These houses usually sit in their own grounds with a long approach, so the carry from van to door is longer than anything inside the building. Islands here regularly run longer than a slab, so the join is nested to sit over an internal gable and positioned so it does not run through the hob cut-out, and on a heavily veined stone we nest the island and the back run together so the movement relates across the room. The bench proves it before the van moves. Marble here is specified by the designer and it stains - get the client to sign off on sealing and expected patina before you fabricate, because the complaint always comes later.

Estate freeholders impose alteration consents and works hours, the buildings are listed so nothing gets fixed to original fabric without approval, and the lifts in period blocks are small original cars that will not take a slab. Deliveries are frequently routed through the mews at the back on a permit. Piece length is set by the internal diagonal of the lift car, not by the length of the slab. Getting that wrong leaves a finished, machined piece that cannot reach the room, which is a remake rather than a trim. It is settled on the bench, not on site.

If the island is a few hundred millimetres longer than the usable length of a slab, a second slab gets bought to gain that overhang, and the whole slab is paid for rather than the part used. The nest is laid out around that, with joins placed over cabinet gables and kept clear of every cut-out. The bench proves it before the van does. Material is £110-£550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.

Where a breast interrupts a long wall the join can often go there, so it reads as a natural break rather than a line in the middle of a worktop. Cut it square where it should be radiused and the piece will fail on the lift, not in the kitchen. The drawing decides it, not the fitter. The range or Aga, the sink and the tap all need to be confirmed by model before nesting, because their clearances and hole positions set where the island can be cut. Where someone is living in the house through the work, the strip-out and the fit are planned so the kitchen is out of use for a day and not a week. Changing an appliance after the nest is set means recutting the piece, not adjusting it. The approved drawing is the instruction.
