Stone bar tops in Norbury

A bar top takes weight on its front edge all evening, so the overhang and what carries it matter more than the slab does.

The buildings and streets around Norbury

Edwardian terrace1930s semiflats above London Road shops1960s block

If you are weighing up stone bar top work in Norbury, the first thing worth knowing is that the building decides more than the brochure does. Edwardian terraces near the station with rear-addition kitchens, and 1930s semis climbing the hill towards Norbury Park with larger square kitchens that take a proper island. Shop-top flats have minimal kitchens of 2m or less along one wall. Nothing above needs settling before you get in touch. It gets settled with a tape measure, in your kitchen, in Norbury.

Chimney breasts are often taken out at ground level and left standing above, so the middle of the run is newer wall than the two ends of it. None of that stops a bar being fitted level, but it does mean the top is set to a datum of its own and packed off the frame rather than followed down to the floor. Elbows and glasses, not knives and pans.

The addition wall is half a brick thick in places and has usually had a damp course injected and been re-plastered, which leaves it neither flat nor consistent. Original walls give nothing straight to work to, which is why a bar here is built as its own frame and scribed at the back rather than trusted to the plaster behind it. The riser gets notched around, not built away from.

Around here the stock is Edwardian terrace, 1930s semi, flats above London Road shops and 1960s block. They fail in different places, which is why the survey looks at different things.

True everywhere

Stone bar tops, in short

  • Anything past about 300mm of unsupported overhang gets steel or a corbel underneath.
  • The front edge is the one people touch, so it is profiled and polished on all exposed faces.
  • Quartz is the usual choice indoors; porcelain and sintered stone where drinks and citrus are constant.
  • A bar top is fitted level to itself, not to the floor, because floors in older buildings rarely are.

The place

Why Norbury is its own job

The difference between a smooth day in Norbury and a wasted one is usually decided before we arrive. London Road has red route restrictions through the day, so timing matters; the residential roads climbing east are steep with parking on both sides and short driveways. Anything on the London Road frontage has to be unloaded outside restricted hours, so we book those fits first thing rather than mid-morning. We would rather tell you about that before you pay a deposit than explain it afterwards.

The work

What bar tops involves

It suits a home bar in a converted cellar or a lounge, a breakfast counter on the end of a run, and a working trade bar with a sink and a drip tray underneath. Where the front edge reaches past what the frame will carry, flat steel is let in flush with the bearing face or corbels are fixed to structure, and which of the two is agreed with you rather than decided on the morning. You end up with a surface chosen for what gets put down on it, so a wet glass standing all evening and a slice of lemon are not the things that spoil it.

Most bar tops we are asked to quote began life on a plan as a seating projection that somebody assumed the cabinets would carry. Anything beyond roughly 300mm of unsupported projection gets flat steel let into the frame or corbels beneath it, and which of the two is a decision about how the piece reads from a seat. The hall and the turn at the stairs cap how long a single piece can be, which is why a long counter here arrives as two pieces with a planned break. One visit, and the bar is usable that evening.

The money

What it costs in Norbury

A bar is quoted as joinery and stone together, so the frame, the support and the top each appear on the sheet instead of being folded into a rate for the surface. Two facing runs mean two sets of edges and two scribes in a small span, which is why a compact galley rarely prices as cheaply as its area suggests. For a rough sense of the material, £110 to £550 per square metre supply only is the honest span. Treat it as one line of a quote that will carry several more. The steel under the front edge is a line, not an assumption.

Victorian and Edwardian terraces

The carry, and what it rules out

A dropped kerb wide enough for a car is not always wide enough for a long-wheelbase van, and the width of the crossing decides the rest. That has to cover more than the unload, since the corbels, the flat bar and the fixings all come off the van well before the top does. Where parking is tight the hardware walks in ahead of the stone.

What Norbury asks for

The building stock on this patch tells us nothing useful about this service, because this service is not driven by it. It is driven by worktop replacement, worktop splashbacks & upstands and worktop installation on the domestic side. The method does not change.

Victorian and Edwardian terraces

Norbury in the housing figures

Taken across Norbury and the roads either side of it, almost nothing has gone up in the last fifteen years, which makes the carcass check the first question rather than the last. Where the same detail repeats across several rooms the support is standardised once and cut to length afterwards. The seating side sets the piece.

Access

Getting stone into a Norbury kitchen

London Road has red route restrictions through the day, so timing matters; the residential roads climbing east are steep with parking on both sides and short driveways.

Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Questions

Questions we get asked in Norbury

If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.

Are you set up to work in Norbury, or is it a subcontractor?

Yes. Norbury is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are SW16. It is worked on our south London run, along with the rest of Croydon. Where a car has to come off the drive first, it is worth knowing whose car it is and whether the keys are in the house on the morning. A bar fit runs longer than a worktop run, because the frame, the support and the stone are three stages and only the last of them is quick. A bar top left on a pavement is a bar top with a chipped nose. The measuring and the fitting are both done at the property, so there is nothing to visit or collect.

Is there anything about Norbury buildings that catches bar tops out?

Where the side return has been filled in, the old external wall is now an internal one and still carries its render, its gutter line and its old fixings. A bar in one of these houses is either the end of a through-lounge or a cellar conversion, and the two behave differently. Two tiers where a single piece will not reach. Walls that bow along their length are the normal condition rather than the exception, and a straight-cut back edge will show a shadow gap at one end and touch at the other. On a bar that counts twice over, because the same obstruction has to be cleared by the stone above it and by the knees of whoever is sitting at it. What carries the overhang is fixed to structure, not to lining.

What do you check about the route into a Norbury property?

Even an easy kerbside carry wants the pavement clear at the tail lift, because a three-metre piece on edge has a swing radius nobody expects until it is swinging. That matters more on a bar than on a run, because a join forced by the way in cannot be allowed to land in the unsupported part of the nose. The nose is the corner that gets caught, so it travels padded. A gate post set narrower than the opening looks generous from the road and stops a wide piece a metre in. A trade bar is fitted around opening times, so the window the van has and the window the room has are rarely the same window. What comes off the van first is whatever holds the top up.

Is bar tops what Norbury is known for?

Not really, and claiming otherwise would cost nothing and mean nothing. What the research on this patch actually lists is worktop replacement, worktop splashbacks & upstands and worktop installation. It reflects the local housing rather than any difference in the work. It is quoted, cut and fitted here the same way it is anywhere else on the patch. Rear and side-return extensions are where the islands appear, and an island is the piece that decides whether one slab does the kitchen or two. A bar is nearly always the last thing added to a project, so it is templated on a visit of its own once the joinery around it has stopped moving. A bar goes in last, so it is measured last. A new extension slab is not automatically level, and that wants checking before templating rather than after the stone is cut. Where the same detail is repeating across several rooms the support gets standardised once and then cut to length, which is cheaper than drawing it each time. What gets leaned on gets specified for leaning.

Why do two Norbury kitchens the same size price differently?

Handles on opposing runs meet in the middle of the aisle, so a deep edge profile specified on both sides takes width out of the standing space twice over. A bar laid over that is a second level rather than a wider one, so it wants a spine underneath it and a settled detail where the two heights meet. The seating side decides the piece; the wall side never does. Supply-only material is £110 to £550 per square metre, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted separately rather than rolled in.

What has to be finished before you can template?

A run can measure dead right at both ends and still belly out in the middle, which only appears once the template plots the intermediate points. A bar top is levelled to itself rather than to what it stands on, so the packing goes into the frame and the stools take up whatever the floor is doing. A corbel never lands where a knee goes. Send the length you want, the number of stools, and photographs walking from the pavement through to the room, including the cellar stair if the bar is going down there. Where ownership is split across a building, the common parts belong to someone else and the carry route is negotiated rather than assumed. A home bar is discretionary work, so the edge profile, the corbel detail and the radius on the nose are worth settling properly rather than defaulting to whatever is quickest. The radius on the nose is a decision, not a default.

Do you cut drainer grooves on Norbury kitchens?

On a porous stone the grooved area is sealed with the rest, and it gets wet more than anything else. The bowl position has to be settled before templating, since the grooves are set out from it. Which side of the bowl they go is about how you stand at the sink, and it is settled before cutting. An under-stairs cupboard eats one end of most of these kitchens, and the run stops at a door that has to keep opening. A bar top put into a room like that is an overhang question first, because the nose has to carry people leaning on it long after the slab has stopped being interesting. The seating side is the side the piece is drawn from.

What if a worktop will not physically fit through the building?

If a piece cannot be got in at all, we say so at the template rather than on the day. The alternative to a join is a shorter run, which is usually the wrong thing to trade away. Doorways, the newel post and the handrail usually take the room away, rather than the stairs themselves. A level threshold with hard standing outside it is the one arrangement where a full run goes in without a single re-grip. The steel and the corbels travel that same route and go in first, so a bar is three separate carries into one room rather than a single delivery. Steel for the overhang is carried in and fixed before the stone.

What happens to the worktop that comes off?

What comes out goes by the same route the new stone comes in by, which is why that route is walked before anything is lifted. Disposal means it goes in the van, not into the garden to wait for a collection. Tiling bonded to the wall behind usually comes away with the old top, so that wall is agreed beforehand. Overhanging branches clear the roof of a car and catch the roof of a van, so the drive is looked at from the driver seat rather than from the doorstep. Where the clock is running the frame is levelled and the steel is in before the top ever leaves the tail lift. The van stands for the frame as well as the top.

Can a Norbury worktop be done in one piece?

An island often runs in one piece where a wall run cannot. A mitred join at a corner is a different job from a butt join along a run, and they are not priced the same. A join is glued and clamped flush on the day, so it is fixed rather than something to be undone. Older houses put the boiler or the meter on one of the two walls, and whatever is boxed in around it sets the point where that run has to stop. Where the counter runs flush with the working surface instead of standing above it the whole thing becomes one plane, which looks better and doubles the unsupported span. Two heights means two edge profiles and a spine between them.

We recently had a Calacatta Gold worktop installed by Worktop Worx and are really pleased with the result. It has completely transformed our kitchen, much brighter, modern, and high-end compared to our old wooden surface. The team were professional, efficient, and the finish is excellent with great attention to detail. The worktop looks amazing and is very practical for everyday use. Highly recommend Worktop Worx for anyone looking for quality quartz worktops.
