Mortlake kitchens

What the kitchens here are actually like

Victorian terraceEdwardian terrace1930s flats2020s brewery site redevelopment

Lath and plaster, a settled floor and a hall with a turn in it are the three things that decide how this job runs. Two to three hours on site, once the units are fitted, fixed and level. The room as it is, to the millimetre.

Modest Victorian and Edwardian terraces near the river with rear kitchens of 2.4m by 3.5m and a common single-storey infill, plus a growing stock of new apartments on the old brewery site with developer-fitted kitchens along one wall and a short island. The level crossing on the main road stops traffic repeatedly and the riverside streets are narrow with parking both sides; the new development has controlled access, allocated bays and lifts with booking sheets. New-build kitchens on the redevelopment come with thin composite tops that clients upgrade early, so it is usually a swap onto existing carcasses with the sink and tap reused.

Half-landings mean the back of the house sits at a slightly different level from the front, and a knocked-through kitchen crosses that line. The template plots the bow along the back of the run, which is why a tape reading taken beforehand never matches. Two to three hours, once the units are in.

The mix here is Victorian terrace, Edwardian terrace, 1930s flats and 2020s brewery site redevelopment. They are not interchangeable, and a worktop finds the differences quickly.

True everywhere

Worktop templating, in short

  • Two to three hours on site for a typical kitchen.
  • Units must be fitted, fixed and level first. No stone is ever cut from a plan.
  • Sink, tap and hob must be physically on site, not just ordered.
  • A Belfast or butler sink must be installed and at its final height.

Covered on our south west London run. Fitted 3–7 working days from template.

Getting stone into the room

Piece length is set by the internal diagonal of the lift car, not by the length of the slab. A template taken without walking the route produces a drawing that cuts beautifully and will not go in. That is part of what the visit is for.

What gets asked for here

The research on this patch does not put this among the three commonest jobs. Worktop replacement, worktop installation and worktop splashbacks & upstands do. That changes how often we are here, not how the work is done.

Victorian and Edwardian terraces

True everywhere, stated once

A template records what the building actually did, not what the plan intended. How far those two things diverge is entirely a function of when the house was built.

Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Questions

Worktop templating in Mortlake

If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.

Do you cover Mortlake?

Yes. Mortlake is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are SW14. It is worked on our south west London run, along with the rest of Richmond upon Thames. Gravel and block paving both look like hard standing and neither takes a loaded trolley, so the run from tail lift to door gets boarded. The templating visit needs somewhere to stop for two or three hours, which is a different problem from unloading for twenty minutes. The templater needs a proper stop, not a pause. We template in your kitchen and fit in your kitchen, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.

Does the housing in Mortlake change how worktop templating works?

The rear extension is frequently original rather than added, which means it is solidly built and just as far out of square as the rest of the house. Victorian party walls and chimney-breast returns bow along their length, so the template plots the real line rather than assuming a straight one - the template picks up points every few hundred millimetres down the back of the run and the drawing carries that curve through to the saw. Two to three hours, once the units are in. New-build kitchens on the redevelopment come with thin composite tops that clients upgrade early, so it is usually a swap onto existing carcasses with the sink and tap reused.

How does the stone actually reach a kitchen in Mortlake?

The level crossing on the main road stops traffic repeatedly and the riverside streets are narrow with parking both sides; the new development has controlled access, allocated bays and lifts with booking sheets. Piece length is set by the internal diagonal of the lift car, not by the length of the slab. Door widths, turn diagonals and any change of level are recorded on the drawing alongside the run dimensions. It goes on the drawing with the run dimensions.

Do you get much worktop templating work in Mortlake?

Not particularly, and it would be easy to pretend otherwise. What the research on this patch actually lists is worktop replacement, worktop installation and worktop splashbacks & upstands. That is a statement about the local housing rather than about the work. It is quoted, cut and fitted exactly the same way here as anywhere else on the patch. Housings and integrated appliances are set out for a 38mm laminate top, so dropping to 20mm or 30mm stone changes the clearances and needs checking before anything is cut. The template visit is booked once the units are genuinely in, not when they are nearly in. Appliances on site, not on order.

Why do two Mortlake kitchens the same size price differently?

A galley puts the sink on one side and the hob on the other, which spreads the cut-outs across two pieces instead of weakening one. The template records every angle in that shape as it actually is rather than as the plan drew it. One datum for the whole room. Material is £110-£550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.

What has to be finished before you can template?

A run can measure dead right at both ends and still belly out in the middle, which only appears once the template plots the intermediate points. One measurement never describes it, which is why a tape reading taken before the visit rarely matches the template. Measured at worktop height, nowhere else. Units fixed and packed level over the sloping floor, walls replastered and dry at their final thickness (tiling and splashbacks go on after the worktop, never before), and the sink, tap and hob physically on site, with a Belfast sink built in and set at its finished height. Mixed ownership means the decision-maker is not always the person who lets us in, so it is worth being clear early about who signs the quote off. A template booked hopefully around another trade is the commonest cause of a wasted visit. Fitted, fixed and level, then we come.
