Permit hours are what matters, not the permit itself, because a bay that frees up at six in the evening is no use for a template at ten. It rarely changes what we cut, but it does change how the pieces are stacked and strapped for the run out. It is decided in the yard, not at the kerb. Where the side return has been filled in, the old external wall is now an internal one and still carries its render, its gutter line and its old fixings. Pieces are sized to the tightest turn on the route before anything is nested to the slab. The bench proves it before the van moves. The stock repeats, so keep the templates - the same joint layout that worked three doors down will almost certainly work again.

Uniform terraces with small front gardens, low walls and a gate, and permit bays that fill by evening, so morning slots are much easier. Side returns are almost always built out, so there is no alley left and the hall is the route - about 1m wide with the stair immediately on the right and a doorway into the kitchen at the end. Stone goes up on edge, and it is the half-landing turn rather than the flight itself that sets the maximum piece. So the nesting is worked to the measured route first and to the slab second. Once the cut-outs are machined there is no going back on it.

Where the return runs into a wall that is out of square, the corner is templated as the angle it really is rather than as ninety degrees. Pieces are dry-assembled on the bench before dispatch so the corners are known to close before they leave the workshop. Every join sits over a gable. Material is £110-£550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.

A junction between an original floor and a later extension slab is almost never at the same level, so units carrying a run across it need packing first. Internal corners are machined with a radius and polished, and kept well clear of any join or cut-out. Machined to the real line. The sink and hob need to be on site and the run layout fixed before we start cutting, because moving a hob after the join position is set means recutting the whole piece. An owner living in the house makes the decisions and lives with them, so the specification tends to go towards the material rather than towards the lowest total. The workshop works from the approved drawing, so whoever signs it off is signing off the join positions too. Dry-assembled before it leaves.
