Shacklewell kitchens

What the kitchens here are actually like

Victorian terracepost-war estateabove-shop flatwarehouse conversion

A hundred and forty years of alterations sit under the current kitchen, and the worktop is what has to sit flat on top of all of it. The units stay and only the surface changes, so the job is a day, and what makes it a difficult day is the building. A single day, planned properly.

Narrow Victorian terraces largely in flats with rear-addition kitchens of 2.8-3m, plus estate flats with fixed galleys. A handful of converted industrial buildings on the fringes provide the only open-plan runs in the area.

Boxed in by the A10 red route on one side and filtered residential streets on the other, so the legal approach is usually a loop rather than a straight line. Terrace front doors open onto a narrow hall with the stair starting almost immediately, which limits the swing. When the stair starts within a metre of the front door there is no room to pivot, so pieces have to be short enough to turn on the spot rather than swung round the newel.

The addition wall is half a brick thick in places and has usually had a damp course injected and been re-plastered, which leaves it neither flat nor consistent. Lath-and-plaster and bowed brickwork mean we template for scribes rather than straight cuts, and each piece is offered up and eased in rather than dropped straight down. Units kept, surface changed, one day.

The stock behind these kitchens runs to Victorian terrace, post-war estate, above-shop flat and warehouse conversion. Which of those you have decides most of what follows.

True everywhere

Worktop replacement, in short

  • The units stay. Only the surface changes.
  • Old tops come out in the morning, new stone is down and sealed the same day.
  • A plumber disconnects the tap and waste before we arrive and reconnects at the end of the day.
  • The carcasses have to be sound: stone is far heavier than laminate.

The shape of the run

Galley runs are usually short enough to come out of a single slab, so the material band you choose does more to the total than the room shape does. Going from a 38mm laminate to 20mm or 30mm stone drops the surface, which shows against tiles, a window board and any freestanding appliance. Height change is checked before we cut.

What gets asked for here

Of everything we do around here, this is the one that comes up most, with worktop installation and worktop splashbacks & upstands behind it.

Getting stone into a Shacklewell kitchen

Boxed in by the A10 red route on one side and filtered residential streets on the other, so the legal approach is usually a loop rather than a straight line. Terrace front doors open onto a narrow hall with the stair starting almost immediately, which limits the swing.

Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Questions

Worktop replacement in Shacklewell

If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.

Do you cover Shacklewell?

Yes. Shacklewell is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are E8. It is worked on our east London run, along with the rest of Hackney. Where the frontage is a clearway the unload happens away from the door and the carry gets longer, which is a crew and time question rather than a stone one. Waste is the part people forget: the old laminate or tired granite has to be walked back to the van and it does not get lighter. Old tops out and new stone in, both through the same gap. We template in your kitchen and fit in your kitchen, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.

Does the housing in Shacklewell change how worktop replacement works?

The addition wall is half a brick thick in places and has usually had a damp course injected and been re-plastered, which leaves it neither flat nor consistent. What the old top has been hiding is usually a floor that settled towards the back and units that were never fixed back to the wall. Units kept, surface changed, one day. When the stair starts within a metre of the front door there is no room to pivot, so pieces have to be short enough to turn on the spot rather than swung round the newel.

How does the stone actually reach a kitchen in Shacklewell?

Boxed in by the A10 red route on one side and filtered residential streets on the other, so the legal approach is usually a loop rather than a straight line. Terrace front doors open onto a narrow hall with the stair starting almost immediately, which limits the swing. A walk-up with winders at every half-landing means the piece is rested and re-gripped on the way, so the crew size goes up before the piece size comes down. With no room to turn, the old top gets cut up in the kitchen instead, which is dusty work and needs the room emptied first. The strip-out is planned around it.

Is Shacklewell mostly worktop replacement work for you?

Yes. On the research for this patch it is the first of the three jobs listed, ahead of worktop installation and worktop splashbacks & upstands. Rear and side-return extensions are where the islands appear, and an island is the piece that decides whether one slab does the kitchen or two. The units stay and only the surface changes, so the whole job is one day rather than a kitchen refit. Sound carcasses or it does not go ahead. A new extension slab is not automatically level, and that wants checking before templating rather than after the stone is cut. Old tops out in the morning, new stone down and sealed the same afternoon. A day, not a project.

Why do two Shacklewell kitchens the same size price differently?

Two parallel runs with a walkway between them is the most efficient shape there is on a slab, because both pieces nest as straight lengths with almost no waste. The existing layout is being kept, so the question is whether the old carcasses will take stone in that shape without more support. The units stay, the surface changes. Material is £110-£550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.

What has to be finished before you can template?

Boxing is rarely the same depth at worktop height as it is at floor level, so measuring it low down is the usual reason a top will not sit back. This is the commonest reason a replacement turns out to need more than a straight swap. It is the usual surprise, and it is a known one. Have a plumber booked to disconnect the sink, tap and waste first thing and reconnect after we have gone, and clear the hallway and stairs completely so we can carry slabs through the house. Consent for the work sits with the freeholder or the managing body, and getting it in writing first avoids a crew arriving to a locked door. If the carcasses are tired the honest answer is that stone will find that out, and it is better said before than after. Units kept, surface changed.
