Stone bar tops in Mayfair

A bar top takes weight on its front edge all evening, so the overhang and what carries it matter more than the slab does.

People ring us about stone bar top work in Mayfair at the point where they have a kitchen in mind and no idea what their own walls are going to do to it. Two distinct jobs - grand flats where the kitchen is a small back-of-house room the owners never intended to be seen, and lateral conversions where two flats have been knocked together and the kitchen becomes a designed room with book-matched marble, a 3m island and a hidden prep pantry behind it. Specs come from an interior designer with a drawing, not from the client. The point of the visit is that you stop guessing and get a number you can hold us to.

A curved bay or a canted corner turns up more often here than people expect, and a curve is templated and cut, never bent. The material question follows from what actually gets put down on it, which is citrus, ice and wet glasses rather than hot pans and chopping boards. A bar top is fitted last and touched first.

Windows are low and wide with deep timber cills and leaded lights, so a run under one meets joinery rather than plaster. Lengths run past what a single slab gives, so a break is designed in from the start, placed over support and kept clear of every stool position before anything is nested. Deep skirtings push the frame forward and the top covers it.

The kitchens we see here sit in Georgian townhouse, listed mansion flat, lateral apartment conversion and mews house. Each of those puts the services somewhere else, and the cut-outs follow.

True everywhere

Stone bar tops, in short

  • Anything past about 300mm of unsupported overhang gets steel or a corbel underneath.
  • The front edge is the one people touch, so it is profiled and polished on all exposed faces.
  • Quartz is the usual choice indoors; porcelain and sintered stone where drinks and citrus are constant.
  • A bar top is fitted level to itself, not to the floor, because floors in older buildings rarely are.

The place

Why Mayfair is its own job

Every area has its own complications, and in Mayfair these are the ones that decide the day. Estate freeholders impose alteration consents and works hours, the buildings are listed so nothing gets fixed to original fabric without approval, and the lifts in period blocks are small original cars that will not take a slab. Deliveries are frequently routed through the mews at the back on a permit. Marble here is specified by the designer and it stains - get the client to sign off on sealing and expected patina before you fabricate, because the complaint always comes later. We sort it out with a template, then the quote says what sorting it out costs.

The work

What bar tops involves

A stone bar top covers the surface and what carries it: the top itself, the edge profile on every face that shows, and the steel or corbels holding the projection up. Where the front edge reaches past what the frame will carry, flat steel is let in flush with the bearing face or corbels are fixed to structure, and which of the two is agreed with you rather than decided on the morning. You are left with every visible face finished to one standard, the underside of the front edge included, which is the face a seated person looks straight at.

A bar is drawn outward from the seat, because where somebody sits fixes the height, the knee room and how far the front edge has to reach. Corbels are set out to the stool positions so that nobody has one arriving between their knees, and they are fixed to structure rather than to a lining board. Lengths here run past what a slab gives, so the break is placed over support and clear of the seats before the piece is nested. The projection is engineered, not hoped for.

The money

What it costs in Mayfair

A bar is quoted as joinery and stone together, so the frame, the support and the top each appear on the sheet instead of being folded into a rate for the surface. The island is normally the largest single piece in the kitchen, which makes it the piece that sets the carry and sometimes the price. If you are holding two quotes, the £110 to £550 supply rate is the part they will agree on. Compare the join count, the edge profile and what the fitting line covers. Nothing about the support is folded into the stone rate.

What Mayfair asks for

This is commercial work rather than something the housing here generates. Domestically these streets ask for worktop design & quotation, worktop fabrication and worktop templating. It runs through the same template, the same bench and the same fitters.

period detached houses and villas

Mayfair in the housing figures

In this corner of the borough, this is high-band housing on the council tax measure. Stair turns and landing widths decide the piece list. Where the same detail repeats across several rooms the support is standardised once and cut to length afterwards. The projection is the first line on the drawing.

period detached houses and villas

The carry, and what it rules out

Estate roads inside a controlled zone are sometimes managed privately rather than by the council, which changes who has to be asked. A bar fit runs longer than a worktop run, because the frame, the support and the stone are three stages and only the last of them is quick. The stone comes off last because it goes down last.

Getting stone into a Mayfair kitchen

Estate freeholders impose alteration consents and works hours, the buildings are listed so nothing gets fixed to original fabric without approval, and the lifts in period blocks are small original cars that will not take a slab. Deliveries are frequently routed through the mews at the back on a permit.

Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Questions

Questions we get asked in Mayfair

If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.

Is Mayfair on your patch?

Yes. Mayfair is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are W1J, W1K, W1S. It is worked on our central London run, along with the rest of Westminster. A controlled parking zone means either a visitor permit sorted in advance or a suspended bay, and a suspension is applied for days ahead rather than on the morning. That has to cover more than the unload, since the corbels, the flat bar and the fixings all come off the van well before the top does. A short unload is still a long fit on a bar. We template in your kitchen and fit in your kitchen, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.

Why would bar tops in Mayfair be any different from anywhere else?

Internal walls are lath and plaster on studs with heavy framing behind, so a fixing finds either nothing at all or something very solid. There is normally room here for a genuine bar rather than a seating overhang, which means a rear counter, a small sink and a run of shelving being drawn as one piece of joinery with the stone reading across all of it. Beer lines and a glasswasher change what goes under the top. The returns into a breast recess are the tightest scribes in the room, and they are eased in rather than forced. On a bar that counts twice over, because the same obstruction has to be cleared by the stone above it and by the knees of whoever is sitting at it. Anything that flexes under the nose shows up at the join.

What is the carry like in Mayfair?

Handrails, mirrors and a sloping ceiling panel all eat into the usable diagonal, and none of them appear on a lift specification sheet. That matters more on a bar than on a run, because a join forced by the way in cannot be allowed to land in the unsupported part of the nose. The route is measured to the deepest part of the piece. Permit hours are what matters, not the permit itself, because a bay that frees up at six in the evening is no use for a template at ten. A trade bar is fitted around opening times, so the window the van has and the window the room has are rarely the same window. Permits are sorted before a corbel is drilled.

Do you get much bar tops work in Mayfair?

Not to any real extent, and it would be easy to imply it was. What the research on this patch actually lists is worktop design & quotation, worktop fabrication and worktop templating. It describes the kitchens on this patch, not the work that goes into them. Same quoting, same cutting, same fitting as anywhere else on the patch. Several units in one building are fitted out to the same drawing, so an error on that drawing is an error repeated in every flat. A bar is nearly always the last thing added to a project, so it is templated on a visit of its own once the joinery around it has stopped moving. What gets leaned on gets specified for leaning. A converted flat is measured off the original house, so no two units in the same building have quite the same kitchen run. Where the same detail is repeating across several rooms the support gets standardised once and then cut to length, which is cheaper than drawing it each time. Batch work still gets its own template per room.

Where does the money go on a Mayfair worktop?

Where an overhang is too deep for steel on its own the choice is a leg at the end or a bracket underneath, and a bracket that lands where a knee goes is worse than no bracket at all. A bar laid over that is a second level rather than a wider one, so it wants a spine underneath it and a settled detail where the two heights meet. A raised tier is a second piece, priced and drawn as one. Material sits between £110 and £550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted line by line.

What needs to be ready before you come to Mayfair?

An alcove is commonly wider at the back than at the front, so a piece cut to the opening drops in and then stands off the rear wall. A bar top is levelled to itself rather than to what it stands on, so the packing goes into the frame and the stools take up whatever the floor is doing. A column in the middle of a bar is a decision, not a surprise. Send the bar layout with the rear counter and any sink marked, the seating side and stool count, and the edge profile you want on the front. Owner-occupied kitchens are usually being done once, which is why the edge profile, the vein direction and where a join falls are worth the conversation. A home bar is discretionary work, so the edge profile, the corbel detail and the radius on the nose are worth settling properly rather than defaulting to whatever is quickest. Stools change; the nose does not.

Can I have grooves instead of a separate drainer in Mayfair?

They are cut with a fall towards the bowl, which is why they cannot be added on site later. On a porous stone the grooved area is sealed with the rest, and it gets wet more than anything else. Grooves are machined in the workshop at the same time as the bowl cut-out, because they cannot be done well in a kitchen. Ceilings are high enough that the wall units sit low against them, which leaves a tall band of wall above the worktop doing nothing. A bar top put into a room like that is an overhang question first, because the nose has to carry people leaning on it long after the slab has stopped being interesting. The stone follows the frame, and the frame follows the stools.

Will I have to look after it? What does a Mayfair worktop need?

Marble is the one people underestimate. It is porous, like granite, and wants sealing. Granite is porous to varying degrees, so it is sealed when we fit it and topped up over the life of the worktop. Where a top takes wine, oil and lemon most days, the non-porous materials ask least of the household. Floors are boards over joists with a solid floor only in the service rooms, and the two meet somewhere in the middle of the kitchen. There is normally room here for a genuine bar rather than a seating overhang, which means a rear counter, a small sink and a run of shelving all drawn as one piece of joinery. The break sits over support and clear of every seat.

How many visits does a Mayfair worktop take?

The template is taken in your kitchen after the units are in and fixed, never before. Between the template and the fit the slab is nested, cut, mitred and dry-assembled on the bench, which is work you never see and is most of the wait. The fitting itself is one visit: a plain run is a morning, an island with splashbacks takes most of the day. Big rooms hide their falls, and the difference from one corner of a five metre floor to the other is measured in tens of millimetres. None of that stops a bar being fitted level, but it does mean the top is set to a datum of its own and packed off the frame rather than followed down to the floor. Where the weight lands is worked out before the piece is cut.

What if a worktop will not physically fit through the building?

Splitting a run costs a join, and that is the price of getting stone into the room at all. Doorways, the newel post and the handrail usually take the room away, rather than the stairs themselves. If a piece cannot be got in at all, we say so at the template rather than on the day. A lift out of service for the day turns a straightforward install into a stair carry, so the slot gets confirmed with whoever manages the building rather than against a calendar. The steel and the corbels travel that same route and go in first, so a bar is three separate carries into one room rather than a single delivery. Stools and back shelving come in after the stone is down.
