Hounslow Heath kitchens
The buildings and streets around Hounslow Heath
Over the years the vanity tops we have done in Hounslow Heath have followed a few recognisable patterns, and knowing which one you are in saves a great deal of argument later. Ex-local maisonettes and houses with small square kitchens, standard 600mm base runs on two walls, and replacement tops on existing carcasses rather than full remodels. Extensions are rare. We would rather find the awkward corner now than on the day the stone arrives in Hounslow Heath, so the survey looks at everything.
The original units were screwed to timber grounds set into the wall, and where those were torn out the plaster was patched rather than replaced. For a vanity the length is rarely the argument, because it is the depth and what has to be drilled through it that set the piece. A vanity is priced as its own piece, not as a length of worktop.
The external wall is a concrete panel with a modest window, so the run under it sits in a shallow reveal with a hard cill. Dense concrete and blockwork hold a bracket firmly, so a wall-hung unit is secure, though nothing can be chased in to hide a pipe. A bathroom carved out of a bedroom keeps the bedroom window.
The houses and blocks behind these jobs are Postwar council-built house, 1960s maisonette and 1930s semi. The join count is decided by which of those the room sits in.
True everywhere
Bathroom worktops and vanity tops, in short
- Standard vanity depths are far narrower than a kitchen run, so most tops come out of offcut stock.
- Undermount basins are bonded and the aperture is polished, because the cut edge is visible from above.
- Tap holes are drilled to the tap you have actually bought, not to a standard spacing.
- We seat and seal the basin. A plumber connects the water and waste.

The place
Why Hounslow Heath is its own job
The reason we ask so much before quoting in Hounslow Heath is that a worktop cannot be trimmed to fit a surprise. Estate roads with parking courts, bollards and tight turning heads, and some blocks are walk-up with access along an external deck. These kitchens are almost never square and the walls are dense concrete, so expect to scribe both ends and drill rather than chase for an upstand. That is the sort of thing we come and look at in Hounslow Heath before we quote, not after you have committed.
The work
What bathroom worktops involves
Bathroom worktops covers the vanity top, the splash return, any shelving and a window board, each cut from the same stone and quoted as its own item. The vanity unit needs to be fixed, level and empty before the templater comes, because the top is drawn from the carcass rather than from the room. You are left with shelving and a window board that match the vanity, since all of it came off the same offcut on the same day.
A bathroom is one visit sitting between two plumbing visits, and the sequence matters at least as much as the stone does. Shelving for an alcove or a shower niche is scribed on three sides, and the exposed edge is polished to the same profile as the vanity. Rooms here are small and square, so the template is quick and the piece nests into offcut stock without difficulty. Seated and sealed by us, connected by your plumber.

The money
What it costs in Hounslow Heath
An undermount basin costs more than a countertop one, because the aperture has to be cut, polished and bonded rather than simply dropped through. An L has a return, and a return rarely nests neatly on a slab, so the yield question arrives earlier than it does on a straight run. Multiplying your worktop area by something between £110 and £550 gives you a material bill rather than a job cost, and the two are far enough apart to be worth keeping separate. You see what the window board and the shelving cost separately.

What Hounslow Heath asks for
A new extension slab is not automatically level, and that wants checking before templating rather than after the stone is cut. The specification tends to repeat across the building, so the holes are drilled to one tap rather than to five different ones. Where every bathroom matches, one slab covers the building.
Commercial rather than residential, and priced from the drawing rather than from the housing type. Residentially, worktop replacement, worktop installation and worktop splashbacks & upstands is what comes up here. The fabrication is identical.

On these streets the council tax banding sits at the bottom of the London range. An en-suite added to a bedroom is another vanity carrying the same work at a reduced size. A bathroom is measured once, whatever the street is built of.

Getting stone into a Hounslow Heath kitchen
Estate roads with parking courts, bollards and tight turning heads, and some blocks are walk-up with access along an external deck.
Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Questions
Questions we get asked in Hounslow Heath
If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.
Is Hounslow Heath far enough out to be a problem for you?
Yes. Hounslow Heath is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are TW4. It is worked on our west London run, along with the rest of Hounslow. With no scheme to work with there is nothing to book and nobody to ring, so the only levers left are an early arrival and a word with the neighbours. A vanity fit is a short visit with one or two pieces in it, so the van stands only for as long as it takes to walk them in. A vanity delivery is minutes at the kerb, not hours. Both visits happen in your kitchen, the template and the fit, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.
What do the kitchens in Hounslow Heath do to bathroom worktops?
Front doors off the deck open into a lobby barely wider than the door itself, and the turn out of it is a right angle. Bathrooms in this stock are compact, squarely built and take a short vanity that will come out of almost any offcut, which makes them among the cheapest bathroom tops we cut. Deep reveals turn a window board into a real piece of stone. Plaster thickness varies over the height of a wall, so the line at worktop height is not the line at skirting level, and the units decide which one matters. Bathrooms carry the same problems in a smaller room, and a smaller room leaves a vanity nowhere to absorb them. Half-tiled walls leave a line the top has to meet.
Do you have trouble getting long pieces into Hounslow Heath kitchens?
A height barrier on the car park entrance rules out a tail-lift van outright, and the stone then transfers to a trolley at the barrier itself. The exception is a double vanity, which is a kitchen length in bathroom width and behaves like a worktop from the tail lift onwards. The turn at the head of the stairs decides a double vanity. Unrestricted kerbside is straightforward as long as the space in front of the property is actually clear when the van arrives. Where the van cannot wait, the top, the shelves and the adhesive all come in on the first trip and the van goes. One trip in with the top, the shelves and the adhesive.
Would you call Hounslow Heath a bathroom worktops area?
Not particularly. It would be easy to say yes and leave it there. What the research on this patch actually lists is worktop replacement, worktop installation and worktop splashbacks & upstands. That is about what people have here rather than how it gets done. It is quoted, cut and fitted exactly the same way here as anywhere else on the patch. The junction between the original room and the extension is the point to watch, because the two floors rarely sit at the same height. Work of that kind brings en-suites with it, and an en-suite vanity is a smaller piece again carrying exactly the same four operations. A landlord specifying once is specifying tap holes once. Extension kitchens are usually specified long before they are buildable, so the run lengths on the drawing and the run lengths in the room are different numbers. Where several bathrooms are done in one building the tops come off one slab run, because two greys from two batches sit badly on adjoining floors. En-suites and family bathrooms rarely take the same depth.
What decides the price of a worktop in Hounslow Heath?
Corner sinks and corner hobs sit exactly where the joint wants to be, so on an L the cut-out positions get settled before the join positions do. A bathroom ordered with the kitchen is taken from the same slab run, so the two rooms match rather than nearly match. What the kitchen cannot use, the vanity usually can. Material runs £110 to £550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting each get their own line.
What do I need to sort out first?
Two walls each a degree out give an internal corner two degrees out, and the whole of that error lands in the mitre. The boxed soil stack in the corner is the usual version of it upstairs, and a top that notches round one loses depth exactly where the basin wanted it. A cloakroom under a stair slope limits the tap before the top. Have the boxing in its final finished form before the template, along with the fixed unit, the basin and the tap. Where the provider has set the specification the material choice was made once for a great many kitchens, and the useful work is meeting it exactly rather than proposing something else on the day. Who is paying decides the material here more than anywhere else, because a vanity is small enough that an expensive stone stops being an expensive decision. A void week is the easiest slot for a bathroom.
How much upkeep is a stone worktop?
Granite is porous to varying degrees, so it is sealed when we fit it and topped up over the life of the worktop. Upkeep is settled when the slab is chosen, since it belongs to the material rather than the fabrication. Where a top takes wine, oil and lemon most days, the non-porous materials ask least of the household. Deck access means a long open walkway from the lift or the stair to the front door, and that walk happens with the piece on edge in whatever weather there is. The complication is the service riser boxed into a corner: the top is notched round it with a radiused internal corner, never a square one, and the notch is machined at the works from a measurement taken at the finished face. Concrete walls take a bracket well and a chase badly.
What do you need from me for the sink and hob cut-outs?
A piece with a bowl and a hob cut into it is the fragile one, and it is handled accordingly. Undermount bowls are cut and polished in the workshop and dry-fitted to the stone on the bench before anything is loaded. A tap under a window board still needs room for its handle to lift, which is checked at the template. One leg of an L is nearly always the working run and the other little more than a landing space, but both are templated, cut and edged to the same standard. Where the kitchen swallows the whole slab there is no offcut worth having, and the vanity then has to be priced against material bought for itself. One template visit covers both rooms if both are ready.
Do you take on fitting-only work in Hounslow Heath?
The quote is itemised, so a job where you already hold the slab is the same job with the material line taken off it. Stone cut to somebody else’s drawing cannot usefully be re-cut to yours. Templating, fabrication and fitting are the same three lines whether the stone came from us or from you. Extension work runs late far more often than it runs early, and the worktop is close to the last thing in, so the date agreed at the start is rarely the date that happens. A house divided into flats needs a vanity for each of them, and small repeated pieces are the one case where buying a whole slab makes sense. Repeat work is where a vanity stops being an afterthought.
Do most Hounslow Heath kitchens take upstands or full-height splashbacks?
Upstand or splashback, the stone is cut from the same slab run as the worktop, at the same time, so the batch actually matches. An upstand covers the gap where the worktop meets a wall that is not flat, which is its real job. A maisonette puts the kitchen on one of two levels, so an internal staircase may be part of the route as well as the communal one. Bathrooms in these flats are compact and squarely built, and take a short vanity that comes out of almost any offcut. A boxed riser in the corner is the usual obstacle upstairs.
