Stone bar tops in Northwood

A bar top takes weight on its front edge all evening, so the overhang and what carries it matter more than the slab does.

Northwood kitchens

The buildings and streets around Northwood

Interwar detachedpostwar detachedgated modern developmentlarge Edwardian villa

We turn down very few bar tops in Northwood, but we do insist on seeing the kitchen first, and the reason for that is in the rooms themselves. Big detached houses running to double islands, bookmatched veined slabs, full-height stone splashback panels and boiling taps. Long lead times and premium specification are normal rather than exceptional. The drawing we work from is agreed with you first, so no one in Northwood finds out on fitting day that something was assumed.

The original plan put a larder and a back door on the same wall, and both leave awkward stubs once the room is opened up. What carries a bar top here is rarely a kitchen carcass, so the framing underneath gets looked at before anything is measured across the top of it. A bar top is a structural piece with a polished face on it.

The kitchen is usually a rear room extended into the garden, with the original external wall now standing inside the run. The side passage is usually wide enough for a full length to reach the room, so piece length is decided by the slab and by what the frame will carry rather than by the front door. Noggins first, brackets second, stone last.

The houses and blocks behind these jobs are Interwar detached, postwar detached, gated modern development and large Edwardian villa. The run length that is easy in one is a join in another.

True everywhere

Stone bar tops, in short

  • Anything past about 300mm of unsupported overhang gets steel or a corbel underneath.
  • The front edge is the one people touch, so it is profiled and polished on all exposed faces.
  • Quartz is the usual choice indoors; porcelain and sintered stone where drinks and citrus are constant.
  • A bar top is fitted level to itself, not to the floor, because floors in older buildings rarely are.

The place

Why Northwood is its own job

When we take on a kitchen in Northwood the first thing we work out is how the stone reaches the room it is going in. Private drives, electric gates and deep gravel. The difficulty is ground surface and gradient rather than parking, and some properties need track boards laid to reach the door. Bookmatching is the expectation here, so slab selection and a dry lay at the yard happen before a single cut is made. That is why the quote is itemised: you can see what the building is costing you and what the stone is.

The work

What bar tops involves

It suits a home bar in a converted cellar or a lounge, a breakfast counter on the end of a run, and a working trade bar with a sink and a drip tray underneath. Cut-outs for a bar sink, a drip tray or a socket through the surface are machined before anything leaves the workshop, so nothing is cut into a finished counter in the room. You end up with a surface chosen for what gets put down on it, so a wet glass standing all evening and a slice of lemon are not the things that spoil it.

Fitting a bar runs in three stages. The frame is checked and packed level, the support for the projection goes in, and only then does any stone come off the van. A bonded apron on the front is mitred and clamped on the bench, which is how a slab comes to read as a heavy counter without weighing what one would. A side passage usually lets a full length reach the room, so the piece is sized by the slab and by what the frame will carry rather than by the door. The projection is engineered, not hoped for.

The money

What it costs in Northwood

The seating count drives the length, the length drives the break, and a break placed clear of every stool is what the piece is really being priced for. The island is normally the largest single piece in the kitchen, which makes it the piece that sets the carry and sometimes the price. Colour and finish account for most of the distance between £110 and £550 per square metre. Everything decided after that is labour, and labour is quoted by the operation. Nothing about the support is folded into the stone rate.

What Northwood asks for

Commercial rather than residential, and priced from the drawing rather than from the housing type. Residentially, worktop design & quotation, worktop fabrication and worktop installation is what comes up here. The fabrication is identical.

period detached houses and villas

The carry, and what it rules out

Sign-in at the gate, a permit on the dash and a named contact are usually wanted before anything comes off the van. That matters more on a bar than on a run, because a join forced by the way in cannot be allowed to land in the unsupported part of the nose. A polished front edge is protected from the tail lift to the frame.

Where the drive is too short for the van the back end overhangs the footway, and a footway is a route people are using rather than spare space. The van takes the offcut away as well, and a bar with a sink in it produces one worth keeping rather than skipping. A bar top left on a pavement is a bar top with a chipped nose.

Access

Getting stone into a Northwood kitchen

Private drives, electric gates and deep gravel. The difficulty is ground surface and gradient rather than parking, and some properties need track boards laid to reach the door.

Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Questions

Questions we get asked in Northwood

If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.

Is Northwood far enough out to be a problem for you?

Yes. Northwood is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are HA6. It is worked on our west London run, along with the rest of Hillingdon. Having the van on the drive means the load can be staged, so the heavy pieces come off last and go straight in instead of standing outside. A bar fit runs longer than a worktop run, because the frame, the support and the stone are three stages and only the last of them is quick. What comes off the van first is whatever holds the top up. Both visits happen in your kitchen, the template and the fit, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.

Does the housing in Northwood change how bar tops works?

Houses of this period came with generous garages and utility rooms, so a second short run of stone is often part of the same job. These bars nearly always land at the open end of a knocked-through kitchen and dining room, which means the piece is read from both sides and both sides get the same edge treatment rather than one being left as a cut face. The riser gets notched around, not built away from. The returns into a breast recess are the tightest scribes in the room, and they are eased in rather than forced. On a bar that counts twice over, because the same obstruction has to be cleared by the stone above it and by the knees of whoever is sitting at it. The stone is cut to the obstruction as found.

How does the stone actually reach a kitchen in Northwood?

Where the parking court sits behind the block the carry crosses open ground and gets boarded, because loaded trolleys and block paving do not agree. The steel and the corbels travel that same route and go in first, so a bar is three separate carries into one room rather than a single delivery. Nothing is leaned on a stud wall while it waits to be fitted. A dropped kerb wide enough for a car is not always wide enough for a long-wheelbase van, and the width of the crossing decides the rest. That has to cover more than the unload, since the corbels, the flat bar and the fixings all come off the van well before the top does. The van stands for the frame as well as the top.

Would you call Northwood a bar tops area?

Not particularly. It would be easy to say yes and leave it there. What the research on this patch actually lists is worktop design & quotation, worktop fabrication and worktop installation. That is about what people have here rather than how it gets done. It is quoted, cut and fitted exactly the same way here as anywhere else on the patch. Extension budgets are usually well spent by the time the worktop is ordered, which is where the choice between quartz and a thinner sintered stone actually gets made. Where the same detail is repeating across several rooms the support gets standardised once and then cut to length, which is cheaper than drawing it each time. What gets leaned on gets specified for leaning. Rear and side-return extensions are where the islands appear, and an island is the piece that decides whether one slab does the kitchen or two. Harder use and stronger cleaning products push the answer towards porcelain or sintered stone, because a resin-bound surface is the one that shows what has been left standing on it. Batch work still gets its own template per room.

What am I actually paying for, line by line?

On a heavily veined stone the island and the run behind it are nested off the same area of slab so the movement relates across the room. Where the counter runs flush with the working surface instead of standing above it the whole thing becomes one plane, which looks better and doubles the unsupported span. A flush bar is one plane and twice the overhang problem. Material runs £110 to £550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting each get their own line.

Is there anything I have to finish before the template in Northwood?

An alcove is commonly wider at the back than at the front, so a piece cut to the opening drops in and then stands off the rear wall. A bar top is levelled to itself rather than to what it stands on, so the packing goes into the frame and the stools take up whatever the floor is doing. What carries the overhang is fixed to structure, not to lining. Confirm the finished height you want and whether the bar is seen from both sides, and tell us who is building the frame and when it will be complete. Where two people share the decision it helps to know early which of them is settling the edge profile and which is settling the budget, because it is rarely the same person for both. A home bar is discretionary work, so the edge profile, the corbel detail and the radius on the nose are worth settling properly rather than defaulting to whatever is quickest. A bar is permanent joinery with stone on top of it.

What happens if my units are not level?

A long top on units that were shimmed once and never checked is the commonest version of this, and it is cheap to fix beforehand. Variation past what packing can take up has to be corrected in the carcasses before we cut, because the template records the units as they stand. An island is where this usually shows, standing free with no wall to level against. The face of a breast is rarely flat, and a top returning onto it picks up that bow across the last few hundred millimetres of its length. Where the nose has to be carried past something fixed the support moves rather than the stone, since a corbel landing in the knee space is worse than no corbel at all. A corbel never lands where a knee goes.

What do you need from me for the sink and hob cut-outs?

We seat and seal the sink and hob on the day; water, waste, gas and electrics are for your plumber and electrician. A sit-on sink and an undermounted one are different cut-outs, so which it is gets settled before the template. A boiling tap needs a hole of its own and a cupboard below for the tank, so the units change too. Seating overhangs past roughly 300mm will not carry on the carcass alone, so flat steel bar or a plywood substrate has to be built into the units first. The seating side is the part that decides the piece, because a stool at the open end puts a load on a corner that a wall would otherwise have been carrying. Knee room is measured from the frame, not from the nose.

How much upkeep is a stone worktop?

Upkeep is settled when the slab is chosen, since it belongs to the material rather than the fabrication. Where a top takes wine, oil and lemon most days, the non-porous materials ask least of the household. Granite is porous to varying degrees, so it is sealed when we fit it and topped up over the life of the worktop. Solid brick with a render coat is firm to work against and out of plumb, so the scribe at worktop height is different from the one at plinth level. A bar here usually appears at the open end of a knocked-through kitchen and dining room, where it is read from both sides and both sides have to be finished to the same standard. Two tiers where a single piece will not reach.

When do I pay for a Northwood worktop?

The edge profile is its own line, so a shaped edge and a square one are two different figures. Two kitchens the same length can be far apart, because material, edge and cut-outs move independently of size. Every run, cut-out, edge, join and groove set is a line, which is what makes it comparable with anyone else’s. Old breasts carry a bulge low down where the original opening was closed up, and the units stand off it before the stone is measured at all. Anything that puts a notch in a bar takes material out of the piece at the point people lean on it, so the notch and the support are drawn together or not at all. The bar is packed level off the frame, not off the floor.
