stone goes up one piece at a time. A counter top is one long piece with no run of cabinets to break it, so the route decides the join count before the sightlines get a vote. The transaction shelf goes almost anywhere the upper top will not. A skip, a delivery lorry or a run of scaffolding takes the frontage the van needed, so the street is worth a look the day before rather than on the morning. Loading bays belonging to the building are booked by whoever holds the lease, and that is seldom whoever ordered the counter. A red route puts a clock on a counter that will not be rushed.
Do you get much reception counters work in Isle of Dogs?
Honestly, no, though it would be easy to claim otherwise. What the research on this patch actually lists is worktop replacement, worktop installation and worktop templating. That says something about the housing round here, not about the work. Quote, cut and fit are the same here as on any other part of the patch. Extension work runs late far more often than it runs early, and the worktop is close to the last thing in, so the date agreed at the start is rarely the date that happens. Counters are nearly always one-offs, so the saving that comes from repeating a specification is not usually on the table here. A weekend fit is planned as a weekend fit from the outset. Where a family has been living around a building site for months, the finish date carries more weight than any other part of the specification. Where an operator is fitting out several receptions, the counters come off one slab run so the desks read as a set rather than as neighbours. A repeatable counter needs a repeatable material.
What am I actually paying for, line by line?
A breakfast bar on the outer side is an overhang like any other, and the support under it is sized for people leaning on the end rather than for the weight of the stone alone. A counter has the same argument in miniature: a straight run nests kindly on a slab, and every return costs yield. A counter join lines up with the plane above it or it gets moved. Material runs £110 to £550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting each get their own line.
Is there anything I have to finish before the template in Isle of Dogs?
A boxed soil stack or service riser in the corner of a run eats into the worktop depth and has to be scribed around rather than cut square. What a counter is scribed to is the joiner's carcass rather than the plaster, which is why it is templated after the carcass is fixed and never before. Where the plaster bows, the counter is drawn away from it. Send the lift car internal dimensions and the loading bay rules with the carcass dimensions, and have the operator mark where the payment terminal and cable grommets really go. Mixed ownership means the decision-maker is not always the person who lets us in, so it is worth being clear early about who signs the quote off. The same split runs through commercial property: a landlord fitting out a shell and a tenant fitting out their own reception want different things from one counter. Whoever holds the keys holds the fitting slot.
What happens if my units are not level?
A long top on units that were shimmed once and never checked is the commonest version of this, and it is cheap to fix beforehand. Stone does not flex, so a run that rocks on its carcasses rocks just as badly once it is stone. An island is where this usually shows, standing free with no wall to level against. Boxing is rarely the same depth at worktop height as it is at floor level, so measuring it low down is the usual reason a top will not sit back. A lobby wall that leans shows itself along the back return, so that edge is cut to the line the wall actually takes. A shadow gap solves what a scribe cannot.
Do you take on fitting-only work in Isle of Dogs?
Sinks, taps and hobs are yours to buy in any case, and they only have to be in the room for the template. Stone cut to somebody else’s drawing cannot usefully be re-cut to yours. The quote is itemised, so a job where you already hold the slab is the same job with the material line taken off it. An open-plan extension puts the worktop in the middle of the living space, so it is looked at from the sofa as well as worked on. A fit-out programme puts the counter last, behind the joiner and the electrician, which is exactly when the least time is left to template it. Fit-out programmes slip toward the counter, never away from it.
Which materials need sealing and which do not?
Granite is porous to varying degrees, so it is sealed when we fit it and topped up over the life of the worktop. The bead where the sink and hob meet the stone is siliconed rather than sealed, and wants watching. Sealing is the one maintenance job that genuinely differs by material, and it is worth knowing which you are buying before the slab is chosen. A riverside block is a managed building with a booked goods lift, a loading bay and a concierge, and all three have to line up on the same day. The lobby was finished by the developer, so the counter is scribed to stone, terrazzo or a boarded wall somebody else laid, and that face is measured rather than assumed square. The service road at the back is often the real way in.
Who removes the old worktop in an Isle of Dogs kitchen?
The sink and hob are lifted out with the old top and kept aside if you are reusing them. Take the old tops off yourself if you would rather, and the quote simply carries one line fewer. Taking the old tops off and disposing of them is its own line on the quote rather than something folded into the stone price. Where parking runs down both sides the road is left as a single lane, and a van standing in it has to be somewhere it does not stop a bin lorry. The upper counter is the longest piece on the van, so the tail lift needs the full swing radius clear on the pavement. Where the bay is booked by the hour, pieces come off in fitting order.

Kareem did the countertops dur8ng my kitchen remodel, and I was so impressed that I had him back to do the laundry room as well, which tells you everything you need to know. He is an absolute gem. Shows up when he says he will (which, let’s be honest, is rarer than it should be), does beautifully work, and clearly takes real pride in what he does. The countertops look fantastic, and he even went above and beyond, using leftover quartz to create an extra counter in my bathroom. Genius. He’s kind, professional, reasonably priced, and just gets on with it. No fuss, no drama, just a job very well done. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend him and will absolutely be using him again if the need arises. Happy to answer any questions.
