On a street with no restrictions the constraint is other residents rather than a warden, so it is worth putting a cone or a car out early. The flat entrance door and the internal doorways are usually tighter than the communal stairs, which is the opposite of what most people assume. The other constraint is the hall: a piece has to come through the front door, round the newel at the foot of the stairs and through a doorway into the back kitchen, so we size the pieces to the tightest turn on that route before we nest anything, which sometimes means splitting a run that would otherwise have gone in whole. The bench proves it before the van moves. Measure hall width at the stair balustrade, not the skirting - that projection is what actually stops a 900mm island top.

Wider streets and larger front gardens make kerbside easier, and a good proportion of these houses have a genuine side gate with a clear 900mm-plus alley to the garden, which is the route to take. Where there is no side access the hall is generous but the stair balustrade projects, so measure clear width at the balustrade not at the skirting. Garden routes carry their own hazards: a drain cover, a step up to a patio, wet decking, or a lawn that will not take a loaded trolley. So the nesting is worked to the measured route first and to the slab second. The drawing carries that decision through to the saw.

A junction between an original floor and a later extension slab is almost never at the same level, so units carrying a run across it need packing first. Cut it square where it should be radiused and the piece will fail on the lift, not in the kitchen. The drawing decides it, not the fitter. The sink and hob need to be on site and the run layout fixed before we start cutting, because moving a hob after the join position is set means recutting the whole piece. An owner living in the house makes the decisions and lives with them, so the specification tends to go towards the material rather than towards the lowest total. The workshop works from the approved drawing, so whoever signs it off is signing off the join positions too. The approved drawing is the instruction.
