Very little conventional family housing - most stone work here is in apartments over commercial floors, chambers-style flats, and back-of-house kitchens and pantries in club and office buildings. Security zones around Whitehall and the royal parks bring road closures and vehicle checks, and ceremonial events shut the area at short notice. Buildings are listed with managed access, and deliveries generally go through a rear service entrance with a signed-in trolley route. Most of this is commercial-adjacent work, so surfaces need to take heat and heavy use in a small area - a hard sintered surface beats a resin quartz next to a commercial hob. The awkward conversation belongs at your kitchen table at the quote stage, not over a half-fitted worktop.

The fitting workmanship carries the same five year guarantee as a kitchen worktop, and the support under the front edge is covered by it as much as the stone above is. The top is machined at the works with the front edge, the ends and the underside all profiled and polished, since every one of those faces is at eye level from a stool. You end up with knee room somebody can genuinely sit in, since the support was set out to the stool positions rather than screwed on wherever it was convenient.
The piece is open on the front, the ends and the underside, which is the reverse of a kitchen run that hides three of its four edges against something. A sharp arris on a leaning edge chips, so the front is eased with a radius or a chamfer instead of being left as a square corner. The back is scribed to whatever the plaster does, and the front is set out from a line of its own. Supported first, polished second, fitted last.

The carry, and what it rules out
Where an event closes the road entirely, the van cannot be moved once it is in, which is a different problem from not being able to park at all. Where the clock is running the frame is levelled and the steel is in before the top ever leaves the tail lift. Fitting a bar top is slower than carrying one.

Do you actually work in St James's, or just list it?

A garage floor slopes and the frame takes that up. Two walls each a degree out give an internal corner two degrees out, and the whole of that error lands in the mitre. On a bar that counts twice over, because the same obstruction has to be cleared by the stone above it and by the knees of whoever is sitting at it. Nothing under the nose is allowed to be in the way.
What do you check about the route into a St James's property?
Everything comes through the front door and down the hall, so the tightest point on the route is usually the newel post at the foot of the stairs. That matters more on a bar than on a run, because a join forced by the way in cannot be allowed to land in the unsupported part of the nose. A bonded apron makes the piece deeper than the doorway expects. A timed school street shuts the road either side of the school day, so the van goes in between those two windows or it does not go in. Why do two St James's kitchens the same size price differently?
An aisle under a metre stops being a working space the moment two people are in it, and the depth of the tops either side is what decides whether that happens. A bar laid over that is a second level rather than a wider one, so it wants a spine underneath it and a settled detail where the two heights meet. What has to be finished before you can template?
A scribe has a working limit, and past twenty millimetres or so the back edge starts eating depth the run cannot spare. Where the nose has to be carried past something fixed the support moves rather than the stone, since a corbel landing in the knee space is worse than no corbel at all. The back of a bar is seen, so the back is finished. Send the length you want, the number of stools, and photographs walking from the pavement through to the room, including the cellar stair if the bar is going down there. A street with houses in single occupation next to the same houses cut into flats produces two completely different jobs from the same elevation. A home bar is discretionary work, so the edge profile, the corbel detail and the radius on the nose are worth settling properly rather than defaulting to whatever is quickest. Who signs off the steel is settled before it is ordered.
What happens if a piece will not go up the stairs?
A join added to get stone into the room is a different thing from a join added because the slab ran out, and the quote says which is which. The lift, if there is one, is measured on the diagonal, because that is the dimension a long piece actually uses. The alternative to a join is a shorter run, which is usually the wrong thing to trade away. A narrow entrance hall with a turn into the back of the house caps the longest piece we can physically get in, whatever the run itself measures. A top with a bonded apron on the front arrives deeper than a worktop and behaves like a beam, so there is no easing it round a turn at all. The frame is built in the room; only the top has to travel.
Do you check the carcasses before templating in St James's?
Small variation is taken up by packing under the top on the fitting day. If the carcasses are corrected, the template is taken again, since a drawing off units that then moved is worthless. A sloping floor is not the problem. The plane the unit tops finish in is. Walls that bow along their length are the normal condition rather than the exception, and a straight-cut back edge will show a shadow gap at one end and touch at the other. Anything that puts a notch in a bar takes material out of the piece at the point people lean on it, so the notch and the support are drawn together or not at all. Noggins go into a stud wall before a bar is fixed to it.
What is not included in the quoted figure?
Ask for the lines rather than the total. One number for a kitchen tells you nothing you can check. What moves the figure after templating is a change you make: a different edge, an extra cut-out, a bigger sink chosen late. The design and quotation visit is free and carries no obligation, so a figure exists before any commitment. A run can measure dead right at both ends and still belly out in the middle, which only appears once the template plots the intermediate points. A counter fixed back to lightweight framing takes a sideways push as well as a downward load, and framing built for neither gets noggins let into it first. A sloping floor is a problem for the stools, not the top.
What if a piece cracks while it is being carried in?
Damage found on the bench never leaves the workshop, and damage on the carry is remade under the same cover. Most breakages happen on the carry, which is why the route is walked and measured before anything comes off the van. Door frames and the stair route are protected too, since most contact happens on the way in. Door width, hall width and the diagonal at the turn are three separate measurements, and it is the diagonal that catches people out. Where the bar is going into a cellar the pieces travel downward rather than up, and carrying stone down a flight gives a crew less control over it, not more. Cellar bars go down a flight, which is the harder direction.
