North Feltham kitchens

The buildings and streets around North Feltham

Postwar terrace1960s maisonetteindustrial-fringe housing

Half of what we get asked about bathroom worktop fitting in North Feltham could be answered by a tape measure and ten minutes in the room in question. Small postwar terraces and maisonettes with tight galleys under 2.5m, all appliances undercounter, and no realistic scope for an island or a peninsula. We would rather find an out of square wall at survey than on fitting day, so the survey is thorough and unhurried.

A cylinder cupboard or a drying cupboard opens off the kitchen, taking a corner out of the run and giving nothing back. For a vanity the length is rarely the argument, because it is the depth and what has to be drilled through it that set the piece. The same stone as the kitchen, in a narrower cut.

The internal stair is usually a straight flight with a tight top landing, and it is the landing rather than the flight that is the limit. Floors are solid, so the unit sits where it is put and the levelling is done under it rather than argued with afterwards. A bathroom over a kitchen has its waste run already decided.

The kitchens we see here sit in Postwar terrace, 1960s maisonette and industrial-fringe housing. The wall build-up is different in each, and the scribe follows the wall.

True everywhere

Bathroom worktops and vanity tops, in short

  • Standard vanity depths are far narrower than a kitchen run, so most tops come out of offcut stock.
  • Undermount basins are bonded and the aperture is polished, because the cut edge is visible from above.
  • Tap holes are drilled to the tap you have actually bought, not to a standard spacing.
  • We seat and seal the basin. A plumber connects the water and waste.

The place

Why North Feltham is its own job

Working in North Feltham regularly means we plan for what catches people out here rather than finding it on the day. Wide roads and easy parking near the Causeway and the industrial estates, but signage is poor and estate entrances are shared with HGV traffic. Runs rarely exceed 2.4m here, so most jobs come off a single half-slab with no joints at all, which keeps the fabrication simple and the fit quick. You see the drawing before we cut, and if we have read the room wrong, that is the moment to say so, not the morning the fitters arrive.

The work

What bathroom worktops involves

The work carries the same five year workmanship guarantee as a kitchen, because seating stone is the same work at either size. The vanity unit needs to be fixed, level and empty before the templater comes, because the top is drawn from the carcass rather than from the room. You end up with a bathroom surface in the same stone as the rest of the house, cut for the basin you chose rather than for a standard one.

A vanity top is a small piece of stone with a basin, its tap holes and a splash return all inside a few hundred millimetres. Tap holes are drilled to the tap that has actually been bought, so the tap is confirmed by model before the top is machined. Rooms here are small and square, so the template is quick and the piece nests into offcut stock without difficulty. Drilled to your tap, not to a standard spacing.

The money

What it costs in North Feltham

A vanity costs what it costs because of how much is drilled and polished into a short piece, not because of the area of stone in it. Overhangs, a waterfall end and seating all add machining, and an island is where those decisions cluster. Supply-only material is £110 to £550 per square metre. The more useful question is not which end of that you are at, but how many operations the cut list carries. A bathroom quote you can read without a calculator.

Victorian and Edwardian terraces

North Feltham in the housing figures

Across North Feltham, upper-band homes are rare in the stock. Corners tend to come in close to square. An en-suite added to a bedroom is another vanity carrying the same work at a reduced size. The vanity is cut to this bathroom and to no other.

Victorian and Edwardian terraces

The carry, and what it rules out

On a street with no restrictions the constraint is other residents rather than a warden, so it is worth putting a cone or a car out early. A vanity fit is a short visit with one or two pieces in it, so the van stands only for as long as it takes to walk them in. A cloakroom top is a single armful off the tail lift.

What North Feltham asks for

This is commercial work rather than something the housing here generates. Domestically these streets ask for worktop replacement, worktop fabrication and worktop installation. It runs through the same template, the same bench and the same fitters.

Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Questions

Questions we get asked in North Feltham

If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.

Do you actually work in North Feltham, or just list it?

Yes. North Feltham is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are TW14. It is worked on our west London run, along with the rest of Hounslow. A free-parking street with cars both sides can still leave the van forty metres away, and that distance is carry, not driving. Where the van cannot wait, the top, the shelves and the adhesive all come in on the first trip and the van goes. The van moves on. The fitter stays with the vanity. We template in your kitchen and fit in your kitchen, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.

Why would bathroom worktops in North Feltham be any different from anywhere else?

These are built in dense concrete, so support for a peninsula or an end panel goes in with proper anchors rather than plugs. Bathrooms in this stock are compact, squarely built and take a short vanity that will come out of almost any offcut, which makes them among the cheapest bathroom tops we cut. High ceilings do nothing for a vanity, but the reveals do. A live soil stack cannot be chased back into the wall, so the depth it steals is permanent and the run is planned around it rather than through it. Bathrooms carry the same problems in a smaller room, and a smaller room leaves a vanity nowhere to absorb them. The tile joint behind is what shows a top that is not level.

What is the carry like in North Feltham?

A hall that widens further in is still only as good as its tightest point, and that point is usually within a metre of the front door. The exception is a double vanity, which is a kitchen length in bathroom width and behaves like a worktop from the tail lift onwards. A cut top is weaker than an uncut one, so it travels differently. Where the van can pull up level with the gate the pieces are handled the fewest times, which is what actually protects them. A bathroom booked on its own rarely fills a day, so it can be put into whichever part of the day the street is easiest. Ordered with the kitchen, the bathroom costs no extra journey.

Does North Feltham actually ask for bathroom worktops?

Not to any real extent, and it would be easy to imply it was. What the research on this patch actually lists is worktop replacement, worktop fabrication and worktop installation. It describes the kitchens on this patch, not the work that goes into them. Same quoting, same cutting, same fitting as anywhere else on the patch. The person choosing the worktop is not the person using it, and that shifts the balance from appearance towards running cost. Work of that kind brings en-suites with it, and an en-suite vanity is a smaller piece again carrying exactly the same four operations. Loft rooms bring an en-suite and a very tight flight. Where kitchens turn over between tenancies the priority is a surface that survives a decade of being treated as a chopping board. A house divided into flats needs a vanity for each of them, and small repeated pieces are the one case where buying a whole slab makes sense. A repeated top is still drilled to the taps actually bought.

Where does the money go on a North Feltham worktop?

Waterfall ends are cut in sequence off the length either side of the top so the vein carries down the leg, and that sequence is gone the moment a piece has to be recut. That shape decides what is left on the slab when the kitchen has been cut, and what is left on the slab is where most vanity tops come from. One slab run, so the bathroom matches the kitchen. Material sits between £110 and £550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted line by line.

What needs to be ready before you come to North Feltham?

Boxing built in plasterboard on a light frame will take no useful fixing, so nothing bears on it and the stone is carried off the carcasses either side. A vanity has no depth to lose, so where a kitchen run would take a ten millimetre scribe without noticing, a shallow top cannot spare it. A stud wall takes a vanity only once there is timber behind it. Have the boxing in its final finished form before the template, along with the fixed unit, the basin and the tap. Some doors in a building need a consent letter and some need nothing at all, so the first question is which arrangement applies here rather than which one is usual. A let bathroom wants quartz for the same reason a let kitchen does: nothing to seal, and nothing an incoming tenant has to be briefed on. Marble on a vanity marks, and that is said before it is cut.

What happens when the route into a North Feltham kitchen is tighter than the worktop?

Doorways, the newel post and the handrail usually take the room away, rather than the stairs themselves. Every piece goes in by hand and stone does not bend, so the tightest turn on the route sets the longest piece. A join added to get stone into the room is a different thing from a join added because the slab ran out, and the quote says which is which. A front path with a gate and a turn or two adds handling before the door is even reached, and every handling movement is another chance to catch a corner. What the route really decides for a bathroom is the shelving and the window board, since long thin pieces are the ones that break when they are twisted round a turn. Long thin shelves break on the turn, not on the road.

Do you take the old worktop away?

If you want the old top kept for a garage or a utility, say so and it stays on site. Taking the old tops off and disposing of them is its own line on the quote rather than something folded into the stone price. The units are untouched. Only the top of them changes. Unrestricted does not mean empty, and a street that is clear at seven is usually full by nine. Where the vanity is fitted alongside a kitchen the van is standing anyway, which is a good part of why the two rooms are worth ordering together. A bathroom return visit is planned around the street, not the diary.

Can I have grooves instead of a separate drainer in North Feltham?

On a porous stone the grooved area is sealed with the rest, and it gets wet more than anything else. Which side of the bowl they go is about how you stand at the sink, and it is settled before cutting. Grooves are machined in the workshop at the same time as the bowl cut-out, because they cannot be done well in a kitchen. Communal heating pipework rises through the flat and is boxed in at floor and at ceiling, and none of it moves for a kitchen. What that does to a vanity is push the whole job into a narrow depth, because a bathroom takes the same stone as a kitchen in about two thirds of the width. Most vanity tops begin life as an offcut from another room.

Is the quote a fixed price or an estimate?

The quote is written from the template drawing. Before that it works from what you have described. What moves the figure after templating is a change you make: a different edge, an extra cut-out, a bigger sink chosen late. Ask for the lines rather than the total. One number for a kitchen tells you nothing you can check. A stack boxed diagonally across a corner leaves a triangle of dead space, and the top is cut to that triangle rather than to a square return. The boxed soil stack in the corner is the usual version of it upstairs, and a top that notches round one loses depth exactly where the basin wanted it. Nothing in a bathroom is square, and the top has to be.

Kareem did the countertops dur8ng my kitchen remodel, and I was so impressed that I had him back to do the laundry room as well, which tells you everything you need to know. He is an absolute gem. Shows up when he says he will (which, let’s be honest, is rarer than it should be), does beautifully work, and clearly takes real pride in what he does. The countertops look fantastic, and he even went above and beyond, using leftover quartz to create an extra counter in my bathroom. Genius. He’s kind, professional, reasonably priced, and just gets on with it. No fuss, no drama, just a job very well done. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend him and will absolutely be using him again if the need arises. Happy to answer any questions.
