Stone bar tops in Roe Green

A bar top takes weight on its front edge all evening, so the overhang and what carries it matter more than the slab does.

The buildings and streets around Roe Green

Stone bar top work in Roe Green lives or dies on the awkward detail nobody mentions on the phone, and that detail is almost always something about the room. The garden village cottages have genuinely small kitchens with low ceilings and original window positions that cannot be moved, so runs are short at 2.1m to 2.7m and every centimetre of return matters. Owners tend to spend on a small area of good material rather than on quantity, and appliance choice is limited by the depth available. Book the design and quotation visit, and someone will be at your Roe Green address with a tape, the colour range and no obligation attached.

A larder, a butler sink and a dresser run put more edges and more cut-outs into the job than the floor area suggests. Every face of a bar is on show from a stool, so the front edge and the underside of the nose are profiled and polished rather than left as the saw finished them. A bar top is judged from a stool, not from the doorway.

Lime plaster over rubble moves in and out enough that a single long panel will show a gap somewhere along its length. A deep apron on the front makes the piece read heavier from a seat, and it is mitred and bonded on the bench rather than built up in the room. Deep skirtings push the frame forward and the top covers it.

The archetypes on this patch are 1918 garden village cottage, 1930s semi on the fringe and post-war infill. The floor datum is the thing that changes most between them.

True everywhere

Stone bar tops, in short

  • Anything past about 300mm of unsupported overhang gets steel or a corbel underneath.
  • The front edge is the one people touch, so it is profiled and polished on all exposed faces.
  • Quartz is the usual choice indoors; porcelain and sintered stone where drinks and citrus are constant.
  • A bar top is fitted level to itself, not to the floor, because floors in older buildings rarely are.

The place

Why Roe Green is its own job

Most of the work of a fit in Roe Green happens before the van is loaded, in what we have already checked and allowed for. Narrow lanes, grass verges and shared front paths through the conservation area, with limited parking and no driveways on the original cottages, so the carry is on foot across grass and paving. Short runs in a conservation cottage leave no room for error, so a template of the actual opening beats any drawing of nominal unit widths. The visit that sorts all this out is free, and there is nothing to pay until we template.

The work

What bar tops involves

A stone bar top covers the surface and what carries it: the top itself, the edge profile on every face that shows, and the steel or corbels holding the projection up. On the day the frame is checked and packed, the support goes in, and the stone is set and sealed last, which is why a bar is booked as a day rather than as a delivery. You end up with a front edge that takes people leaning on it all evening without the top shifting, because the load was worked out before the stone was ordered.

Stone bar tops divide into two kinds of work: a home bar built into a room somebody lives in, and a trade counter that has to survive a service every night. Fixings passing through a frame into a party wall or anything structural are agreed with whoever owns that wall before a hole is drilled. Lengths here run past what a slab gives, so the break is placed over support and clear of the seats before the piece is nested. Every face somebody can see is finished.

The money

What it costs in Roe Green

Two counters of the same length price very differently depending on how far the front edge reaches, because past a certain point the carcass stops carrying it and steel starts. Two facing runs mean two sets of edges and two scribes in a small span, which is why a compact galley rarely prices as cheaply as its area suggests. The rate is £110 to £550 per square metre supply only, though what you buy is slabs rather than square metres, which is why the material line follows the yield and not the tape. Edge work is counted by the face, and a bar has more of them.

The carry, and what it rules out

A narrow entrance hall with a turn into the back of the house caps the longest piece we can physically get in, whatever the run itself measures. A top with a bonded apron on the front arrives deeper than a worktop and behaves like a beam, so there is no easing it round a turn at all. The nose is the corner that gets caught, so it travels padded.

What Roe Green asks for

This one sits outside the domestic mix entirely. That mix, locally, is worktop templating, worktop replacement and worktop design & quotation. Commercial pieces are drawn, cut and fitted exactly as a kitchen would be.

The shape of the run

The catch with a galley is that both runs are seen end-on from the doorway, so any difference in overhang between the two reads immediately. Where the counter runs flush with the working surface instead of standing above it the whole thing becomes one plane, which looks better and doubles the unsupported span. Clear length between the returns sets the stool count.

Getting stone into a Roe Green kitchen

Narrow lanes, grass verges and shared front paths through the conservation area, with limited parking and no driveways on the original cottages, so the carry is on foot across grass and paving.

Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Questions

Questions we get asked in Roe Green

If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.

Is Roe Green on your patch?

Yes. Roe Green is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are NW9. It is worked on our north west London run, along with the rest of Brent. Where parking runs down both sides the road is left as a single lane, and a van standing in it has to be somewhere it does not stop a bin lorry. A bar fit runs longer than a worktop run, because the frame, the support and the stone are three stages and only the last of them is quick. A red route buys minutes and a bar top needs hours. Both visits happen in your kitchen, the template and the fit, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.

Does the housing in Roe Green change how bar tops works?

A range or an Aga in an original recess is usually immovable, so the run is designed around it and the clearances come from the appliance. There is normally room here for a genuine bar rather than a seating overhang, which means a rear counter, a small sink and a run of shelving being drawn as one piece of joinery with the stone reading across all of it. The break sits over support and clear of every seat. A window board sitting below finished worktop height leaves two choices, drop the top under it or notch the stone around it, and both cost more than a straight run. On a bar that counts twice over, because the same obstruction has to be cleared by the stone above it and by the knees of whoever is sitting at it. What carries the overhang is fixed to structure, not to lining.

How does the stone actually reach a kitchen in Roe Green?

Door width, hall width and the diagonal at the turn are three separate measurements, and it is the diagonal that catches people out. That matters more on a bar than on a run, because a join forced by the way in cannot be allowed to land in the unsupported part of the nose. Steel for the overhang is carried in and fixed before the stone. With no scheme to work with there is nothing to book and nobody to ring, so the only levers left are an early arrival and a word with the neighbours. A trade bar is fitted around opening times, so the window the van has and the window the room has are rarely the same window. Packaging and offcuts go back the way the top came in.

Do you get much bar tops work in Roe Green?

Honestly, no, though it would be easy to claim otherwise. What the research on this patch actually lists is worktop templating, worktop replacement and worktop design & quotation. That says something about the housing round here, not about the work. Quote, cut and fit are the same here as on any other part of the patch. Where a family has been living around a building site for months, the finish date carries more weight than any other part of the specification. A bar is nearly always the last thing added to a project, so it is templated on a visit of its own once the joinery around it has stopped moving. Drinks left standing decide the material more than looks do. An open-plan extension puts the worktop in the middle of the living space, so it is looked at from the sofa as well as worked on. Where the same detail is repeating across several rooms the support gets standardised once and then cut to length, which is cheaper than drawing it each time. A bar is the piece most likely to be added after the kitchen.

What am I actually paying for, line by line?

Galley runs are usually short enough to come out of a single slab, so the material band you choose does more to the total than the room shape does. A bar laid over that is a second level rather than a wider one, so it wants a spine underneath it and a settled detail where the two heights meet. A bar on an end takes the corner load a wall used to take. Reckon on £110 to £550 per square metre for the material supply only, with templating, fabrication and fitting itemised separately.

Is there anything I have to finish before the template in Roe Green?

A cill projecting forward of the plaster line pushes the back edge out, and the units then stand off the wall by that amount for the whole length. A bar top is levelled to itself rather than to what it stands on, so the packing goes into the frame and the stools take up whatever the floor is doing. A corbel never lands where a knee goes. Send the bar layout with the rear counter and any sink marked, the seating side and stool count, and the edge profile you want on the front. The decision usually gets made standing in the room rather than at a desk, which is why a slab is worth viewing whole instead of choosing from a sample card. A home bar is discretionary work, so the edge profile, the corbel detail and the radius on the nose are worth settling properly rather than defaulting to whatever is quickest. Nothing structural is drilled on an assumption.

How much upkeep is a stone worktop?

Quartz carries resin, so a hot pan wants a trivet, while granite and sintered stone will take one without complaint. Granite is porous to varying degrees, so it is sealed when we fit it and topped up over the life of the worktop. Where a top takes wine, oil and lemon most days, the non-porous materials ask least of the household. Ceiling beams cross the room at a height that decides where a piece can be stood on edge and where it cannot. Lengths run past what a single slab gives, so a break is designed in from the start, placed over support and kept clear of every stool position before anything is nested. A breakfast counter on an end is still an overhang problem.

What is actually on a Roe Green worktop quote?

The design and quotation visit is free and carries no obligation, so a figure exists before any commitment. Ask for the lines rather than the total. One number for a kitchen tells you nothing you can check. Material is quoted supply only and templating, fabrication and fitting sit on their own lines, so it is visible which part is stone and which is labour. Where the sill lands inside the height an upstand would occupy there is no upstand, and the stone either dies into the reveal or stops short of it. Where the nose has to be carried past something fixed the support moves rather than the stone, since a corbel landing in the knee space is worse than no corbel at all. The bar is packed level off the frame, not off the floor.

Will I be able to see the joins?

A join sits over a cabinet gable. It never spans a gap and never runs through a cut-out. Join count and position are settled from the template drawing rather than improvised on the fitting day. Each join is an item on the drawing, so the layout and the figure move together. The walkway between the two runs is fixed by the units either side, so any overhang added to one worktop comes straight off the space somebody has to stand in. The seating side is the part that decides the piece, because a stool at the open end puts a load on a corner that a wall would otherwise have been carrying. Nothing sits over a join that somebody leans on.

How do you cut out for an undermounted sink?

A boiling tap needs a hole of its own and a cupboard below for the tank, so the units change too. Where the hob lands is set out against the units and the wall behind, not off the kitchen plan. The tap hole is drilled in the workshop too, and its position depends on how far the tap has to swing. Both runs are in view at the same time, so the two pieces are taken off the same area of slab and the veining is set to run the same way on each side. A separate bar in the same room still takes its services from the same run, so the waste, the socket and the water are set out with the kitchen even though the joinery is not. The overhang is drawn before the layout is signed off.
