Latchmere kitchens
What the kitchens here are actually like
A hundred and forty years of alterations sit under the current kitchen, and the worktop is what has to sit flat on top of all of it. Old top out in the morning, new stone down and sealed the same afternoon, with a plumber either side of us. A single day, planned properly.
The interwar and postwar blocks have separate kitchens with a fixed sink position under the window and boxed services in one corner.
Parking bays on the estate are permit-allocated and enforced. Estate blocks have controlled entry and shared stairs; the older ones have balcony access along the front, which means a long horizontal carry past neighbours' doors. In these blocks the waste position is fixed and often high in the wall, so the sink cutout cannot be moved more than a few centimetres without re-plumbing. Small Victorian model cottages with kitchens under 8 square metres take a single wall run and a fridge alcove, nothing more.
Floors are suspended timber over a shallow void and have moved, so the units are packed and levelled before anything is set on them. In most Victorian terraces the kitchen sits in the back addition, so you get a narrow galley with one outside wall and nothing square to work off. What is under the old top is the real question.
The stock behind these kitchens runs to Victorian model-dwelling terrace, Interwar council block, Postwar estate housing and 1990s infill. Which of those you have decides most of what follows.
True everywhere
Worktop replacement, in short
- The units stay. Only the surface changes.
- Old tops come out in the morning, new stone is down and sealed the same day.
- A plumber disconnects the tap and waste before we arrive and reconnects at the end of the day.
- The carcasses have to be sound: stone is far heavier than laminate.
Covered on our south west London run. Fitted 3–7 working days from template.
Victorian and Edwardian terraces
The building, and what it does to the job
Floors and walls that have settled towards the back addition, so the existing run is out of level and the stone will show it the moment it is set and levelled properly.
Victorian and Edwardian terraces
The shape of the run
A galley puts the sink on one side and the hob on the other, which spreads the cut-outs across two pieces instead of weakening one. Old laminate has often been holding a run square for years, and taking it off shows what the units were really doing. Height change is checked before we cut.

What gets asked for here
This is the job the local stock asks for first, ahead of worktop splashbacks & upstands and worktop installation.

Getting stone into a Latchmere kitchen
Estate blocks have controlled entry and shared stairs; the older ones have balcony access along the front, which means a long horizontal carry past neighbours' doors. Parking bays on the estate are permit-allocated and enforced.
Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Questions
Worktop replacement in Latchmere
If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.
Do you cover Latchmere?
Yes. Latchmere is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are SW11. It is worked on our south west London run, along with the rest of Wandsworth. Without a bay the van ends up on a single yellow with a crew member watching it, which takes a pair of hands off the carry. We stage the strip-out so the old tops leave in one trip rather than trickling out across the afternoon. The waste run is planned, not improvised. We template in your kitchen and fit in your kitchen, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.
Does the housing in Latchmere change how worktop replacement works?
Floors are suspended timber over a shallow void and have moved, so the units are packed and levelled before anything is set on them. In most Victorian terraces the kitchen sits in the back addition, so you get a narrow galley with one outside wall and nothing square to work off. What is under the old top is the real question. In these blocks the waste position is fixed and often high in the wall, so the sink cutout cannot be moved more than a few centimetres without re-plumbing.
How does the stone actually reach a kitchen in Latchmere?
Estate blocks have controlled entry and shared stairs; the older ones have balcony access along the front, which means a long horizontal carry past neighbours' doors. Parking bays on the estate are permit-allocated and enforced. Communal stairs get boarded and the handrail padded, and we walk the route with a tape before the first piece leaves the van. We plan the strip-out and the carry as one movement so the kitchen is only out of use for a single day. That is agreed before a plumber is booked.
Is Latchmere mostly worktop replacement work for you?
Yes. On the research for this patch it is the first of the three jobs listed, ahead of worktop splashbacks & upstands and worktop installation. The junction between the original room and the extension is the point to watch, because the two floors rarely sit at the same height. Old tops out in the morning, new stone down and sealed the same afternoon. Sound carcasses or it does not go ahead. Extension kitchens are usually specified long before they are buildable, so the run lengths on the drawing and the run lengths in the room are different numbers. The carcasses have to be sound, because stone is several times the weight of what is coming off. A day, not a project.
Why do two Latchmere kitchens the same size price differently?
A galley puts the sink on one side and the hob on the other, which spreads the cut-outs across two pieces instead of weakening one. Old laminate has often been holding a run square for years, and taking it off shows what the units were really doing. Height change is checked before we cut. Material is £110-£550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.
What has to be finished before you can template?
Boxing is rarely the same depth at worktop height as it is at floor level, so measuring it low down is the usual reason a top will not sit back. The old top has been hiding it, so the first honest look at it happens when the laminate comes off. Found at template, not on fit day. Have a plumber booked to disconnect the sink, tap and waste first thing and reconnect after we have gone, and clear the hallway and stairs completely so we can carry slabs through the house. Where a landlord or housing provider is involved there is a specification to meet and a process to follow, and both are settled before a date is offered. If the carcasses are tired the honest answer is that stone will find that out, and it is better said before than after. Sound carcasses are the condition.
